This statue is 19 feet tall and has been named the ‘Statue of Equality’. It is said to be an integral part of the AIC or the Ambedkar International Council in Accokeek, Maryland. The council is currently under construction on 13 acres of land and is an essential addition to the Ambedkar Memorial Center.
B.R. Ambedkar was born in 1891 and was known as Baba Saheb or Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar. He was the principal architect of the constitution of India and was the chairman of the drafting committee of the constituent assembly.
After the independence of the country, he also served as the Minister of Law and Justice while also playing an important role in the society by fighting for the rights of the Dalits and the untouchables.
He passed away in 1956, a few months after adopting Buddhism. The date 14th October has been chosen for unveiling the statue because it is the same date Ambedkar adopted Buddhism.
Ram Sutar, a renowned artist who also contributed to making the statue of unity, has crafted the statue of Equality as well.
