If you're figuring out how to reach Pattaya from Bangkok, the most useful thing to know is that you may not need to enter Bangkok at all. Most Indian travellers land at Suvarnabhumi Airport, and a direct bus runs from there to Pattaya. That saves you a cross-city transfer and a second round of luggage handling.

This guide covers all the main ways to travel from Bangkok to Pattaya, including airport buses, private taxis, shared transfers, and the weekend train. We have also included the latest fares, journey times, and practical booking details checked in October 2026.

You’ll also find clear information on how to reach your hotel after arriving at Pattaya Bus Terminal or the railway station, so you can plan the entire journey from Bangkok to your accommodation without any confusion.

Pattaya works best as a coastal stop within a longer route through the country. If you would like the transfers, stays, and sightseeing arranged in one plan, our Thailand tour packages include Pattaya alongside Bangkok and the islands.

How to Reach Pattaya from Bangkok: Which Option Suits You

Embedded media

Which option suits you depends on where you are standing when you begin. If you are landing at Suvarnabhumi, take the direct airport bus to Pattaya (the #389 Roong Reuang service) and skip Bangkok entirely. If you are already in the city, take a bus from the Ekkamai terminal, which is the most convenient departure point for anyone staying around Sukhumvit.

A group of three or four, or anyone carrying heavy luggage, should book a fixed-price taxi, because the cost per head drops sharply and you are dropped at your hotel door. Larger parties of friends or family often choose Thailand group tour packages, which arrange private vehicles and transfers in advance so nobody has to negotiate fares on arrival. The train is worth taking only if you enjoy rail travel for its own sake, since it is the slowest option.

Distance, Fares, and Journey Times Compared

The Bangkok to Pattaya distance is about 147 km by road, and almost all of it runs along Motorway 7, a toll motorway that heads southeast from the capital toward the Gulf of Thailand coast. In normal traffic the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours by taxi and 2 to 2.5 hours by bus, and the main variable is how long it takes to clear Bangkok's own roads at the start. Weekday mornings and Friday evenings are the slowest times to leave, so the same trip can take noticeably longer than the figures suggest.

The table below compares the four ways to make the journey on cost, travel time and arrival point, which is useful for anyone fitting Pattaya into a wider plan for Thailand tourism. Every bus and minivan ends at North Pattaya Bus Station, while taxis can take you directly to your hotel. All prices and timings were checked as of October 2026.

ModeCost (THB)Travel TimeWorth Knowing

MinivanSimilar to a busSlightly quickerTighter seating, same arrival point
Taxi or private car1,350 to 2,5001.5 to 2 hoursBest for groups and late arrivals

Note: Every bus and minivan from Bangkok ends at North Pattaya Bus Station, so your onward plan from there is the same whichever one you choose.

Landing at Suvarnabhumi: Take the Direct Bus and Skip Bangkok

Embedded media

For anyone landing at Suvarnabhumi, the Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya bus is the better route. The #389 Roong Reuang service runs from the airport straight to Pattaya, so there is no taxi into the city, no change of terminal, and no second wait in Bangkok traffic. If you are searching for the route from BKK to Pattaya, this is the service that can be availed.

Going into Bangkok first adds a transfer, a terminal, and a second ticket queue to a trip that already takes two hours or more on the road, and the direct bus removes all three. Services run through the day but not all night, so check the last departure against your landing time before relying on this option. If your flight lands close to midnight, a pre-booked taxi is the safer choice.

There is one exception. Don Mueang Airport has no equivalent direct service, so anyone landing there needs to go via the city. Our Thailand airports guide explains which airport serves which type of flight and how Don Mueang differs from Suvarnabhumi.

Taking the Bus from Central Bangkok

If you are already in Bangkok, the Bangkok to Pattaya bus is the sensible default. At roughly THB 119 to 131, it costs a fraction of a taxi, and the journey takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic leaving the city.

  • Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal: The Easiest Choice from Sukhumvit: The Eastern Bus Terminal at Ekkamai sits beside the BTS station of the same name, so it is easy to reach from anywhere along Sukhumvit. Buses to Pattaya leave from here at regular intervals through the day, and for most travellers staying in central Bangkok this is the terminal to use.
  • Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal: For North Bangkok and Don Mueang: The Northern Bus Terminal at Mo Chit also runs Pattaya services. It suits travellers staying in the north of the city or arriving from Don Mueang, but for most visitors it means a longer ride across Bangkok first.
  • Minivans: Quicker, but Tighter and Less Predictable: Minivans cover the same route a little faster, but they seat more people in less space and leave when full rather than at fixed times. They work well if you are travelling light and want to arrive earlier. If you are tall or carrying a large bag, take the full-size bus instead.

