  • The history of Hyde Park Sydney reveals a fascinating story. In 1792, Governor Phillip reserved the Hyde Park area in Sydney for public use. Initially, the park was used as a space for grazing livestock and gathering firewood.
  • In 1810, Governor Macquarie officially designated the area as a park and named it after its England counterpart. They initially thought of designing it as a grand quadrangle in a neo-classical town style. However, the park quickly transformed into a horse racing course.
  • By the early 1820s, Hyde Park transformed into a sporting hub, hosting cricket, rugby, and football matches. Today, it continues to serve as a venue for sporting events, but in a more relaxed and casual manner.
