Holy men known as Naga Sadhus led the first bath during the early morning hours at the sacred river meeting point. They arrived riding horses, playing drums, and carrying traditional weapons. Chanting “Har Har Mahadev”, their loud chants filled the air as they took their sacred dip, which believers say washes away sins. According to government figures, by the end of the day, 3.5 crore people had taken a sacred dip in the waters.
Different groups of holy men took turns for Amrit Snan Maha Kumbh in order. The Bairagi groups went first, followed by monks from the Udasin and Nirmal groups. For the 1st time, more than 500 transgender sadhus joined the ceremony. Their group was led by Tina Ma, a transgender spiritual leader.
“We are grateful to Ma Ganga and pray for the country’s progress,” Tina Ma said.
Devotees from around the world came to take part in the holy bath at Prayagraj Kumbh Mela 2025. Officials have set up strict safety measures, including night-vision cameras and drones to watch over the crowds. Security chief Sanjay Prasad said they’re using modern technology to keep everyone safe.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath celebrated the event on social media, calling it a display of India’s ancient traditions. He congratulated all who took the sacred dip during this special festival of Makar Sankranti.
