How to reach Krabi from Phuket is far simpler than it may look. The two provinces sit roughly 165 km apart by road, and a bus, shared minivan, or private car covers that stretch in two and a half to three and a half hours along Route 4 through Phang Nga. The only thing to know before booking is that there is no direct ferry between the two. Every boat option runs through Phi Phi, which turns the crossing into a half-day island hop rather than a transfer.
We have moved our groups along this stretch of the coast for years with our Thailand tour packages, by van and by boat, in high season and in monsoon. The right choice usually comes down to two questions: how much time you have and who you are travelling with. Here is how each option actually plays out on the ground.

How to Reach Krabi from Phuket at a Glance

The Phuket to Krabi distance works out to roughly 165 km if you set off from the southern beach towns of Patong, Kata, or Phuket Town. Depart straight from Phuket International Airport (HKT) instead, up at the northern tip near the Sarasin Bridge, and the drive shortens to around 150 km, since the airport already sits on the mainland side of the island. That short road stretch is also why the cheapest way from Phuket to Krabi is by road rather than by sea, with bus fares starting well under the price of a single ferry leg.

How to Reach Krabi from Phuket: All Ways to Travel

What is the best way to get from Phuket to Krabi?

There is no single answer to how to reach Krabi from Phuket, because the right choice depends on who you are traveling with. Shared minivans are the cheapest and most frequent, private cabs are fastest and make the most sense for families or airport arrivals, the public bus suits anyone who wants a fixed schedule and more luggage room, and the Phi Phi ferry is the scenic route for travelers with a spare day.

Phuket to Karbi Bus or Shared Minivan (The Value Pick)

Public road transport is the most economical way to cross the provincial line. That said, the experience differs depending on whether you choose a big bus or a minivan.

Express Government Buses

Big coaches run out of Phuket Bus Terminal 2 in Rassada (about 4 km north of Phuket Town center), not the old station in the middle of town. Buses toward Krabi leave roughly every hour between 7:00 AM and late afternoon, with tickets ranging from THB 150 to 250 depending on air conditioning.
The main drawback is where you land. Buses finish at Krabi Bus Terminal in Talat Kao, roughly 5 km north of Krabi Town and 25 minutes inland from Ao Nang. To get to the beach from there, you will need local transport:
  • Shared Songthaew (Passenger Truck): THB 60 to 100 per person to Ao Nang.
  • Tuk-Tuk or Local Taxi: THB 400 to 600 flat rate for the vehicle.

Shared Minivans

Minivans cut out extra station stops by picking you up at your hotel in major beach spots (Patong, Kata, and Karon) and dropping you off in Krabi Town, Ao Nang, or at Krabi Airport (KBV). Seats cost between THB 300 and 430.
What to expect on timing: Whichever answer you settle on for how to reach Krabi from Phuket, build some slack into the schedule if you are taking a shared van. The highway stretch itself takes about two and a half hours, but vans spend time collecting passengers from different hotels along the beach strips before leaving the island. A 7:30 AM pickup in Patong often loops around for 45 minutes before joining Highway 402, so plan for roughly three hours from pickup to drop off, including a short ten minute roadside break in Phang Nga.

Phuket to Krabi Ferry via Phi Phi (The Island-Hop Pick)

Taking the boat works best for Phuket to Krabi ferry if you treat the ride as an island outing rather than a fast transfer. Going from Phuket to Krabi via Phi Phi Islands means buying two boat tickets or a combined pass operated by local boat companies.

Krabi to Phuket Ferry Timings & How It Works

Morning ferries leave Phuket's Rassada Pier around 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM, reaching Tonsai Pier on Koh Phi Phi Don in about two hours. Afternoon boats depart Tonsai Pier for Krabi (Ao Nang, Railay West, or Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town) between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.
Catching the 8:30 AM ferry from Phuket leaves you with about four hours on Phi Phi Don:
  1. Pay the THB 20 cash entry fee at Tonsai Pier.
  2. Walk up to the famous Phi Phi Viewpoint (about 20 minutes uphill).
  3. Grab lunch in Tonsai Village before your afternoon boat to Krabi.
If you are staying at Railay Beach, book a boat that drops at Railay West. The ferry pulls right up to the shore, so you skip paying for an extra longtail boat transfer from Ao Nang.

