New Year in Vietnam happens twice. On Thursday, 31 December 2026, Ho Chi Minh City packs Nguyen Hue Walking Street for its countdown, Hanoi gathers around Hoan Kiem Lake and Da Nang looks to the Han River. Then, on Saturday, 6 February 2027, comes Tet, the Lunar New Year, when families head home and much of the country slows down for a week.

The 31 December night is the easier trip from India. Flights are short, the south is dry, and every main countdown is free. What catches visitors out is the detail: where to stand, what a rooftop table costs and how to get back to the hotel after midnight.

The 31 December countdown is a modern, urban celebration that young Vietnamese in the big cities have made their own over the past two decades. The new year that matters to families is Tet Nguyen Dan, the Lunar New Year, which falls on 6 February 2027 and opens the Year of the Goat. Tet changes how the country works. Trains and buses out of Hanoi and Saigon sell out in the days before it, airfares climb sharply, and many family-run restaurants and shops close for the first three days. Every main countdown in Vietnam is free, so what decides your night is where you stand and how early you get there. Cities confirm their fireworks programmes only in mid-December, which is why we check the local announcement every year before briefing our groups, and you should do the same.

Ho Chi Minh City: Nguyen Hue and the riverfront

The Nguyen Hue countdown in Saigon is the largest in the country, with the stage in front of the People's Committee building and the boulevard full by 10:30 pm. In recent years the Vietnam new year fireworks here have gone up over the river near the Thu Thiem tunnel. We take our groups to Bach Dang Wharf at the river end of Nguyen Hue, where the view of the sky is clearer and the crowd thins faster after midnight.

• Best free spot: Bach Dang Wharf, at the river end of Nguyen Hue, gives an open view of the sky over the Thu Thiem side without the crush near the stage.
• When to arrive: Reach the boulevard by 9 pm, because after 10:30 pm the side streets off Le Loi and Dong Khoi become the only way in.
• Getting back: Walk at least ten minutes away from the river before booking a Grab, since cars cannot enter District 1's closed streets until about 1:30 am.

Hanoi: a quieter night around Hoan Kiem Lake

Hanoi's New Year's Eve centres onHoan Kiem Lake, with music and the countdown staged near Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square at the edge of the Old Quarter. Fireworks in Hanoi are more dependable at Tet than on 31 December, so go for the atmosphere and treat any display as a bonus. Midnight can drop to 12-14°C, and travellers who pack only for the south always regret it.

• Best free spot: The north-east shore near the red Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple keeps you close to the stage with a little more room than the square itself.
• What to wear: A warm jacket and closed shoes are worth packing, as the lakeside is open to the wind and the night is often damp.
• After midnight: The beer stalls on Ta Hien and the Old Quarter food carts stay busy into the small hours, so a late supper after the countdown is easy to find.

Da Nang: the river, the bridge and a beach next morning

Da Nang countdown runs along the Han River, and the promenade on Bach Dang Street near the Dragon Bridgeis the most comfortable crowd of the three. The city has fired Da Nang NYE fireworks over the river in several recent years, and the bridge's own fire-and-water show at 9 pm on 2 and 3 January 2027 gives you a second night out. For a calmer evening, Hoi An's lantern-lit old town is 40 minutes away by road.

• Best free spot: The Bach Dang Street promenade between the Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge gives a clear line of sight across the water.
• The second show: Watch the Dragon Bridge fire-and-water display from Tran Hung Dao Street at the bridge's eastern end, where the dragon's head faces.
• Where to stay: A hotel on the river or near My Khe Beach keeps the trip back short, and Da Nang's roads clear far faster after midnight than Saigon's or Hanoi's.

A New Year party in Vietnam falls into three tiers, and the right one depends on whether you want the view, the meal or the noise. The prices below are approximate per-person figures based on what venues charged last New Year's Eve, converted at roughly 300 dong to the rupee. Venues publish their 2026 packages between late November and early December, so confirm on each venue's own listing before you book.

Rooftop bars with a countdown view

A rooftop gives you the fireworks without the crush, and in our experience the river-facing ones in Saigon are worth the premium.

