Getting there does take some effort. The descent involves a bit of a trek and a bamboo staircase that demands a steady step. But once you reach the base and see Wei Sawdong in all its glory, you’ll know it was worth it. Hidden away in the lush greenery near Cherrapunji, Wei Sawdong Falls feels like one of those places you stumble upon in a storybook. With layered cascades, forest trails, and a little bit of adventure thrown in, getting there is half the fun.

  • Reach Shillong by Air or Rail

Start by flying into Shillong’s Umroi Airport (around 60 km from Cherrapunji) or Guwahati Airport (about 160 km away). From either airport, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab for a scenic 2–3 hour drive to Cherrapunji via NH6.

  • From Cherrapunji to the Waterfall

Wei Sawdong Falls location is around 6–7 km from Cherrapunji, typically accessed via a small detour near Dainthlen Falls. Follow local signboards or ask around for directions to the trailhead. There’s a small parking area where the trek begins.

  • Wei Sawdong Falls Trek Details & Tips

Wei Sawdong Falls Trek takes 20–30 minutes one way through forest trails, bamboo ladders, and uneven paths. While the trail isn’t too long, it’s moderately steep, so sturdy trekking shoes are highly recommended.

Expect a total round-trip time of 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and photo stops. Mobile signal is weak here, so carry essentials like water, snacks, and a light jacket. The view at the end? Absolutely worth it.

Things To Do At Wei Sawdong Waterfall

blog-images

Wei Sawdong Waterfall in Meghalaya is like nature’s hidden staircase—three stunning tiers cascading into crystal-clear bluish-green pools. Less commercialized than other tourist spots in Meghalaya, this place is perfect for those craving raw beauty and a little adventure. Here are some of the things to do at Wei Sawdong Waterfall:

1. Trek to the Waterfall

This is where your adventure begins. The trail takes you down a forested path with bamboo ladders, rocky steps, and a bit of a challenge, especially if it’s rained recently. But that’s what makes the journey memorable.

  • Bamboo Ladders & Railings: The locals have crafted these to help you navigate steep sections.
  • Trek Duration: About 20–30 minutes one way.
  • Pro Tip: You can rent a bamboo walking stick at the entrance for better balance.

2. Capture the Viewpoints

Before you reach the base, stop at the viewpoints, these give you the best panoramic shots of all three tiers from above. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause, say “wow,” and reach for your camera.

3. Explore the Surrounding Forest

The waterfall is nestled deep within the Khasi Hills. As you walk, take in the lush surroundings, spot exotic plants (like pitcher plants during the right season), and enjoy the sounds of birds chirping all around you.

4. Soak in the Serenity

Once you reach the base, just sit and listen. The roar of the water, the mist in the air, and the forest all around, it's the kind of peaceful silence that city life can never give you.

Tips for Visiting Wei Sawdong Falls

blog-images
  • No Swimming: The pools may look tempting, but swimming is risky due to strong currents and no lifeguards.
  • No Changing Rooms: Plan accordingly if you expect to get a little wet from the mist.
  • Carry Snacks & Water: You won’t find shops nearby. Keep hydrated and pack light snacks—but take all your trash back with you.
  • Weather Check: Avoid the trail after heavy rain—it gets slippery and dangerous.
  • Consider a Local Guide: For a safer trek and extra local insights, a guide is a good idea.
  • Wear the Right Shoes: The trail to Wei Sawdong is steep and muddy in parts. A good pair of trekking shoes with grip is a must—flip-flops or heels are a no-go!
  • Start Early: Mornings are the best time to visit. The light is soft for photos, the trail is less crowded, and you’ll have more time to relax at the base.

This was my first time traveling to the North-East (Meghalaya + Kaziranga). The accommodations were excellent, with delicious food. It was particularly safe for female solo travelers .The fellow travelers were also fantastic and full of fun. Special thanks to our trip captain Anubhav. His attention to everyone's comfort and ensuring a good time was truly commendable. His wonderful playlist added an extra touch of enjoyment to the journey. To the WanderOn team, I have a couple of suggestions: 1. Consider adding some off-beat places to the itinerary. 2. Improve the Tempo Traveler as it was a long journey and there was not enough leg space. From trekking through lush greenery to encountering majestic wildlife, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement. It was a journey I'll cherish forever. And already, I find myself missing Meghalaya and the friends we made on the trip.

We went on a customised trip to Meghalaya with Wanderon. We don’t know where to begin as this trip has been one of the best decisions we made. Every single place mentioned in the itinerary was mesmerisingly beautiful. We were able to cover all places. The accommodation booked in every place was more than what we expected. Our driver Mr. Biju Das, he is a very friendly, witty person who made these 6 days of our journey joyful. He also took us to places which was not part of the itinerary like Shillong peak, wah-kaba falls etc.,and he made sure we don’t miss out on any places. He would happily say “chaliye aap logon ko meri taraf se kuch dikhata hoon”. He also took us to nice restaurants like sardarji da dhaba( near to airport) flames & flavours( near elephant falls). Lastly I would like to thank Anusha who coordinated this trip with us and made sure everything was going well and there was no hassle or issues. Special thanks to ⁨Divas Agarwal for curating this itinerary as per our needs. Thank you Wanderon for this well coordinated trip. Looking forward for many more trips with you all. 😍🥰
