This route is perfect if you want a smoother and more scenic entry into Ladakh. You pass through places like Sonmarg, Drass and Kargil before you reach Leh. The altitude rises slowly allowing your body more time to adjust. That’s why many travellers prefer this route in Srinagar to Leh road trip packages.
This is the most famous Ladakh road trip route and feels like a real adventure from start to finish. You cross high mountain passes, rough roads, waterfalls, and endless mountain views, which is why it’s one of the most popular choices for a Manali-to-Leh road trip package. It’s especially loved by bikers booking a Leh Ladakh package with bikes because the ride is challenging, thrilling, and absolutely unforgettable.
This is the classic Ladakh route that covers the biggest highlights together. You cross Khardung La Pass, explore the sand dunes of Nubra Valley, and then drive towards the bright blue Pangong Lake. If you want mountains, lakes, valleys, and famous roads all in one trip, this route gives you everything.
This is the perfect way out for those who are seeking a little bit of peace from the hustle and bustle of Ladakh. The serenity of the landscape, the calm nights under the vast sky at Hanle, and the high motorable road that will take you through the challenging terrain at Umling La make this trip worth it.
The drive to Tso Moriri is calm, scenic, and less crowded than Pangong. You pass through open valleys, mountain roads, and tiny villages before reaching the beautiful high-altitude lake. It’s a great route for travellers who want peaceful views and a slower travel experience.
Ladakh road trip is an adventure, but it is different from a regular vacation. The roads are longer, the altitude is higher, and the weather can change quickly. A few key facts that you should be aware of prior to your travel will ensure that you have a safe and comfortable journey. These include:
1. Acclimatization Is Absolutely Crucial
Ladakh lies at extremely high altitudes, thus making acclimatization essential. Rest for at least 48 hours after reaching Leh, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and smoking initially, and consult a doctor before taking medicines like Diamox for acute mountain sickness.
2. Best Time for Ladakh Road Trip
The ideal time for a road trip to Ladakh is between June and September, when the roads like Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh are open. In April and May you can fly into Leh, but many of the mountain passes may still be snow-blocked. Sometimes monsoon season causes landslides or delays on roads in Himachal and Kashmir.
3. Road Conditions Can Be Tough
Ladakh roads are full of amazing views, but some stretches can be bumpy, narrow, or covered with water crossings. Long driving hours are also common, especially on the Manali–Leh route. The travel plans may change a bit, since the weather in the mountains can change at any moment.
4. Permits Are Required for Popular Areas
Popular destinations like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri require permits to enter. WanderOn arranges these permits for travellers, but carrying original ID cards and photocopies is still important during the trip.
5. Network Connectivity is Limited
Only postpaid SIM cards from BSNL, Airtel, and Jio work properly in most parts of Ladakh. Even then, the network can disappear in remote areas like Pangong, Hanle, and Tso Moriri, so don’t expect strong internet everywhere.
6. Carry Enough Cash
ATMs are mostly available only in Leh and Kargil. If you’re traveling, smaller cafés, shops, and remote villages may not accept online payments, so it’s always a good idea to have enough cash on you.
7. Pack Smart for Changing Weather
The weather in Ladakh changes very quickly. Ladakh can feel warm during the day and freezing cold at night. Some important Leh Ladakh road trip essentials include thermals, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, comfortable shoes, and basic medicines.
8. Keep Enough Days for the Trip
A Ladakh road trip is best enjoyed slowly. Ideally, plan at least 6–9 days so you get enough rest, proper acclimatization, and time to actually enjoy the mountains instead of rushing through them.
