Locally known as the 'Kari Saipu', Alfred George Baker’s vision behind the transformation of the Kumarakom. In 1847, the King of Travancore granted him 500 acres of wetlands with the aim of transforming these lands into fertile grounds suitable for cultivation. The Baker’s with the help of local workers provided the successful cultivation of paddy and coconut, laying the foundation for Kumarakom's agricultural prosperity.

It’s not only Alfred who took the responsibility but also his family also participated in this. Their contribution is not only limited to agriculture but beyond that including educational development by his wife, Fanny, building churches by his son George Alexander Baker, social and ecological development and many more.

Mythological Significance of Kumarakom Backwaters

As per legends, this land of Kerala, Kumarakom Backwaters was formed by Lord Pashuram who was also the 6th avatar of Lor Vishnu. It is said that Lord Parashurama threw his axe into the sea and commanded Samundra Dev to retreat to the land, which is now known as Kumarakom Backwaters.
