About Esplanade Theatres on the Bay

Named after the nearby Esplanade Park, it consists of two rounded structures: one housing an Esplanade concert hall with about 1,600 seats; and the other a Performing arts center in Singapore with a capacity of about 2,000 for the performing arts.

History of Esplanade Theatres on the Bay

One key recommendation was the construction of a new performing arts center to address the lack of suitable venues. The Singapore Arts Centre, later known as Esplanade Co Ltd, was established in 1992 to oversee the project. 

Construction began in 1996, and the center was completed in 2001. It was officially opened in 2002 by President S. R. Nathan. The center, named Esplanade after its location in Esplanade Park, replaced the former “Satay Club” and has since become a prominent cultural landmark in Singapore.
