Bangkok does not have a beach of its own. The city sits about 30 km inland from the Gulf of Thailand, and the closest stretch of swimmable sand is Bangsaen Beach in Chonburi province, roughly 106 km away and about 90 minutes by road. Anyone planning a Bangkok beach day is really planning a short trip out of the city.

Bangkok is a river city built along the Chao Phraya, and it has no beach within its urban area. The one district that technically touches the sea is Bang Khun Thian in the far south, but its shoreline is mangrove and tidal mudflat rather than sand, and it is used for conservation walkways and seafood restaurants instead of swimming.

Travellers searching for a famous beach in Bangkok are usually thinking of the Gulf coast that the city serves as a gateway to. The nearest part of that coast is Bangsaen in Chonburi, 100 km southeast, and from there the shoreline runs in two directions: east through Pattaya, Rayong and Chanthaburi; and west through Phetchaburi towards Hua Hin.

Which side you pick matters more than the distance, because the two coasts get their rain at different times of year. Motorway 7 has cut driving times to Chonburi and Chon Buri's southern coast considerably, and the nearer beaches are now comfortable same-day returns. You can find full details in our Thailand tourism guide.

If you would rather not work out buses, ferries, and timings for a Bangkok beach trip on your own, our Thailand tour packages can be booked with expert itineraries and transport already arranged.

Which Beaches Near Bangkok Most Visitors Head To?

Embedded media

These five are the best-known beach destinations near Bangkok and carry the bulk of the traffic out of the capital. They have the most hotels, the most frequent transport, and the most to do once you arrive, which is why these Thailand beaches are busiest on weekends.

Hua Hin Beach

Hua Hin Beach runs several kilometers south from the town pier to Khao Takiab Hill, about 200 km southwest of Bangkok and roughly three hours by road. It has been a royal retreat since the 1920s, which explains the long-established hotels, golf courses, and night market rather than the party strip found on the eastern seaboard.

The sand narrows considerably at high tide, so mornings are the better half of the day here. Horse rides and jet skis operate along the northern end.

Where to Go for a Quieter, Slower Trip?

One of the best beaches near Bangkok for couples, Hua Hin Beach is the strongest of them, with the widest range of quiet hotels and a beach that stays walkable well past sunset. Koh Samet comes second, mainly because the smaller southern bays such as Ao Wai and Ao Kiu stay almost empty even in high season.

Mae Phim is the least known and most genuinely quiet of the three, but it has fewer places to eat and almost nothing to do after dark. Chao Samran is the cheapest of the three by a wide margin.

Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach is a four-kilometer curve fronting Pattaya town, about 150 km from Bangkok and two to two and a half hours by bus from the Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal. It is the busiest beach in this guide, with hotels, restaurants, and water sports operators all along it.

Deckchairs and umbrellas are available along the whole strip, and it is the Bangkok beach option with the most operators competing for your money. The water is not the clearest on this coast, so most people come for the atmosphere and activities rather than swimming.

Jomtien Beach

Jomtien Beach sits five minutes south of Pattaya Beach and is the better choice of the two for swimming. It is wider, noticeably calmer, and cleaner, with a long promenade and a night market behind it. Families tend to prefer it because there is far less selling on the sand. Both beaches are served by the same buses from Bangkok, so the extra distance costs nothing in practice.

Koh Larn

Koh Larn, often listed as Coral Island, lies about 45 minutes by ferry from Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier and costs around THB 30 each way on the public boat. The water is clearly better than anything on the adjacent mainland, and Tawaen and Samae beaches handle most of the snorkeling, banana boat traffic, and various other adventure activities in Thailand.

Day-trippers can leave Bangkok early, spend five or six hours on the island, and still return the same night, though the last ferries fill quickly in high season.

Koh Samet

You can reach Koh Samet by taking a three-hour bus to Ban Phe, followed by a 40-minute ferry. Most of the island falls inside a national park, so foreign visitors pay a THB 200 entry fee on arrival.

Sai Kaew and Ao Phai on the eastern side have the whitest sand of anywhere reachable from the capital in half a day, and Sai Kaew fills with beachfront restaurants and fire shows after dark. It works far better as an overnight trip than as a day return.

These beaches around Bangkok get a fraction of the visitors, and several are barely known outside Thailand. Most need your transport or a cab for the last stretch, which is precisely why they stay quiet.

Bangsaen Beach

Bangsaen Beach is the closest real beach to Bangkok at around 100 km, reachable in about 90 minutes. It is busy with Thai families and almost empty of foreign visitors, which gives it a very different feel from Pattaya. The sand is broad and flat, deckchairs rent for a small fee, and the food stalls behind the promenade sell grilled seafood at local prices. The water is shallow a long way out, so it suits children well.

Bangsaen sits close to Nong Mon market, one of Chonburi's best-known stops for dried seafood, khao lam, and local sweets, so a beach day here doubles up nicely as a taste of shopping in Thailand beyond the Bangkok malls.

Chao Samran Beach

Chao Samran Beach in Phetchaburi is about 140 km from Bangkok and sees mostly weekend visitors from the capital. The name translates roughly as "seat of pleasure", and Thai kings used it as a retreat long before Hua Hin took over that role. It is a long, wide, calm-water beach with street food stalls and low-priced guesthouses, and on weekdays it is close to empty.

Sai Kaew Beach, Sattahip

Sai Kaew Beach sits inside a Royal Thai Navy zone at Sattahip, around 180 km from Bangkok, and is not the same beach as Sai Kaew on Koh Samet. Because access is controlled, it is unusually clean and well maintained, with free showers and toilets and plenty of parking. Foreign visitors pay a THB 100 entry fee, less for children. Watch your bags, as the resident monkeys are practised thieves.

