Can you handle the adrenaline of a professional sport played in -25°C at the "Roof of the World"? While most travelers know Spiti for its summer landscapes, ice hockey in Kaza has turned this high-altitude desert into India’s most extreme winter sports arena.

Every year between December and March, at an elevation of 3,724 meters (12,217 feet), local athletes compete on natural ice in a setting so thin on oxygen that even cheering for your team feels like an endurance test.

The Kaza ice hockey rink is officially one of the highest in the world, managed by the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul-Spiti (IHALS). If you are planning one of those rare winter Spiti expeditions, this is the raw, authentic cultural experience you didn't know you needed.

Watching the puck glide against a backdrop of 6,000-meter peaks is a sight that no summer traveler ever gets to see.

What Is Ice Hockey In Kaza?

Blog image

While the sport is young (starting around 2019), it has quickly become the heartbeat of Spiti’s winter. Before hockey, winter in Kaza meant total isolation. Today, the "off-season" is the most active time of year for locals.

Unlike the refrigerated arenas in cities, the Kaza ice hockey rink is purely a gift of the climate. As one of the highest ice hockey rinks in India, it operates without expensive machinery or artificial cooling.

Instead, authorities simply sprinkle water on the clay ground, which freezes rock-solid overnight under the extreme Himalayan cold. It’s a perfect example of the desert’s resourcefulness, just the winter doing what it does best.

The Spiti Cup: Kaza’s Premiere Winter Event

Blog image

The biggest event on the calendar is the Spiti Cup, organized by the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul-Spiti (IHALS). It’s a week-long festival of speed and community pride that showcases the best of ice hockey in Kaza.

2026 Tournament Highlights

The most recent Spiti Cup (February 2026) saw a massive expansion:

  • The Teams: 22 matches featuring five zones namely Center, Lahaul, Pin, Sham, and Tod.
  • Winners: Center Zone dominated the Senior Men’s and Women’s categories, while Sham Zone took the U-18 title.
  • The Atmosphere: The event now includes a Speed Skating Championship, a vital part of the winter sports Spiti valley ecosystem.

Traveler Tip: The best time to visit Spiti valley for ice hockey is during the Spiti Cup window, typically late January to early February.

What The Experience Is Actually Like

Blog image

If you’re imagining an NHL-style arena, adjust your expectations. This highest altitude ice hockey experience is far more raw:

  • The Setting: It is an open-air rink with no roof. You’ll be bundled in layers, sitting on the edge of the Himalayan air watching high altitude ice hockey.
  • The Ritual: Opening ceremonies often involve traditional prayers by local monks. Watching a monk in crimson robes stand against the white ice and blue hockey boards is a photographer’s dream.
  • The Skill: Don't be fooled by the "grassroots" label. These players are fast and highly skilled, having trained for months at the highest ice hockey rink India has to offer.

Best Time To Visit Spiti Valley For Ice Hockey

The winter season in Spiti runs from December to March, but for real crowd energy, aim for the Spiti Cup in January or February. This is the best time to visit Spiti valley for ice hockey if you want to see live league matches.

Can You Just Walk In?

Yes. The Kaza ice hockey rink is in the main town and access is open to the public. There's no ticketing system; just show up, find a spot, and bundle up.

Can You Play?

While the tournament is for teams, there are often "Open Skating" sessions in the evenings where travelers can rent skates and try ice hockey in Kaza for themselves.

What To Wear?

This cannot be overstated: it will be brutally cold.

  • Thermals (top and bottom): non-negotiable
  • A down jacket rated for at least -10°C
  • Windbreaker as an outer layer (Spiti wind is sharp)
  • Woolen beanie covering your ears
  • Waterproof gloves
  • High-ankle insulated boots as the ground around the rink will be packed snow and ice

How To Reach Kaza In Winter For Ice Hockey

Blog image

The most important thing for a winter traveler to know is that this is a 2-day journey, not a 1-day drive. The Manali–Kaza road is closed; you must take the Shimla–Kaza Route.

Shimla-Kaza Route: The Only Route

The Manali–Kaza road (Kunzum Pass) is strictly closed from October to June. You must take the Hindustan-Tibet Highway via Shimla and Reckong Peo.

The 2-Day Route Strategy:

  • Day 1: Shimla to Reckong Peo/Kalpa (8–10 hours). Stay overnight to acclimatize.
  • Day 2: Reckong Peo to Kaza (7–9 hours). This stretch is the most prone to "black ice"; start your journey by 7:00 AM. Check out detailed route breakdown in this Spiti Valley road trip guide.

Transport Options:

  • HRTC Bus: A daily bus leaves Reckong Peo for Kaza at roughly 7:30 AM (approx. ₹350). Warning: It may be cancelled without notice if it snows.
  • Shared/Private SUV: The most reliable way. A seat in a shared Sumo costs roughly ₹1,000–₹1,500. Hire a local driver; do not attempt to drive a rental car on black ice.

Read about the step-by-step breakdown on routes and accessibility for reaching Spiti Valley safely.

