Ever wondered what it’s like to stand at the edge of the world? That’s exactly what Laitlum Canyon in Meghalaya feels like. The name literally means 'End of the Hills'—and it totally lives up to it. Let’s be honest, a Meghalaya trip isn’t complete without this stop!

On clear days, you can see the rolling East Khasi Hills stretch endlessly into the distance. On misty days, the entire canyon disappears into clouds, creating a surreal, otherworldly vibe. For those up for a little adventure, a steep stone trail leads down to Rasong village, making it a great spot for light trekking.

Located about 23 km from Shillong, Laitlum Grand Canyon is one of those places that instantly makes you go “wow.” Yes — this is exactly what you came to Meghalaya for! It’s so beautiful that words don’t do it justice. So, let’s dive in and find out how to make the most of your visit.

Where is Laitlum Located?

Laitlum Canyon is located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India. It lies approximately 20 to 25 kilometers south of Shillong, the capital city. Often referred to as “Laitlum Canyons,” this stunning spot is also known locally as “Smit Valley,” as it is close to the village of Smit.

How to Reach Laitlum Canyon

Laitlum Canyon, one of Meghalaya’s most breathtaking spots, is located about 23 km from Shillong city. Getting there is pretty easy and can be done in a few ways depending on your budget and travel style.

By Car or Taxi (Most Convenient)

The easiest way to reach Laitlum is by private taxi or self-drive car.

  • Distance from Shillong: Around 1 hour
  • Taxis can be hired from Police Bazar or any local taxi stand in Shillong.
  • Expect fares to be around ₹1,000–₹2,000 (round trip).
  • The road is scenic but slightly rough in patches, especially during the monsoon, so an SUV is ideal.

By Bike (Budget + Adventure)

If you're up for a little thrill, renting a bike is a great option.

  • Bike rentals are available in Shillong for around ₹500–₹800 per day.
  • The ride is smooth for the most part and gives you full flexibility to explore at your own pace.

By Shared Taxi or Bus (Budget-Friendly)

For budget travellers, hop on a shared sumo or local bus to Smit Village, which is the nearest major point.

  • From Smit, Laitlum Canyon is about 2 km away.
  • You can either walk, hire a local cab, or hitch a ride with locals.
  • Shared taxis cost much less (₹50–₹200), but may take longer due to stops.

Short Walk or Trek

Once you reach the parking area at Laitlum Shillong, it’s a short 2–5 minute walk to the main viewpoint.

Feeling adventurous? There's a longer trek down to Rasong village, but that’s a steep one with nearly 3,000 steps and should only be attempted if you're prepared and fit.

Best Time to Visit Laitlum Canyon

The best time to visit Laitlum Canyon is from October to March. During these months, the skies are clear, the weather is cool (around 10°C–20°C), and the views are absolutely stunning. It’s perfect for photography, short hikes, and soaking in the dramatic landscapes.

March to June is also a good time, with pleasant temperatures and lush greenery, though light showers are common.

Avoid the monsoon season (June to September) as heavy rains, fog, and slippery trails can block the views and make trekking risky.

Visit between late morning and early afternoon for the clearest views, as mornings and evenings often stay foggy.

  • Chill or Picnic

Bring some snacks, sit back, and enjoy the cool breeze with a view that feels straight out of a dream.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
