The new Radha Rani Ropeway in Barsana, Uttar Pradesh, is set to revolutionise access to the Radha Rani Temple as it opened on August 25, 2024. This modern transport option will replace the challenging climb with a scenic, efficient ride, enhancing the pilgrimage experience for devotees and tourists alike. The Radha Rani Ropeway will be inaugurated by CM Yogi Adityanath. Here are ten key facts about the Radha Rani Ropeway:
- About Barsana: Barsana, known as the village of Radha, is a major pilgrimage destination. The new ropeway will improve access, especially during major festivals like Latha Maar Holi and Radha Ashtami, benefiting both local devotees and international visitors.
- Inauguration Date: The ropeway officially opened on August 25, 2024, coinciding with the Janmashtami festival. This will make the temple, located 600 feet above the ground, more accessible.
- Construction Cost: The project, managed by the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, cost INR 15.89 crore. This investment underscores the commitment to improving pilgrimage accessibility.
- Project Execution: MVDA oversaw the construction, with funding and execution handled in partnership with private entities, highlighting a successful public-private collaboration.
- Gondolas: The ropeway features two towers and twelve gondolas sourced from Indonesia, Germany, and China. These gondolas are designed to provide visitors with a comfortable ride.
- Travel Time: Spanning 300 meters, the ropeway will cover the distance between the lower and upper stations in about three minutes. This is a significant improvement over the previous climb of over 200 stairs.
- Capacity: Each gondola accommodates up to six passengers, with three gondolas operating simultaneously. This setup ensures smooth and efficient transportation for many visitors.
- Additional Stairs: Alongside the ropeway, a new set of stairs with 275 steps is being built for those who prefer to climb. This offers an alternative route to the temple.
- Environmental Considerations: The project faced delays due to environmental concerns. The National Green Tribunal required compensation for tree removal, leading to the planting of ten times the number of trees removed, with photographic proof of compliance.
- History: The idea for the ropeway was proposed in 2016 during the Samajwadi Party regime. However, it faced regulatory and environmental hurdles, which delayed approvals and construction.
The Radha Rani Ropeway promises to enhance the pilgrimage experience, making it easier for visitors to reach the sacred Radha Rani Temple and enjoy the stunning views along the way.