Seasonal Notes

The Phuket to Krabi ferry operates smoothly during the dry season (November through April). From May to October, southwest monsoon winds create rougher seas. Boats between Phuket and Phi Phi run most days, but connecting trips from Phi Phi to Ao Nang and Railay are frequently paused for safety. If you travel during monsoon season, sticking to the road is your safest bet.

By Private Transfer or Krabi from Phuket Taxi

For anyone weighing up how to reach Krabi from Phuket without extra stops or schedule delays, a private vehicle booked as a Krabi from Phuket taxi is the easiest door to door choice.
[Phuket Hotel / Airport] ──► [Highway 4 through Phang Nga] ──► [Krabi Hotel / Pier]
(Patong or HKT Airport) (~2.5 Hours Direct) (Ao Nang / Railay)

Pricing & Car Choices

A private driver gets you there in about two and a half hours. Prices usually break down as follows:
  • Patong to Ao Nang (Ride-Hailing): THB 2,600 to 3,200 using apps like Grab or Bolt.
  • Pre-Booked Private SUV or Van: THB 3,000 to 4,000, including driver, fuel, and highway tolls.
  • Phuket Airport (HKT) to Krabi: THB 2,800 to 3,500.
Calculating the Phuket to Krabi taxi cost makes a lot of sense for small groups. Split four ways, a THB 3,200 car comes out to THB 800 per person, just a bit more than a minivan seat, but without pickup loops, luggage hassle, or rigid timetables.
If you land at Phuket Airport, booking a ride straight from the terminal saves you from traveling an hour south to Patong just to catch a minivan heading back north.

Which Option Should You Choose?

There is no single answer to how to reach Krabi from Phuket,  the right mode depends on who is travelling and how much of the day you are willing to give the journey.
  • Solo Travelers & Budget Backpackers: Take the shared minivan. It picks you up at your hotel, costs the least of any option, and drops you within walking distance of Ao Nang beach. If you would rather have a fixed seat, a proper luggage hold and a published departure time, the Phuket to Krabi bus from Bus Terminal 2 covers the same route for a similar fare, though it ends in Krabi Town and you will need a songthaew or Grab for the last stretch to the beach.
  • Families, Groups (3–4 People) & Airport Arrivals: Book a private transfer. Split three or four ways, the per-person cost sits close to a minivan seat, and it cuts the Phuket to Krabi travel time by up to two hours because the driver skips the pickup circuit around Patong and Kata. Most operators also run Phuket airport to Krabi door to door, so you can walk out of arrivals and go straight across without backtracking into Phuket Town first.
  • Travelers with Extra Time: Go by ferry via Koh Phi Phi Don. It takes longer and costs more than the road options, but it turns a transfer day into an island day, with a few hours ashore at Tonsai before the onward boat to Klong Jilad pier. Worth checking the season, since sailings thin out and get choppy through the June–October monsoon.
What to Do Before You Leave Phuket
Once you have settled how to reach Krabi from Phuket, use the time before departure well. Travellers with an afternoon transfer have sufficient time for Flying Hanuman in Phuket, the zipline course in the Kathu hills about twenty minutes from Patong, before departure. Fitting Krabi into Your Thailand Itinerary

Thailand tourism covers major islands that are most efficiently visited as a one-way circuit: two or three nights in Phuket, one night on Phi Phi, and then two or three nights in Krabi, divided between Ao Nang and Railay, departing from Krabi Airport rather than returning to Phuket. Travellers with additional time can continue to Koh Lanta, ninety minutes south by ferry between November and April. Those combining north and south should complete the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route first and fly south afterwards so that the coast forms the final stage of the trip.
Our fixed-departure Thailand group tour packages run this Phuket, Phi Phi, and Krabi circuit as a group, with the crossings, island accommodation, and Ao Nang to Railay boat transfers arranged in advance, leaving travelers to choose only the departure date that suits them.
