The Spain digital nomad visa is designed for foreigners who want to live in Spain while working remotely for a company or as self-employed, provided the business is based outside of Spain. You must use only online tools (computers, internet, etc.) to do your work.

If you're self-employed, you're allowed to work for a Spanish company too, but only if this work makes up no more than 20% of your total income.

To qualify, you need either:

  • A university or business school degree from a recognised institution, or
  • At least 3 years of work experience in your current field.

Who Can Apply?

You can apply for the digital nomad visa Spain if you're:

  • An employee of a foreign company, or
  • A self-employed freelancer with international clients.

Family members who can apply with you:

  • Your spouse or unmarried partner
  • Dependent children
  • Dependent parents or grandparents in your care

Spain Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

Here are the main Spain digital nomad visa requirements:

General Documents for All Applicants:

  • Visa application form (filled and signed)
  • Passport-size photo with a white background
  • Valid passport (at least 1 year validity and 2 blank pages)
  • Copies of your passport’s biometric and visa pages
  • Police clearance certificate (apostilled and translated into Spanish)
  • Proof of address (utility bills, lease agreement, etc.)
  • If using a representative: their ID and a legal document proving they represent you
  • Health insurance that covers you fully in Spain
  • Visa fee payment (amount depends on your nationality)

Specific Documents for Remote Workers:

  • NIE Number (you must apply for this first)
  • Proof of working remotely for 3+ months:
  • If employed: contract details, consent to work remotely in Spain, and salary
  • If self-employed: client contracts and terms to work remotely from Spain
  • Company registration certificate (showing when the company was created and what it does)
  • Proof of registration with Spanish Social Security:
  • Employed: employer must register you
  • Freelancers: must be registered in the RETA system

If your country has a Social Security agreement with Spain, you may use a certificate from your home country instead.

  • Declaration of compliance with Social Security rules in Spain (by you or your employer)
  • Proof of financial means:
  • You must earn at least 200% of the Spanish national minimum wage
  • For each family member: add 75% for the first person, then 25% for each additional one
  • Proof of education or work experience:
  • University or graduate degree, or
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience

If the job is a regulated profession in Spain, your degree must be officially recognised.

Requirements for Family Members

If your family is applying with you, you’ll need:

  • Marriage or birth certificates, or documents proving an unregistered partnership (translated and apostilled)
  • For adult children: proof of financial dependence and single status
  • For dependent parents: proof they rely on you financially

Visa Application Process

  • Where to apply: At a BLS International Visa Application Centre (VAC) with a prior appointment.
  • Who applies: You must apply in person or through a legal representative.
  • Processing time: Usually within 10 working days, but may take longer.
  • Visa result: You'll be notified in writing if the visa is refused, and you can file an appeal.

After Getting The Visa

The Spain digital nomad visa is valid for up to 1 year. You don't need to get a residence card, but you can apply for one if you wish. This visa is proof of legal residency in Spain.

Note: You cannot apply for this visa if your job qualifies for an intra-corporate transfer visa.
