Travel Tips for Azerbaijan

1. Get an e-visa online - Most visitors need one, and it's easy to apply through the official website. It usually takes 3 days to process.

2. Learn a few basic Azerbaijani phrases - "Salam" (hello), "Sağ olun" (thank you), and "Neçəyədir?" (how much?) can go a long way since English isn't widely spoken.

3. Carry cash - While cards work in Baku's modern areas, many places only accept Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). ATMs are common in cities but rare in rural areas.

4. The official currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN).

(1 AZN ≈ ₹49-₹52 INR — but always check live rates before travel.)

5. Try the local tea culture - Tea is served everywhere in small pear-shaped glasses with jam or sweets on the side. It's considered rude to refuse a tea offer.

6. Visit Baku's contrasts - Spend time in both the ancient walled Old City (Icherisheher) and the ultra-modern waterfront boulevard to see Azerbaijan's fascinating blend of old and new.

7. Use the Baku metro - It's clean, efficient, cheap, and beautifully decorated with art. Buy a card that you can refill rather than single tickets.

8. Respect local customs - Dress modestly outside tourist areas (especially for women), remove shoes when entering homes, and avoid public displays of affection.

9. Eat at local restaurants - Try plov (rice pilaf), dolma (stuffed vegetables), and qutab (thin pancakes with fillings). Restaurants called "locals" offer authentic food at good prices.

10. Travel beyond Baku - Make time for Sheki (mountain town with beautiful palaces), Gobustan (ancient rock carvings and mud volcanoes), and Gabala (nature and outdoor activities).

11. Negotiate taxi fares upfront - Always agree on a price before getting in if there's no meter, or better yet, use taxi apps like Bolt which have set prices.

12. Carry some USD or EUR for easy exchange at local currency counters – they’re widely accepted and usually get you better rates.

13. Exchange money at local banks or authorized currency exchange kiosks in Baku for the best rates. Avoid airport exchanges — they tend to offer lower value.

14. A basic prepaid SIM with 5-10 GB data will cost around ₹400-₹600. Totally worth it for those Instagram stories, Google Maps, and 2 AM food searches.

15. Travel adapter: Azerbaijan uses Type C and F plugs (Euro-style, 220V)

Azerbaijan Travel Guidelines

  1. All travelers (except visa-exempt countries) need an e-Visa to enter Azerbaijan. Apply via evisa.gov.az; it costs INR 2125 (standard) or 4250 INR (urgent) and is valid for 30 days.
  2. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival. Keep it handy at all times — for hotels, checkpoints, and even SIM card purchases.
  3. Avoid traveling to Nagorno-Karabakh or areas near the Armenia border. These are restricted zones, and prior visits to the region may cause entry issues.
  4. Get a local SIM card (Azercell, Bakcell, or Nar) upon arrival. You’ll need your passport to register. Data is cheap, and network coverage is good in cities.
  5. Use Bolt or Yandex Go for getting around in Baku and other cities — way safer and cheaper than haggling with street taxis.
  6. Avoid talking politics — especially around topics like Armenia or Nagorno-Karabakh. Locals may take offense.
  7. Save local emergency numbers: Police – 102, Ambulance – 103, Tourist Info – 118. Also, keep your embassy’s contact details saved.
  8. Book hotels, tours, and activities through verified travel platforms or reputed agencies only. Always double-check reviews before confirming.

We encountered WanderOn on Instagram. Right from contacting them for our customised Baku, Azerbaijhan trip to its completion, all the elements of this trip was amazing. My initial interaction with Mustakim was good. He made me comfortable & immediately understood what I was looking for in the trip. He asked relevant questions to understand my travel style. He tastefully accommodated all my requests & gave me a suitable quote which i booked almost immediately. Once finalised, The team proactively reached out for payments & shared all updates clearly. We had Aakash, our POC, guide us beautifully - shortly after booking the trip, on what to expect & shared a short sneak peak into all the upcoming fun right before the trip as well. Once we landed, our driver Arzu was so easy & amazing to drive around with. He made sure we were comfortable & he was very professional & punctual. He took us to the best spots for shopping & took great pictures of us too! The ground team was also mindful to allow us our privacy and at the same time keep in touch with us to ensure we were enjoying & had no concerns. This tiny “checking on us” effort really felt warm🌸 The whole team of WanderOn, take a bow! They are all so warm to interact with & they treat you with comfort while giving you your space & flexibility. We are carrying with us such wonderful memories of Azerbaijhan 🇦🇿 The whole trip was peaceful & hassle free. A true sense of a comfortable trip so much so that we miss the routine we had😂 Kudos to WanderOn❤️ Well I’ll surely be reaching to you for my future travel as well🌻

We went on a customised trip to Baku with WanderOn last month which was a family trip for my nephew‘a first birthday . The trip was amazing and very well planned. We enjoyed thoroughly throughout our trip. The accommodations, transport and the inclusions were upto the expectations. I loved the fact that our team was super responsive throughout our trip no matter what time of the day it was to handle our queries or problems!! I would also like to especially mention and thank our POC Mr Aakash, Mr Bhupender who were really friendly and helpful and guided us during our entire trip and last but not the least our driver Mr Ziya who was super friendly and so kind and patient despite us not being not able to maintain our schedule timings at times!! Overall if anyone is planning for a vacation with a hassle free itinerary and a relaxed mind with a decent budget I strongly recommend Wander On as this was my second trip with them. We also booked our honeymoon package through them in Maldives which was an exceptionally awesome trip as well! So thanks a lot Team WanderOn to each and every one of you who have put in all the hard work to make our vacation worth cherishing!! Kudos to your great work!! Keep it up👍👍😊❤️❤️

Thank you Bhupendra, Aakash and team Wander on for the assist in our international trip to Baku. It was amazing. The travel and booking were very smooth and it was really smooth coordination from your end when we were at Baku. Quick assists were given by your team although assist wasn’t up to the mark before the travel but glad everything went smoothly. Thank you very much for this memorable international trip.
