Early morning, ideally before 9:00 AM, gives the softest light, cooler air and the best odds of morning mist around the gate. Arriving early also cuts down the wait, since queues build steadily through the day.

At over 1,142 metres in the Bedugul highlands, Handara runs cooler, cloudier and wetter than southern Bali. A misty morning can give the gate its signature soft backdrop; heavy rain or low visibility can erase that backdrop entirely. Carry a light rain layer, and stay flexible on timing.

Is Visiting Handara Gate Worth It?

1. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple 

  • Handara Gate to Ulun Danu Distance: 3-5 km
  • Drive Time: Around 5–10 minutes, depending on traffic

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple  sits on the shores of Lake Beratan and is known for its distinctive lakeside setting. The complex includes several shrines and meru towers, with the lake and surrounding mountains forming much of the backdrop. The temple is associated with Dewi Danu, the Balinese Hindu goddess of lakes and water, and is an important religious site as well as a major sightseeing stop in Bedugul.
The temple’s most recognizable view comes from the shrines standing close to the water, which can create the impression that they are floating on the lake. The complex also has gardens and open areas around the shoreline, giving visitors more to explore beyond the main photo spot.
2. Twin Lakes Viewpoint

  • Route: via Jl. Pancasari - Baturiti and Jl. Raya Wanagiri
The Bali Twin Lakes, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan are two crater lakes separated by a forested ridge. The Wanagiri area has several elevated viewpoints overlooking the lakes, with different angles. Most are roadside stops or involve only a short walk.The surrounding forest and hills give the area a cooler mountain setting than southern Bali. On clear days, both lakes can be seen from the higher viewpoints, while early mornings can bring clouds and mist over the water.

How to Reach Handara Gate, Bali

The gate sits in Pancasari, Buleleng, in the island's north, well outside the usual tourist stretch of Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud. Getting there takes good planning: hiring a private driver or building it into a full-day route works best, especially when pairing it with Ulun Danu Beratan, the Twin Lakes, and other Bedugul stops along the way.