• EON Heli Bar, Saigon (approx. ₹8,000-20,000): On the 52nd floor of the Bitexco Financial Tower in District 1, it looks straight down the Saigon River towards Thu Thiem, which makes it the best seat in the city for the fireworks.
• M Bar, Hotel Majestic Saigon (approx. ₹6,000-12,000): This colonial-era rooftop at the foot of Dong Khoi faces the river directly and suits couples who want a quieter, seated countdown.
• Chill Skybar, AB Tower, Saigon (approx. ₹5,000-15,000): It is the loudest of the three, with a DJ and a strict dress code, so men should leave shorts and sandals at the hotel.
• Top of Hanoi, Lotte Center (approx. ₹5,000-12,000): The 65th-floor bar has the widest view in Hanoi, but it sits about 6 km from Hoan Kiem Lake, so you trade the lakeside atmosphere for the skyline.
• Sky36, Novotel Danang Premier Han River (approx. ₹4,000-10,000): The 36th-floor terrace overlooks the Han River and the Dragon Bridge, and it is the best-value rooftop of the three cities.

Hotel gala dinners

Gala dinners suit couples and families who want a seated evening with a short walk to the countdown.

• Caravelle Saigon (approx. ₹10,000-20,000): It sits on Lam Son Square, two minutes from Nguyen Hue, and its Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar runs a separate countdown for those who skip the dinner.
• Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (approx. ₹20,000-35,000): Hanoi's grandest heritage hotel is a five-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, and its New Year gala is the most formal evening in the city.
• Furama Resort Danang (approx. ₹10,000-20,000): This beachfront resort on My Khe pairs a buffet with a sea view, which suits families who want an early, calm night by the water.

Street parties that cost nothing

Entry to all three is free, and you pay only for what you drink.

• Bui Vien Walking Street, Saigon (beer approx. ₹85-200): District 1's backpacker strip fills with music and plastic stools, and it is the one place where we tell our groups to keep phones in a front zip.
• Ta Hien Beer Street, Hanoi (beer approx. ₹70-100): The Old Quarter's beer corner is smaller and friendlier, and it fills up straight after the lakeside countdown ends.
• An Thuong, Da Nang (cocktails approx. ₹250-500): This cluster of bars a block from My Khe Beach draws a younger crowd and stays relaxed well past midnight.

Day 1, Wednesday 30 December: arrive and settle in. Check into a hotel in District 1 or District 3 so that everything on the 31st is walkable. Spend the afternoon at Ben Thanh Market, then walk to the Saigon Central Post Office and the book street on Nguyen Van Binh. Keep dinner simple with com tam or banh xeo, and sleep early, because most flights from India land late at night or at dawn.

Day 2, Thursday 31 December: the countdown. Take a half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning and aim to be back by 1 pm, as traffic thickens through the afternoon. Rest in the hotel, eat an early dinner on a side street near Nguyen Hue around 7:30 pm, and be in position on the boulevard or at Bach Dang Wharf by 9 pm. After midnight, walk back rather than wait for a car.

Day 3, Friday 1 January: the slow day. New Year's Day is a public holiday, so banks and government offices close, but markets, cafés, malls and most museums stay open. Start late with a ca phe sua da, visit the War Remnants Museum in the afternoon, and finish with the seafood stalls on Vinh Khanh Street in District 4.

Day 4, Saturday 2 January: leave the city. Take a day trip to the Mekong Delta at My Tho and Ben Tre, or fly to Da Nang in time for the Dragon Bridge fire show at 9 pm. Either option works as an exit day before your flight home.

The same shape works in Hanoi with three swaps: an Old Quarter food walk on day one, the Temple of Literature on 1 January, and a Ha Long Bay cruise on day four. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum normally closes on Fridays, so it will not open on 1 January 2027.

New Year week in Vietnam costs noticeably more than the rest of December, but it remains one of the more affordable New Year's Eve trips from India. The figures below are approximate as of October 2026, per person unless marked, and should be checked again on the day you book.

Mistakes that cost more than money

• Staying outside the walking zone: A cheaper hotel across town becomes expensive at 12:30 am, when streets are closed and the walk takes over an hour.
• Counting on Grab after midnight: Ride-hailing fares surge to two or three times the usual rate, and cars cannot reach the closed streets until about 1:30 am.
• Arriving at 11 pm: By then the good positions on Nguyen Hue and the riverfront are gone, and late arrivals end up watching the backs of heads.
• Leaving the long weekend unbooked: Because 1 January 2027 is a Friday, Ha Long cruises and Da Nang beach hotels sell out to domestic travellers earlier than in other years.

Christmas or New Year: which is better in Vietnam?

New Year is the bigger public event, with free countdowns and fireworks in every major city. Christmas is quieter and centres on church districts, decorated malls and hotel dinners, which suits travellers who prefer smaller crowds.
