The purpose of this initiative is to enhance connectivity between the three countries, as the Highway will start from Kolkata in India, pass through Myanmar, and go all the way to Bangkok in Thailand.
Kolkata Bangkok Highway will not only improve connectivity between these countries but will also improve trade relations among them. The project is aligned with the Look East Policy of India and is a part of BIMSTEC( Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, and once completed, it will be one of the longest highways in India.
The project was initiated in 2002 by former Prime Minister Mr Atal Biharee Bajpayee to improve trade relations, economic ties, and connectivity between the three countries. Even though there were delays and several challenges, the project is expected to be completed by the year 2027.
Route Of The Kolkata Bangkok Highway
The Kolkata Bangkok Highway will be around 2800 km in length and will traverse through various cities in all these three countries:
India: Siliguri, Srirampur, Guwahati, Kohima, Moreh, Kolkata
Myanmar: Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, Tamu
Thailand: Bangkok, Sukhothai, Mae Sot
