World’s First Tilted Dome Planetarium Mysuru To Revolutionise Astronomical Viewing

Karnataka is set to make astronomical history with the World’s First Tilted Dome Planetarium Mysuru. Located at the Chamundi Hills campus, this innovative project is a collaborative effort between the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and the University of Mysore. 

With an investment of 91 crore rupees, the tilted dome LED planetarium Karnataka is expected to revolutionise the way visitors experience space and celestial displays. Scheduled to open in September 2025, this cutting-edge facility promises to offer a unique and immersive educational experience for science enthusiasts and the general public alike.

Tilted LED Planetarium Mysuru To Redefine Astronomical Viewing

Exceptional Viewing Experience: 

Mysuru’s new astronomical project will feature a groundbreaking 15-metre diameter dome tilted at a unique 15-degree angle. The innovative LED technology promises a more natural and immersive stargazing experience.

IIA(Indian Institute of Astrophysics) Director Annapurni Subramanian highlighted that the LED system will deliver unprecedented visual quality. With a broader colour spectrum and significantly brighter imagery. Visitors can expect extraordinary realistic representations of celestial landscapes, including stars, planets, and cosmic environments.

Cutting-Edge Technology:

  • The planetarium will use SkyExplorer, a sophisticated astronomical software developed by French company RSA Cosmos. 
  • This advanced system will control the 8K LED lights, promising viewers an incredibly detailed cosmic journey. RSA Cosmos, collaborating with its Indian subsidiary Orbit Animate Pvt. Ltd., to install the state-of-the-art LED dome system.

Cosmic Education: 

The tilted LED planetarium Mysuru is a key component of the broader Cosmology Education and Research Training Centre (COSMOS). The initiative aims to become a comprehensive astronomical education hub, designing specialised programs for students and educators while simultaneously improving public understanding of astronomy and cosmology. 

Through its strategic educational and outreach efforts, COSMOS is set to spark inspiration and curiosity among future astronomers, potentially nurturing the next generation of space explorers and researchers.

Government Funding:

The tilted dome LED planetarium Karnataka project has secured financial support from multiple government bodies. Key funding sources include the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLADS) scheme, championed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Additional financial backing comes from prestigious scientific institutions such as the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Atomic Energy, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
