There is no single answer to how to reach Krabi from Phuket, because the right choice depends on who you are traveling with. Shared minivans are the cheapest and most frequent, private cabs are fastest and make the most sense for families or airport arrivals, the public bus suits anyone who wants a fixed schedule and more luggage room, and the Phi Phi ferry is the scenic route for travelers with a spare day. 

Phuket to Karbi Bus or Shared Minivan (The Value Pick)

Public road transport is the most economical way to cross the provincial line. That said, the experience differs depending on whether you choose a big bus or a minivan.

Express Government Buses

Big coaches run out of Phuket Bus Terminal 2 in Rassada (about 4 km north of Phuket Town center), not the old station in the middle of town. Buses toward Krabi leave roughly every hour between 7:00 AM and late afternoon, with tickets ranging from THB 150 to 250 depending on air conditioning.
The main drawback is where you land. Buses finish at Krabi Bus Terminal in Talat Kao, roughly 5 km north of Krabi Town and 25 minutes inland from Ao Nang. To get to the beach from there, you will need local transport:
  • Shared Songthaew (Passenger Truck): THB 60 to 100 per person to Ao Nang.
  • Tuk-Tuk or Local Taxi: THB 400 to 600 flat rate for the vehicle.

Shared Minivans

Minivans cut out extra station stops by picking you up at your hotel in major beach spots (Patong, Kata, and Karon) and dropping you off in Krabi Town, Ao Nang, or at Krabi Airport (KBV). Seats cost between THB 300 and 430.

Catching the 8:30 AM ferry from Phuket leaves you with about four hours on Phi Phi Don:
  1. Pay the THB 20 cash entry fee at Tonsai Pier.
  2. Walk up to the famous Phi Phi Viewpoint (about 20 minutes uphill).
  3. Grab lunch in Tonsai Village before your afternoon boat to Krabi.
If you are staying at Railay Beach, book a boat that drops at Railay West. The ferry pulls right up to the shore, so you skip paying for an extra longtail boat transfer from Ao Nang.

The Phuket to Krabi ferry operates smoothly during the dry season (November through April). From May to October, southwest monsoon winds create rougher seas. Boats between Phuket and Phi Phi run most days, but connecting trips from Phi Phi to Ao Nang and Railay are frequently paused for safety.
