But it has been announced: Shutdown of roads in Srinagar due to snowfall for two days in a row, the Mughal road and Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road were shut because of more rain in Kashmir. This rain made it cooler in the area.
Traffic police said the Mughal road, important for connecting south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch districts, stayed closed because of rain at Peer ki Gali. Likewise, the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road, which goes to Ladakh from Sonamarg, was also closed due to bad weather and unsafe road conditions, according to a traffic control room official.
According to reports, many areas in the region, including the main city of Srinagar have announced a Shutdown of roads in Srinagar due to snowfall and light to medium rain. The Meteorological Centre (MeT) in Srinagar mentioned, “More rain has started in most areas of Kashmir and some parts of Jammu. Right now, there’s medium rain in many places in South Kashmir.”
In Addition, the management authority of the Jammu and Kashmir disaster warned about avalanches that were above to happen in four districts in the Kashmir valley. It was said there was a moderate risk of avalanches above 3000 meters in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal districts over the next day. People living there were told to be very careful and wanted them to stay away from areas where avalanches might happen.
Before this, there was light to medium rain and snow across the union territory during Saturday night and Sunday. MeT director Mukhtar Ahmad said the rainy weather would last till Monday, with mostly cloudy skies and light to medium rain or snow, especially in higher areas. Some places might also have heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds. Tuesday is likely to be similar with light to medium rain expected.
The weather MeT department said, “On April 29th and 30th, it will be mostly cloudy with light rain and some scattered thunderstorms. From May 1st to 5th, it’s expected to be dry and without rain.”
The department recommended that farmers refrain from carrying out any activities on their farms until April 30th. This advice was likely given due to the expected rainy and possibly stormy weather conditions, which could make working outdoors unsafe or ineffective. Taking a break from farm operations during this period would help ensure the safety of the farmers and potentially protect their crops from damage.
The advisory mentioned that there might be some traffic delays in high areas like Zojila, Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, and Razdan Pass. It also warned about possible waterlogging in lower areas. There’s a chance of landslides, falling rocks, and a temporary increase in water levels in the Jhelum River, its smaller rivers, and nearby streams.
In the areas around Srinagar, the temperature used to stay at 10.5°C, which is actually a typical temperature for this time of year but slightly warmer than usual. Pahalgam had a low temperature of 6.3°C, a bit higher than compared to the previous night and warmer than usual by 1.9°C.
Kupwara’s temperature dropped to 8.1°C from 8.5°C, just a bit below the normal temperature for the town. Gulmarg was colder at 2.4°C, lower than the previous night and below the usual temperature for the skiing resort by 1.8°C.
The reports also announced and mentioned the Shutdown of roads in Srinagar due to snowfall where vehicles won’t be allowed on the road until the weather gets better and the authorities finish clearing it.
