If you've done Shillong and Cherrapunji and feel like you've seen Meghalaya — you haven't. Garo Hills, Meghalaya is the wild western part of the state, and a completely different world.

Spanning about 8,000 sq km, it's a remote, largely untouched region of dense subtropical forests, wild elephant corridors, red pandas, and Hoolock gibbons. Hidden inside these forests are some of Northeast India's most remarkable places such as the UNESCO-listed Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, the mythical Balpakram National Park, Siju Caves, and Wari Chora.

And running through all of it is the living culture of the Garo tribe (A·chiks) — visible in the food, the villages, and most spectacularly in the Wangala festival, where thousands gather every October-November to dance to a hundred drums.

If you want forest trails with no tourist queues, canyon kayaking, and one of India's most spectacular tribal festivals on your Meghalaya trip, Garo Hills is where you go. This Garo Hills travel guide covers everything you need to plan your trip.

Where Are Garo Hills Located?

Blog image

The Garo Hills form the westernmost part of Meghalaya in northeastern India. The region shares a long border with Bangladesh to the south and west, and Assam to the north. The terrain climbs to about 4,600 feet (1,400 meters), and the Simsang River is one of the major waterways here (source: Banglapedia).

Administratively, the area is split into five districts: East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, and North Garo Hills. Tura is the main town and the hub most travelers end up using. The entire region is one of the most underexplored places in Meghalaya.

Garo Hills is an entire region: dense subtropical forest, limestone cave systems that run deep, national parks with clouded leopards and Asian elephants, and villages where matrilineal traditions aren’t a museum piece, they’re daily life. Follow this Garo Hills guide to understand it better.

Best Time To Visit Garo Hills Meghalaya

Blog image

For most travelers, the best time to visit Garo Hills Meghalaya is October to April, which is also the best time to explore all of Meghalaya. You get the post-monsoon lift in the forests, cooler winter days, and far fewer weather-related road surprises. November stands out if you can line up your dates with the Wangala Festival.

June through September is the stretch to avoid if you have a choice. The monsoon in Meghalaya hits hard, roads can get tricky, and some trekking routes and forest areas shut down completely. The trade-off is that the landscape turns intensely green and dramatic, and a small number of seasoned travelers come specifically for the waterfalls and mist.

If you do go in monsoon season, keep your plans close to Tura and nearby areas, and use a local guide for any day trips.

How To Reach Garo Hills In Meghalaya

Blog image

By Air

The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati — about 220 km from Tura. There's also a Pawan Hans helicopter service connecting Guwahati to Tura (check schedules as these can change).

By Train

There are no well-connected railway stations inside Garo Hills itself. The most practical options:

  • Guwahati Railway Station — 220 km from Tura. Well-connected to major Indian cities.
  • Mendipathar (in North Garo Hills) is the closest station, but limited trains stop here.
  • Bongaigaon is another option in Assam, roughly 150 km from Tura.

By Road

This is how most travellers get here.

  • From Guwahati to Tura: 220 km, around 6–7 hours by road. Buses and shared taxis available.
  • From Shillong to Tura: 300+ km via Guwahati — plan for a long day.

Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) and private operators run night buses from Guwahati to Tura and other towns. Once inside Garo Hills, hire a local driver with a 4x4 or SUV. Roads to remote spots like Balpakram and Wari Chora are rough, and a local driver makes all the difference.

8 Best Places To Visit In Garo Hills

1. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve

Blog image

Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve and Garo Hills' most ecologically important spot. It's where you'll find the world's oldest wild orange species (Citrus indica) growing in its natural habitat — something found nowhere else on earth. The biodiversity here is staggering, from rare primates to the region's highest peak.

