How To Reach Ladakh

By Air: Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is the only airport in Ladakh, which is well connected to Indian cities such as Delhi. Acclimatize well since flying directly into Leh exposes you to sudden high altitudes.

By Road: The road is the heart of any classic trip to Ladakh. The two routes to reach Ladakh are the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway. These passes are highly season-dependent.

By Rail: Leh has no railway station of its own. The nearest railway station to Leh is Jammu Tawi around 670 km away. You can continue your onward trip to Ladakh via road.

Best Time To Visit Ladakh

• Peak Season (June to September): This is the best time to visit Ladakh. Both the highways, Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh Highway, are mostly open and accessible, and spots like Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley are easier to reach. Fuel Stations On Srinagar-Leh Highway

• Srinagar & Ganderbal: Plenty of choices at the starting point
• Sonamarg: A newly opened petrol station. However, reliability is a little lower.
• Dras: A top-up stop between Sonmarg and Kargil.
• Kargil: A major refueling hub with several stations.
• Mulbekh: A small stop past Kargil where fuel can be limited.
• Lamayuru: Near the famous Moonland monastery, with a possible top-up.
• Khalsi: Roughly 122 km from Kargil and 95 km before Leh, a handy midpoint fill.
• Basgo: A small settlement before Leh with limited fuel.
• Nimmoo: A useful pump on the final approach to Leh.
• Near Gurudwara Pathar Sahib: A fuel option on the run into Leh, close to the city.
• Leh: Several year-round pumps, including the Budha and Chubi filling stations.

Fuel Stations On Manali-Leh Highway

• Manali: Several pumps in town, so start the drive with a completely full tank.
• Tandi: The most important fuel stop on the route. After Tandi there is no pump for roughly 300 km.
• Keylong: Limited fuel at best. Treat Tandi as your real last fill.
• Karu: The first pump after the long gap, around 40 km before Leh.
• Leh: Year-round pumps, so top up fully before any onward trips.

Leh → Nubra Valley

• Khalsar: A fuel stop after the Khardung La crossing.

Pangong Tso → Hanle

ATM Availability In Ladakh And Along The Route

• Srinagar: Plenty of ATMs at the start of the route, a good place to load up on cash before you set off.
• Kargil: Several working ATMs, the main spot to top up your cash on the Srinagar to Leh leg.
• Manali: Numerous ATMs in town, so withdraw what you need before heading onto the highway.
• Keylong: A few ATMs but limited and not always stocked.
• Leh: The most reliable place for cash in the region with several ATMs. Withdraw enough here for the whole trip.
• Nubra: A couple of ATMs around Diskit, but they can be out of cash or offline.

Ladakh Actual Road Conditions

• Srinagar-Leh Highway: This highway is usually the first to open around late April-March, depending on the snow conditions. Zoji La Pass acts as the gatekeeper and closes with heavy snowfall. So, it is better to check the latest updates before planning your Leh Ladakh holiday packages.
• Manali-Leh Highway: This highway usually opens later, typically at the end of May or in June. You can journey through this highway once passes like Baralacha La and Tanglang La are cleared. 
• Roads within Ladakh: Passes like Khardung La for Nubra and Chang La for Pangong are generally open through the season, though fresh snow can close them for short spells without warning.
• Route From Nubra to Pangong: If you are travelling from Nubra to Pangong Tso, you will pass through Shyok, which closes mid-June. Alternatively, on your Ladakh travel packages, you can journey through Wari La or Khardung La and Chang La.

Mobile Network In Ladakh

• Postpaid only: Prepaid SIMs issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in Ladakh. Mobile network in Ladakh is not reliable, so you need a postpaid connection to stay reachable.
• Best networks: BSNL postpaid has the best reach in remote areas. Jio and Airtel work well in Leh and the main towns. Carrying more than one network helps.
• Leh: The most reliable spot for calls and data where most postpaid networks work without trouble.
• Nubra and Pangong: Signal is limited and mostly confined to main villages like Diskit, Hunder and Spangmik. Expect dead zones along the way.
• Remote areas: Places like Hanle, Tso Moriri, the high passes, and Zanskar have almost no coverage, so plan to be offline for stretches.
• A simple tip: Download offline maps and let family know in advance that you will be out of touch for parts of the Ladakh trip.

Permits Required For Ladakh: 2026 Update

How to acclimatise in Ladakh

• Rest for the first 24 to 48 hours after reaching Leh with no strenuous activity or high-altitude excursions.
• Ascend gradually and follow the principle of climbing high during the day but sleeping at a lower altitude where possible.
• Drink plenty of water and eat light, regular meals.
• Avoid alcohol and smoking in the first few days, since both make adjustment harder.
• Do not push through severe symptoms. If they get worse, the safest response is to descend.
