Getting Around Hong Kong

Getting around Hong Kong is fast, easy, and convenient. The city has a modern transport system with options for every traveler.

From Hong Kong International Airport

  • Airport Express: This is a high-speed train, not a bus. It takes about 24 minutes to reach Hong Kong Island and is the fastest way to the city. Some airlines offer free in-town check-in at Kowloon and Hong Kong stations.
  • Taxis: Red taxis go to Hong Kong Island & Kowloon, green taxis to the New Territories, and blue taxis to Lantau Island. Fares are metered, air-conditioned, and usually accept cash or an Octopus card. Some accept digital payments, but always check first.
  • Buses & Shuttles: Airbus “A” routes and hotel shuttles connect the airport to key locations.
  • Private Coaches & Limousines: Available for groups or travelers wanting premium rides; can be booked in advance.

Public Transport in the City

  • MTR (Mass Transit Railway): Covers all major districts, including Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and New Territories.

It’s fast and reliable, but stations are huge. Changing lines at hubs like Central or Admiralty may take 5–10 minutes to walk underground. Avoid rush hours (8-9:30 AM, 5:30-6 PM) if carrying heavy luggage.

  • Buses & Minibuses:
  • Double-decker buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and give great city views. Exact cash is needed if not using an Octopus card.
  • Green minibuses run fixed routes and are easier for tourists.
  • Red minibuses don’t always have fixed stops, and you may need to shout your destination in Cantonese; only try if you’re confident.
  • Trams: Historic double-decker trams run on Hong Kong Island. The trams offer a flat fare, provide fun, and are an easy option for sightseeing.
  • Taxis: There are metered taxis that run in Hong Kong. Ask for a printed receipt and check the taxi color based on the destination. Fleet taxis offer premium service and can be pre-booked.

Ferries & Water Transport

  • Star Ferry: Crosses between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It is reasonably priced and provides breathtaking views of the harbor.
  • Ferries to Outlying Islands: Go to Lantau, Cheung Chau, Lamma, Discovery Bay, and more. Fast and standard ferries are available.
  • Water Taxi: A scenic way to see Victoria Harbour and the skyline.

Octopus Card - Travel Buddy

  • What it does: Lets you pay cash-free for MTR, buses, trams, ferries, and even shops or restaurants.
  • Types:
  • Tourist Octopus (physical card): From HK$39 (₹410-430), no deposit needed.
  • Mobile Octopus: Add to your phone via the Octopus app and top up anytime. Refundable deposit of HK$50 (₹525-550).

Hong Kong Travel Guidelines

  1. If you are planning trips to Hong Kong packages, and your stay is 14 days or less, you must complete a Pre-Arrival Registration (PAR) online before your journey.
  2. PAR is free and done online. You usually receive approval quickly, which makes planning your Hong Kong travel package easier and smoother.
  3. After approval, print the PAR confirmation on A4 paper and carry it with you to the airport.
  4. Please ensure that your name and passport details match exactly when filling out the form. Even a small spelling mistake can create issues.
  5. Once approved, PAR is generally valid for six months and allows short visits of up to 14 days each time.
  6. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of travel, especially if you have already booked one of the Hong Kong tour packages.
  7. Always carry your return flight ticket to show that you plan to come back to India.
  8. Keep your hotel booking confirmation or full address of your stay ready, as immigration officers may ask for it.
  9. Carry proof that you have enough money for your trip, such as cash, an international card, or a recent bank statement.
  10. The immigration officer at the airport will decide your final entry even if you have PAR approval, so be sure to carefully follow all rules.
  11. If you plan to stay for more than 14 days, you must apply for a regular visa before travelling.
  12. At present, there are no COVID test or quarantine requirements, but it is always smart to check the latest updates before your flight.
  13. Follow all airline instructions and complete any required travel or health forms before boarding.
  14. Keep extra photocopies of your passport, PAR slip, flight tickets, and hotel bookings for safety.
  15. Be calm, polite, and honest while answering questions at immigration.
  16. Follow local laws strictly, as breaking rules in Hong Kong can lead to heavy fines or legal trouble.
  17. For the latest official information, always check the website of the Hong Kong Immigration Department before travelling.

Currency, Payments, & Transport

  1. Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). International debit/credit cards work in most places, but keep some cash for small shops.
  2. Buy an Octopus card for easy travel on buses, metros, and ferries. It saves time and is very convenient.
  3. Public transport is safe, clean, and well-connected. Follow queue rules while boarding.

What to Wear

  1. Pack clothes based on the season. The summer (June– September) is hot and humid. Wear light cotton clothes, comfortable footwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  2. Winter (December-February) is cooler. Carry a light sweater or jacket.
  3. Spring and autumn are mild. Light layers work best.
  4. If visiting Hong Kong Disneyland, wear very comfortable walking shoes.
  5. Carry a small umbrella or rain jacket, as sudden rain is common.
  6. Dress modestly when visiting temples or religious places.

Cultural Do's and Don'ts in Hong Kong

  1. Queuing: Always wait for your turn; cutting in line, even accidentally, is taken seriously across the city.
  2. Receiving & Giving: Use both hands when offering or accepting anything; it is a simple but well-regarded gesture.
  3. Tea Etiquette: Pour for others first, and tap two fingers on the table as a quiet thank you when someone pours for you.
  4. Chopsticks: Never leave chopsticks standing upright in a rice bowl, rest them flat on the holder instead.
  5. Tipping: A 10% service charge is usually included - leaving small change on top is appreciated but not required.
  6. Smoking: Strictly prohibited indoors and in most public spaces - always find a designated smoking zone.
  7. Temple Visits: Dress modestly, speak softly, and always ask before taking photographs inside.
  8. Escalators: Stand on the right, walk on the left, a simple rule followed without exception across Hong Kong.
  9. Bargaining: Welcome at street markets like Temple Street and Ladies Market; not appropriate in malls or fixed-price shops.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