  • Location: CCXH+2C4, Tura, Meghalaya 794001
  • Wildlife: Red pandas, Asian elephants, Hoolock gibbons, stump-tailed macaque
  • Nokrek Peak: 1,412 m — highest point in Garo Hills
  • Permit needed — get it from the Forest Department in Tura before visiting

2. Balpakram National Park

Blog image

The Garo people call Balpakram National Park the "Land of Spirits", they believe departed souls rest in its gorges before moving on. It's remote, dramatic, and genuinely wild. Cliffs, plateaus, dense forests, and rare wildlife make it Garo Hills' most immersive experience.

  • Location: Rongchenggiri, Meghalaya
  • Wildlife: Wild elephants, red pandas, golden cats, tigers, pitcher plants
  • Access: Long drive to Baghmara + forest trek; best as an overnight trip
  • Local guide is non-negotiable — trails are unmarked, terrain is serious

3. Siju Caves

Blog image

Siju Caves is one of the longest cave systems in Asia in South Garo Hills, carved from limestone over millennia beside the scenic Simsang River. Known locally as the Bat Cave for good reason — 9 bat species live inside. It’s one of the most famous places to visit in Garo Hills among tourists.

4. Wari Chora

Blog image

Wari Chora is a hidden gorge in South Garo Hills where a crystal-clear river cuts through narrow limestone canyons. This is Garo Hills' most exciting adventure destination right now — winner of Best Offbeat Travel Experience at Northeast Tourism Awards 2025. This is one of the best places to visit in Garo Hills if you want to see nature doing its magic at peak.

  • Location: Agalgre, Meghalaya 794102
  • Activities: Kayaking, canyoneering, jungle trekking, cave exploration
  • Budget: ₹9,000–15,000/person for a 3-day trip (stay + activities)
  • Best time: October to March; visit on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds
  • Pro-Tip: Don't go solo — a tourist got lost and needed rescue in 2024; always hire a guide

5. Tura Peak

Blog image

Tura Peak offers the easiest big-nature experience in Garo Hills — a 5 km trek right from Tura town. The forest on the way up is thick with hornbills and gibbons, and the view from the top of the Jinjiram River plains is worth every step.

  • Location: Nawalgre, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya 794005
  • Trek: Starts at DC's Park; 45 mins–1.5 hrs one way
  • Spot: Hoolock gibbons, hornbills, langurs on the trail
  • Note: descent on tired legs is harder than the climb — pace yourself

6. Rongbang Dare Falls

Blog image

Rongbang Dare Falls is a waterfall which is basically a tributary of the Simsang River, hemmed in by tall bamboo-covered hills on both sides. The setting is what makes it special — not just the falls themselves. Most dramatic just after monsoon, and a major reason for increasing Garo Hills tourism.

7. Wachiwari Fish Sanctuary

8. Aminda Rangsa Art Village

Blog image

Aminda Rangsa Art Village is near Tura, brought to life by artist Handum Marak, whose intricate wood and stone carvings celebrate Garo wildlife and cultural motifs. Every corner has something to look at to know Garo Hills culture and tribes — worth an easy hour stop.

6 Amazing Things To Do In Garo Hills Meghalaya

Blog image

1. Trek To Nokrek Peak

The highest trek in Garo Hills, starting from Chandigre village at the foothills of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve. The trail passes through dense forest rich in orchids, rare citrus trees, and wildlife — the journey is as good as the summit.

  • Location: Chandigre village, West Garo Hills
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Best time: October to April
  • Pro-Tip: Permit needed from the Forest Department in Tura; hire a local guide

2. Kayaking & Canyoneering At Wari Chora

Kayaking and canyoneering is one of the best things to do in Garo Hills. You kayak into a narrow limestone canyon on the Rongdik River — towering cliffs on both sides, turquoise water below, complete silence all around. The canyon ride is short (about 10 minutes) but the setting is unlike any adventure sports in Meghalaya.

