Jaswant Thada: The Architectural Marvel In Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Jaswant Thada is decorated with carved marble sheets showcasing the marble sculpting skill. The monument has a temple-like appearance with several domes and some parts even resemble the Taj Mahal, hence Jaswant Thada is also known as the “Taj Mahal of Marwar”.

The monument is surrounded by beautiful, gardens and a peaceful lake. It also houses 3 more cenotaphs. 

The cenotaph has beautiful lattice screens and a memorial site for a peacock that is said to have flown into the funeral pyre during a royal cremation ceremony.

Jaswant Thada Jodhpur was built in 1899 as a memorial site for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II by his son, Maharaja Sardar Singh. It was constructed as a cremation ground for the royal family of Jodhpur. The monument was designed by the famous architect Lallu Lal, who also designed the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. 

Jaswant Thada Jodhpur was inaugurated by the renowned Indian freedom fighter, Mahatma Gandhi. This makes Jaswant Thada one of the monuments in India to be officially opened by Gandhi.