Connectivity & Cash

BSNL Postpaid is the only reliable network. Carry all your cash from Shimla or Reckong Peo. Kaza has one SBI ATM, but it frequently freezes or runs out of cash in winter. Check out the top essentials to carry for a Spiti Valley trip.

Where To Stay In Kaza In Winter

Blog image

Standard hotels turn off their water in winter to prevent pipes from bursting. Homestays in Kaza are your only choice for a comfortable stay.

  • Amenities: You will likely have a dry toilet (compost based) because running water is non-existent when it’s -25°C outside. You’ll be given buckets of hot water for washing.
  • Experience: Your life will revolve around the Bukhari (a traditional wood-fired heater in the center of the room). This is where everyone gathers to eat and socialize.
  • Cost & Booking: Price: ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per person per night.
  • Inclusions: This almost always includes a warm breakfast and dinner (expect hearty Thukpa, Thenthuk, and endless Butter Tea).
  • Decision Tip: Book via phone call rather than online portals. Popular winter stays include Sakya Abode, SpitiDiaries, or Nawang Homestay.

Why Is Ice Hockey In Kaza More Than A Sport?

If you're someone who finds beauty in unlikely places, winter Kaza with its hockey matches, its frozen rink, and its impossibly determined young athletes might just be the most memorable thing you see in Spiti. Not the monasteries. Not Chandratal. But ice hockey in Kaza.

Plan your winter Spiti trip right with WanderOn, time it for the Spiti Cup in January or February, and you'll leave with a story no summer traveler has ever told.

"We went Spiti Valley circuit bike trip with WanderOn. Entire Spiti circuit was so good and exciting. All the arrangements done by Wanderon are simply very good and extraordinary with all safety measures taken during the entire trip. They made sure all the group members are felt comfortable in the entire trip. All the plans were made much before. Hotels provided are very good and food is also very good. All the safety and medical instructions given to us are very clear and are very necessary for the smooth trip. We had 3 captains - Aditya, Sumit and Azaz. All are very cool, knowledgeable and engaging with the group members. They made sure the trip is very smooth and all the group members are felt included in the trip. From the time of arrival to departure, WanderOn folks made sure everything is smooth as per the plan. For the bike trip, we had marshal at the front, sweep at the back, backup van and tempo traveller coming along with us all the time. With all these arrangements, I personally felt safe during the trip. Camps at Kaza and Chandertaal were my first time camp experiences, both were very good and arranged properly thanks to the on-field staff. I got to know many group members are not first timers with Wanderon and heard good experiences with Wanderon before. From the start to end, captains made sure everyone reached safely at every checkpoint until we reached our homes which I felt was very good. Overall I would recommend WanderOn for the spiti bike trip to everyone. Looking forward to go to other adventurous trip through WanderOn."

"I am more of a solo traveller kind of a person but Spiti Valley trip was something that was beyond my scope of planning and management. But it was also a destination that I always wanted to travel to and hence, I went through several tour planner options and landed up with WanderOn and I am glad I did. They provided one of the best travel experiences of my life, a memorable one, ensuring we had the best opportunity to explore to our heart's content in the safest way possible. Our tour captains — Mohit, Nitin, Abhimanyu — made sure we were all safe and that we had the best time possible out there. Not only were we enchanted by the beauty of the places were travelled to (Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, Rekong Peo, Nako, Tabo, Kaza, Hikkim, Langza, Komic, Gue Monastery) but also we were given good quality accommodation with good food. The guidance of our captains helped us and they made sure the long journeys in between places did not feel tiresome. We also got to stop at additional picturesque places by the Spiti River. The best part of the journey was our time by the Baspa River in Chitkul. Also, the farewell gathering after our last lunch was so heartwarming. Thank you WanderOn for giving me such a great time at these places! Looking forward to travelling with you again, also hoping to reconnect with the same captains! 🤘🏻"

"Spiti Valley with WanderOn was hands down one of the most memorable experiences of my life. From the very first day till the last goodbye hug, everything was so well-curated, fun, and full of warmth. A huge shoutout to our amazing trip captains Nitin, Mohit, and Abhimanyu. They didn’t just lead a group, They built a family out of strangers. The way they managed everything from the smallest hiccup to keeping everyone’s energy high at 15,000 ft was truly commendable. Every morning felt like a new adventure, and every night ended with laughter and stories under the Spitian sky. Undoubtedly the best captains I have ever travelled with. The best part? The genuine sense of community. Whether it was helping each other acclimatise to the altitude, sharing chai breaks, having fun sessions after daily briefing or dancing by the bonfire at Kalpa it all felt beautifully unscripted. Spiti itself is pure magic surreal mountains, the peace of monasteries, starry skies that make you forget time. And WanderOn made sure we experienced it not as tourists, but as travelers. If you’re ever planning to explore offbeat India go with WanderOn. You won’t just come back with pictures; you’ll return with memories, friendships, and stories for a lifetime. Can’t wait for my next trip with you guys! 💛"