  • Location: South Garo Hills — Baghmara → Emangre → 15 km off-road → 1 hr trek
  • Best time: October to March
  • Cost: ₹9,000–15,000/person for a 3-day package (stay + activities)
  • Pro-Tip: Don't go solo — always use a local guide or operator (Baghmara Campers is well-regarded)

3. Birdwatching

Blog image

Garo Hills is one of Northeast India's most underrated birdwatching destinations. Hornbills, peacock pheasants, kingfishers, eagles, and rare endemics live across the reserve forests and river valleys here and there are almost no other birders around to disturb the quiet.

  • Top spots: Siju Bird Sanctuary, Nokrek reserve forests, Tura Peak trail
  • Best time: November to February (migratory species also present)
  • Pro-Tip: Hire a local birding guide in Tura for the best spots

4. Camping In The Wild

Garo Hills has genuine wild setting for camping in Meghalaya — forest campsites, not resorts. Wari Chora, Naphak Lake near Baghmara, and the forests around Balpakram are the best options. The Balpakram Forest Rest House is a favourite with serious trekkers. Camping is one of the best things to do in Garo Hills if you’re an avid explorer.

  • Best spots: Wari Chora, Naphak Lake, Balpakram FRH
  • Pro-Tip: Book FRH in advance through the Forest Department — limited rooms. Nights get cold from November onwards; carry warm layers

5. Village Homestay & Cultural Immersion

Staying in a Garo village, especially Emangre or Dabangre near Wari Chora, or Chandigre near Nokrek, gives you something no hotel can. You eat local food, share meals with your hosts, and actually see how a matrilineal community lives day to day.

  • Meals: Typically include Nakam Bitchi, Minil Songa, and rice beer (bitchi)
  • Pro-Tip: The Garo community follows matrilineal customs — women hold land rights and clan identity. Always ask before photographing people; respect goes a long way here.

6. Attend The Wangala Festival (100 Drums Festival)

The biggest cultural event in Garo Hills and one of the most electric festivals in Meghalaya and in all of Northeast India. Wangala is the Garo harvest festival, a thanksgiving to Saljong, the sun god.

Thousands gather at Asanang village, and the energy of the drumming and dancing is something you feel rather than just watch. Visitors are genuinely welcomed; one of the best ways to know about Garo Hills culture and tribes.

  • When: November 6th or 7th, 2026 (exact dates vary; check before planning)
  • Where: Asanang village, near Tura, West Garo Hills
  • What happens: Mass traditional dance by nomils (girls) and pantes (boys) to the beat of long drums (dama), bamboo flute music, traditional costumes, communal feasting
  • Pro-Tip: Book accommodation in Tura well in advance; it fills up fast during Wangala

What To Eat In Garo Hills?

Blog image

Garo food is earthy, smoky, and almost entirely unlike what you'll find in your home. Most dishes are boiled or steamed — minimal oil, maximum flavour from local herbs and fermented ingredients.

Some of the must-try food in Meghalaya include:

  • Nakam Bitchi: A gravy made with dried fermented fish (nakam), chilies, and local herbs. Served with rice. The soul of Garo cuisine.
  • Minil Songa: Sticky rice steamed inside bamboo tubes. The bamboo gives it an earthy aroma. Usually paired with meat curries.
  • Wak Pura / Wak Brenga: Pork cooked inside a bamboo pipe with local herb sam-sweng, green chilies, ginger, and salt. Unique preparation, distinctive taste.
  • Doo Kapa: Chicken cooked with local soda (kalchi, made from banana ash). A household staple.
  • Sobok Chatni: Banana flower chutney, nutritious and slightly bitter. Served alongside most Garo meals.
  • Bitchi (rice beer): A cultural cornerstone, offered to guests as a sign of hospitality. Try it if offered — declining can be considered impolite.

For vegetarians: options are limited. Most traditional Garo food centres around meat and fish. Ask specifically at homestays and local restaurants if you need vegetarian meals, most hosts will accommodate with some notice.

