Visa Free Entry In Sri Lanka Starting 1st October 2024

Some exciting news coming your way as citizens of 35 countries will soon get visa free entry in Sri Lanka, which includes residents of India, the United States, the United Kingdom and several other countries.

This initiative has been taken to boost tourism in the country, and travellers will get visa-free access to Sri Lanka for the next six months after October.

Starting October 1, 2024, Sri Lanka will offer visa-free entry to citizens from 35 countries, including India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This six-month initiative aims to boost tourism and strengthen international ties. The move will make travel to Sri Lanka more accessible and appealing, especially for Indian tourists, who have historically been the largest group of international visitors to the island.

The visa-free access will also be available to travellers from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, and several other nations. This expansion follows a successful pilot project that began in October 2023, which granted free visas to citizens from seven countries, including India and China.

India is particularly important for Sri Lankan tourism. Indian tourists made up 20% of all international arrivals in 2023, with over 246,000 visitors. The new visa-free policy is expected to increase these numbers and make it even easier for Indians to visit Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has been recovering from challenges, including the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. Tourism earnings reached $1.5 billion in the first half of 2024, a significant increase from $875 million the previous year. The new visa-free policy for 35 countries is part of a strategy to revitalise the tourism sector and attract more visitors.

This policy continues Sri Lanka’s efforts to attract more Indian tourists, following initiatives such as waiving visa fees in 2023 and hosting tourism roadshows in Indian cities. The visa-free entry makes it more convenient and cost-effective for Indian travellers to explore Sri Lanka.