Nang Ram Beach

Nang Ram Beach is a few kilometres further into the same navy area and shares its cleanliness and entry fee, which is around THB 50 for foreign visitors. The water is clear but shallow and rocky in places, so footwear helps. It has heavy tree cover behind the sand, which makes it one of the better places on this coast to sit out the middle of the day.

Mae Phim Beach

Laem Mae Phim Beach in Rayong is about 230 km from Bangkok and stays remarkably quiet outside weekends. It is a long, straight, sandy stretch known for sunsets, with beach chairs, cheap seafood and a handful of hotels along the coastal road. Traffic is light and the area has none of the noise of Pattaya, which is the point.

Chao Lao Beach

Chao Lao Beach in Chanthaburi is the furthest option at roughly 260 km and about four hours. It sits in a sheltered bay, the sand is soft and pale, and there are enough beachfront hotels and seafood places to make a weekend work. Low tide exposes a very wide flat, which is good for walking and less good for swimming.

Which Bangkok Beach Works for a Single Day Out?

Embedded media

Bangsaen is the only one that leaves a genuinely full day at the sea. The round journey runs about three hours in total, so an 8 am departure puts you on the sand before ten with no need to watch the clock.

Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach follow the same logic but require an earlier start because afternoon return traffic on Sukhumvit routinely adds an hour to the drive home. Koh Larn is possible but tight, and only if you catch the first ferry out of Bali Hai Pier and the last one back.

Hua Hin, Koh Samet, Mae Phim, and Chao Lao are all technically same-day returns, but seven or eight hours in a vehicle to buy four on the sand is a poor trade. That arithmetic is why the best beaches near Bangkok for a day trip are the three nearest ones and why everything past Jomtien is worth an overnight instead.

Where to Stay Overnight on Your Bangkok Beach Trip

  • Hua Hin and Pattaya hold the largest concentration of beach resorts near Bangkok, and both have properties across every price band. Hua Hin skews towards low-rise resorts with gardens and private beach access, with mid-range rooms typically running THB 2,500 to 5,000 per night. Pattaya and Jomtien have more high-rise hotels and more competition, so rates start lower, from around THB 1,200, and rise steeply for sea-facing rooms.
  • Other places to stay in Thailand include Bangsaen and Chao Samran, which are at the budget end, with guesthouses and small hotels starting at THB 800 per night. On Koh Samet, most accommodation is beachfront bungalows rather than resorts, and rates climb sharply between December and February. Mae Phim and Chao Lao have a small number of mid-range hotels each, and both are worth booking ahead on weekends despite being quiet on weekdays.

How Do You Get to the Coast from Bangkok?

You can reach the beaches around Bangkok almost entirely by road, with a short ferry leg for the two islands.

  • By bus: Buses to Pattaya, Ban Phe, and Rayong leave from Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal every 30 to 40 minutes, with fares between THB 130 and 200. Services to Hua Hin and Phetchaburi run from Sai Tai Mai Southern Terminal at similar frequency.
  • By minivan: Minivans cover the same routes from the Bangkok Bus Terminal at Chatuchak and are marginally faster, though luggage space is limited.
  • By train: Hua Hin is the only beach on this list with a useful rail connection. Trains leave Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal several times daily and take between four and five hours, with fares from THB 100 in second class.
  • By private car: A private cab to Pattaya costs around THB 1,800 to 2,500 one way and to Hua Hin around THB 2,500 to 3,200. This is the most practical option for families, and the only realistic way to reach Sai Kaew, Nang Ram, Mae Phim and Chao Lao without changing vehicles twice.
  • By ferry: Koh Larn is served from Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya and Koh Samet from Ban Phe. Public ferries cost THB 30 to 100; speedboats cost considerably more but cut the crossing roughly in half.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Bangkok Beaches?

November to February is the best window for a Bangkok beach trip, whichever stretch of coast you pick. Humidity drops, sea conditions are calm, and daytime temperatures sit in the high twenties. March to May is hot and still workable, but the middle of the day becomes uncomfortable on open sand.

The southwest monsoon runs from June to October and affects the eastern seaboard more than the Gulf coast west of the capital, which is why Hua Hin and Chao Samran often stay usable when Pattaya and Koh Samet are wet. Rain in this period tends to come in short, heavy bursts rather than all day.

Is the Trip Out of the City Worth It?

There is no beach in Bangkok itself, but there are eleven good ones within four hours of it, and the choice comes down to how much travel time you are willing to trade for quieter sand. Bangsaen and Pattaya Beach work for a day out; Hua Hin, Koh Samet, and Mae Phim are worth an overnight.

Anyone weighing up the beaches near Bangkok for the first time should start with Bangsaen, since it costs the least in both money and time. If sorting buses, ferries, and pier timings across a week sounds like more admin than holiday, our Thailand group packages cover most of the Bangkok beach circuit with transport and stays already booked.

Thank you WanderOn for a wonderful trip to Thailand in May 26. Right from customizing our trip based on our tight budget for a family of 4, to providing pre-trip updates and instructions and on ground support, we had a smooth and extremely enjoyable trip. Specially mention to Swayam Gupta, who almost personally made sure our requirements for the trip were met - budget, type of rooms and locations, (where other travel agents gave up trying). Another special mention is for our POC Deepika Yadav, who coordinated our trip right from arrival to return and kept us well informed about Dos and don'ts and other aspects of the trip. This trip turned out to one of the best experiences for us, thought it was not our first time in Thailand. Would heartily recommend WanderOn as a trusted travel partner for planning vacations. Kudos to the team!