When to Book Bus Tickets in Advance?

On weekends and public holidays, buses fill up, so book ahead at the terminal counter or through an online booking platform. On weekdays, buying a ticket on the day is usually fine.

Taxi or Private Car: What It Costs and When It Pays Off

Embedded media

A taxi is the most expensive option and, for the right group, the best one. Expect to pay THB 1,350 to 2,500 for a journey of 1.5 to 2 hours. The range is wide because the Bangkok to Pattaya taxi fare is usually negotiated rather than metered, and it varies with the vehicle, the hour, and where you start.

  • How to Agree on a Fair Fare and Check the Tolls: Agree on the price before you get in, and confirm that the Motorway 7 tolls are included; otherwise, the driver may add them at the end. The Grab app also works for this route, and its upfront fare removes the haggling, though prices rise at peak times.
  • When a Taxi Beats the Bus? A taxi wins in three situations: a group of three or four splitting the fare, a late-night arrival when buses have stopped, and any trip with a lot of luggage. For a solo traveller on a normal schedule, the bus is better value.

The Train to Pattaya: Cheap and Scenic, But Slow

Embedded media

The Bangkok to Pattaya train is cheap and scenic, but it is neither the fastest nor the most convenient way to go. Fares run from THB 31 to 170, and the journey takes 2.5 to 4 hours. It suits rail enthusiasts and budget travelers with time to spare, while anyone working to a schedule should take the bus.

  • Weekday Ordinary Service (#283): The weekday ordinary train is the slow, inexpensive one, stopping often and taking the longest. It is the service to choose only if the journey itself is the point.
  • Weekend Rapid Service (#997): The weekend rapid is quicker and costs more. Confirm the departure station and the current timetable before planning around either train, because the trains run less often than the buses and a missed departure can cost you half a day.

From North Pattaya Bus Station to Your Hotel

Embedded media

Whichever bus you take, you arrive at North Pattaya Bus Station, which sits some distance from the beachfront hotels. Getting from there to your hotel is the part many travelers do not plan for.

  • How Shared Baht Buses Work: Pattaya runs on baht buses, the shared pickup trucks known locally as songthaews. They follow set routes along the main roads, and you flag one down, press the bell when you want to get off and pay the driver as you leave. A short hop costs around THB 10, though you should confirm the current fare when you board.
  • How to Avoid Inflated Private-Hire Quotes: Drivers will sometimes quote a private-hire price to a visitor who looks new, and that price can be several times the shared fare. Politely decline and wait for a shared truck on a main road, or use Grab for a fixed fare. Knowing the difference between a shared baht bus and a charter saves you money from the first ten minutes of your stay.

How Long to Stay in Pattaya and What to Pair It With?

Once you know how to reach Pattaya from Bangkok, the next question is how long to stay. Pattaya can be a day trip, but the return journey alone takes four to five hours on the road. We recommend at least one night, which gives you an evening and a full morning rather than a day spent mostly in transit.

The beaches are at their best between November and February, when the skies are clear and the sea is calm, and the rains from May to October make the coast less reliable. To choose the right month for beach weather, read about the best time to visit Thailand.

Pattaya also pairs well with a few more energetic days in the capital, since the two are only a couple of hours apart by road. Before you head to the coast, you can look through our list of adventure activities in Bangkok, which covers options from water sports to cycling tours.

If you are heading north afterwards, our how to reach Chiang Mai from Bangkok guide covers the flights, trains and buses, and the overnight train is a popular choice for travellers who want to save a night's accommodation.

Thank you WanderOn for a wonderful trip to Thailand in May 26. Right from customizing our trip based on our tight budget for a family of 4, to providing pre-trip updates and instructions and on ground support, we had a smooth and extremely enjoyable trip. Specially mention to Swayam Gupta, who almost personally made sure our requirements for the trip were met - budget, type of rooms and locations, (where other travel agents gave up trying). Another special mention is for our POC Deepika Yadav, who coordinated our trip right from arrival to return and kept us well informed about Dos and don'ts and other aspects of the trip. This trip turned out to one of the best experiences for us, thought it was not our first time in Thailand. Would heartily recommend WanderOn as a trusted travel partner for planning vacations. Kudos to the team!