In Tura town, look for 'Marwari Bhojanalayas' for reliable, clean vegetarian meals if tribal food doesn't suit your diet.

Where To Stay In Garo Hills?

Blog image

Tura is your best base and has the most reliable accommodation. Outside Tura, you're staying in village homestays and forest rest houses — basic, but often in far better locations.

Stay In Tura

  1. Hotel Rikman Continental: Centrally located opposite Tura Market, 35 rooms, AC options, restaurant serving local Garo cuisine, free parking, 24-hour front desk. Good for budget-mid range. Rates from ~₹1,700/night.
  2. Lucetta Inn: A centrally located homestay with AC rooms, water heater, shared kitchen with microwave and fridge, and an ATM within walking distance. Good option for longer stays.

Stays Near Wari Chora (South Garo Hills):

  1. Baghmara Campers: Award-winning eco-tourism operator running jungle campsites and homestays in Siju and Emangre village. Best choice if you want your stay and adventure activities sorted together.
  2. Wari Chora Homestay, Emangre: Simple, clean rooms with private bathrooms, home-cooked Garo meals, electricity, and English-speaking staff. Right at the base for canyon activities.
  3. Chirikkam Homestay, Baghmara: Well-reviewed for hospitality and home-cooked food; convenient base for both Wari Chora and the fish sanctuaries.

Stays Near Nokrek (West Garo Hills):

  1. Chandigre Rural Tourist Resort: Run by the local Garo community, this eco-stay sits at the foothills of Nokrek Biosphere Reserve. Basic facilities, but the location makes it the natural base for the Nokrek Peak trek.
  2. Daribokgre Inspection Bungalow: Bookable through the Forest Department; limited rooms, so plan well in advance.

Book accommodation early if visiting during Wangala as Tura fills up fast in October–November.

How To Budget For Garo Hills Trip

Blog image

The Garo Hills are refreshingly affordable, and the budget for Garo Hills trip usually comes in lower than similar nature-and-culture destinations across the Northeast. Here’s a practical ballpark for a 5-day trip starting from Guwahati:

Approximate costs per person (2026 estimates):

  • Transport (Guwahati to Tura and back, shared cab): Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800
  • Accommodation (budget guesthouse or homestay): Rs 400 to Rs 800 per night
  • Accommodation (mid-range hotel in Tura): Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per night
  • Meals (local dhabas and homestay food): Rs 200 to Rs 400 per day
  • Safari and trekking permits: Rs 300 to Rs 800 depending on the site
  • Local transport within Garo Hills (shared jeeps, autos): Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for the trip
  • Total budget trip (5 days): Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000 per person
  • Total mid-range trip (5 days): Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per person

This doesn’t include flights to Guwahati. If you’re traveling during the Wangala Festival, lock in Tura accommodation early, availability drops fast, and prices typically move up.

Essential Travel Tips For Garo Hills

Blog image

A few practical details that often get glossed over:

1. Carry cash. ATMs in Tura are functional but unreliable in smaller towns and villages. Withdraw enough in Guwahati or Tura before heading into the interior.

2. Hire a local guide for forest areas. Balpakram and Nokrek are not places to navigate independently. A local guide improves both safety and the quality of wildlife sightings significantly. Check out hidden tourist scams in Meghalaya to avoid getting in any trouble.

3. Respect the matrilineal culture. Ask before photographing people, especially women and elders. A brief conversation and genuine interest go a long way.

4. Pack for variable weather. Even in winter, temperatures can drop sharply at higher elevations after dark. A light fleece and a waterproof layer are non-negotiable.

5. Mobile connectivity is patchy. BSNL has the best coverage in remote areas. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before leaving Tura.

6. Inner Line Permit (ILP) is NOT required for Indian nationals visiting the Garo Hills, unlike some other northeastern states. Foreign nationals should verify current entry requirements before travel.

7. Start driving early. Road conditions between towns can be slow, and most forest areas close to visitors by late afternoon.
