Bhimgarh Fort History

The Bhimgarh Fort history dates back several centuries. It was originally made of clay and was used as a haven for the local rulers in times of danger. According to historians, the fort was built by Raja Bhimdev of the Reasi dynasty, who used it as a safe haven for his family and a defense outpost. In its early days, the walls of the fort were fragile and vulnerable to natural elements and attacks.

Later, in the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh, who was the founder of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the fort had stone walls and thus the present shape. Maharaja Gulab Singh did much to turn this clay fort into a difficult one made of stones. He added an imposing entrance gate carved out of Baluka stones that stands there at present.
