The quickest answer to how to reach Halong Bay from Hanoi is a shared limousine van on the expressway, which covers about 165 km in roughly two and a half hours and collects you from your Old Quarter hotel in the morning. Before you book one, open your cruise confirmation. Most cruises either include the Hanoi to Halong Bay transfer in the fare or sell it as a modest add-on, and that one check settles most of the planning.
The road has changed this trip. The expressway through Hai Phong and over the Bach Dang Bridge cut a drive that once took four hours on the old highways to about two and a half, which is why a same-day start from Hanoi now works comfortably. What still catches travellers out is the pier, because Tuan Chau, Ha Long City and Got are three separate starting points.
This guide covers both directions, including the afternoon return and the airport run on a flight day. If you would rather have the transfer, the cruise and your Hanoi nights arranged as one trip, ourVietnam tour packages are planned around this route.

Worth knowing: Prices are approximate for October 2026 and rise on weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Rupee figures assume about 300 VND to ₹1.
Weather moves this corridor more than traffic does. Between July and September, storm warnings can suspend sailings at short notice, and winter mornings often bring low mist over the karsts. For the months when the capital and the bay are both at their best, see our guide to thebest time to visit Hanoi.
If your cruise does not include a transfer, the limousine van is the right way to travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay. In Vietnam, "limousine" means a converted minivan, usually a Ford Transit or Hyundai Solati body, refitted with 9 to 11 reclining leather seats, curtains and charging points. Operators list it as the halong bay limousine bus, and a one-way seat costs about 250,000 to 400,000 VND.
How pickup and drop-off work
Most vans collect door to door within the Old Quarter, which takes 30 to 45 minutes before the van reaches the ring road. They drop at hotels in Bai Chay or directly at the cruise pier, so tell the driver your pier when you board rather than assuming it. You can book through your hotel front desk, or on apps such as 12Go and Vexere, where seat maps and operator reviews are visible.
The real journey time
The expressway leg runs between two hours fifteen minutes and two hours forty-five minutes. Add the Old Quarter pickups and a 20-minute stop at a roadside handicraft centre in Hai Duong, and three hours door to door is the honest figure to plan around. Ask for a seat in the first two rows, as the back row takes every expansion joint on the expressway.
Budget and Premium: Bus, Private Car, Seaplane
The van suits most travellers, but the cheaper and costlier options each have a clear use.
Public bus
Public buses run from Gia Lam and My Dinh bus stations to Bai Chay bus station in Ha Long City. The Hanoi to Halong Bay bus price is roughly 120,000 to 200,000 VND, and the ride takes three to three and a half hours with stops along the way. You then need a taxi or Grab to reach the pier, which adds another 15 to 20 minutes. It works well for backpackers staying overnight in Bai Chay, but it is a poor choice when a boat boards at noon.
Private car
A private four-seat or seven-seat car costs about 1.6 to 2.5 million VND one way and covers the distance in two to two and a half hours, without hotel pickups or a shopping stop. For three or four travellers the cost per head comes close to the van, and you leave when you choose. Confirm in writing that tolls and waiting time are included.
Seaplane
Hai Au Aviation has operated seaplane flights to the bay at roughly USD 250 to 350 per person, with about 45 minutes in the air. The view of the karsts from above is remarkable, but flights are cancelled whenever visibility drops, which happens often in winter. Treat it as a special-occasion splurge with a road transfer as the backup.
Why the train loses here
A rail line does reach Ha Long, but the service is slow, runs infrequently and ends well away from the cruise piers. Flying is not an option either, since Van Don Airport has no practical service from Hanoi. On this corridor, the road wins on every count.
Ha Long Bay to Hanoi: The Return Leg
The journey from Halong Bay to Hanoi uses the same vans, cars and buses, but the timing is set by when your boat docks. The return trip is where most plans go wrong, usually because of a flight booked too early.
After a 2D1N or 3D2N cruise: Boats dock between 10:30 and 11:30 am after brunch, and shuttles reach the Old Quarter around 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
After a day cruise: Boats return to the pier around 4 to 4:30 pm, which puts you back in Hanoi at about 7:30 to 8 pm.
Without a shuttle: Limousine vans leave Bai Chay and Tuan Chau through the afternoon, and booking the return seat when you book the outbound one saves a scramble at the pier.
Going straight to Noi Bai Airport
Many cruise shuttles and limousine vans will drop you at Noi Bai for a small surcharge, and a private car takes two and a half to three hours. If you disembark at 11 am, book a domestic flight leaving after 6 pm and an international flight leaving after 8 pm. Anything earlier leaves no room for a slow afternoon on the expressway.
Many travellers pair the bay with a few days in the capital, and our hanoi tour packages combine the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the street-food lanes with the cruise. For a longer trip that adds Ninh Binh, Da Nang or the south, take a look at our Vietnam tour packages, which handle the transfers, the cruise and the pier logistics so that you only need to show up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your right to Know!
01
How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?
The Hanoi to Halong Bay distance is about 165 km by road, most of it on the expressway through Hai Phong. Tuan Chau and Got piers sit at slightly different distances, but the driving time to each is similar.
02
How long does Hanoi to Ha Long Bay take?
The drive takes about two and a half hours, or close to three hours door to door once Old Quarter pickups and the midway rest stop are counted. Public buses take three to three and a half hours.
03
Is the Ha Long Bay transfer included in cruises?
On many cruises it is. Mid-range and upmarket boats often include a shared shuttle from the Old Quarter, while budget boats sell it as an add-on of about USD 15 to 25 per person each way, so check your voucher before deciding how to reach Halong Bay from Hanoi.
04
How much is the bus from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
A public bus costs roughly 120,000 to 200,000 VND one way, which is about ₹400 to ₹700. A shared limousine van costs about 250,000 to 400,000 VND, and both prices rise on weekends and holidays.
05
Which pier does my Ha Long cruise leave from?
Most Ha Long Bay cruises leave from Tuan Chau International Marina, some upmarket and Bai Tu Long Bay boats use Ha Long International Cruise Port, and Lan Ha Bay cruises use Got Pier. Your booking voucher names the pier.
06
Can I go from Ha Long Bay straight to Hanoi airport?
Yes, you can. Many cruise shuttles and limousine vans drop at Noi Bai Airport for a small surcharge, and a private car takes two and a half to three hours, so book an evening flight on the day you disembark.
07
Is there a train from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
There is a rail line, but it is not a practical way to reach the bay. The service is slow and infrequent and ends well away from the cruise piers.
08
What is a limousine bus in Vietnam?
A limousine bus in Vietnam is a converted minivan with 9 to 11 reclining seats, not a stretch car. It offers more legroom than a standard coach and usually includes hotel pickup in the Old Quarter.
09
Should I stay overnight in Ha Long City?
Usually not, because a morning transfer from Hanoi reaches the piers in time for a standard noon check-in. A night in Bai Chay makes sense if your boat boards early or you want extra time around the bay.
10
What time should I leave Hanoi for a cruise check-in?
Leave Hanoi by about 8 am for a check-in between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. That allows for the drive, the Old Quarter pickups and the rest stop, with a buffer for traffic leaving the city.
11
Is the seaplane to Ha Long Bay worth it?
It is worth it as a special-occasion splurge rather than as practical transport. The aerial view of the karsts is remarkable, but the fare is many times the road transfer and flights are cancelled in poor visibility.
