While we walked over the ruins, we were impressed by the gigantic pillars and the clever design that enables sunlight to reach the central shrine so beautifully. Even though it is partly destroyed, it still illustrates how competent the ancient craftsmen were.
Martand Sun Temple is a highlight among Kashmir's popular lakes and gardens as a historical site. It is an easy day trip if you are residing in Srinagar.

Martand Sun Temple was built in the 8th century by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty. This king was the ruler of Kashmir and wanted to build a temple to worship Surya, the Hindu Sun God. The name "Martand" actually refers to the Sun in Sanskrit.
The History of Martand Sun Temple is quite interesting. It is said that the temple was one of the best temples in Kashmir for Surya in India at that time. Sadly, the temple was ultimately destroyed during the rule of Sikandar Shah Miri in the 15th century. Even though it is now in ruins, one could still feel its greatness from its structure and surroundings.
