London Plane Crash at Southend Airport Sparks Emergency Response and Cancellations

A London plane crash at Southend Airport on Sunday afternoon caused a major emergency response and flight cancellations. The Southend Airport plane crash happened around 4 pm (BST), when a small 12-metre general aviation aircraft caught fire.

Essex Police confirmed they were called to the scene in Southend-on-Sea and said the emergency operation would continue for several hours. People have been asked to stay away from the area while emergency teams work.

The East of England Ambulance Service sent four teams, including a rapid response vehicle, a hazardous area response team, and a senior paramedic. Firefighters from Southend, Rayleigh Weir, Basildon, Billericay, and Chelmsford also responded to the crash.

A spokesperson for the airport confirmed the Southend Airport plane crash involved a small general aviation aircraft. “We are working with emergency services and will share updates as soon as we can,” they said.

This London plane crash led to at least four flight cancellations, according to the airport’s website. Officials have not yet shared how many people were on board or their condition.

Photos shared online showed flames and thick smoke rising above the airport, which is located about 35 miles (56 km) east of London.

David Burton-Sampson, Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, posted on X (formerly Twitter): “My thoughts are with everyone involved.” Matt Dent from Southend City Council also wrote: “At present, all I know is that a small plane has crashed at the airport. My thoughts are with all those involved and with the emergency services currently responding.”
