What is Sung Sot Cave in Halong Bay?
The word Sung Sot literally means “Surprise”, so it also goes by the name Surprise Cave, which is what you will be, once you witness one of the most beautiful caves in Vietnam, with your own eyes.
The name is inspired by its unique structure, with a narrow and small entrance but as you move forward, the cave turns into a magnificent chamber adorned with beautiful stalactites formations, which are not just a treat to the eyes but also resembles horses, swords and what not. So, now you understand why it’s called Surprise Cave Halong Bay.
Sung Sot Cave, located on the Bo Hon Island in Halong Bay was first discovered by the French explorers in the year 1901, and welcomed its first tourist in 1993. It eventually became a popular sightseeing stop on the Halong Bay Cruise.
What Can You See Inside The Cave?
You must be wondering that if the cave is so popular, what can one expect to see inside. Well, let’s walk you through it:
The First Chamber & the Rock Formations
The First Chamber, also known as the waiting room, has a 30 meter high dome ceiling, which is quite fascinating. The cavern walls and the entire floor of the cave features some of the most beautiful limestone figures, which resembles elephants, seal figures, etc. The stalactites hang down from the ceiling, like nature’s very own chandelier.
The Inner Chamber
Even though the First Chamber’s corridor entrance is quite narrow, it is connected to the Second Chamber, which is as massive as it gets. The Second or the Inner Chamber features rock masses that are believed to be shaped like Thanh Giong’s horse. Thanh Giong was a mythical hero, who was believed to have flown towards the sky after defeating the Chinese Invaders. Sound’s interesting, right?
The Walking Path
To be honest, the entrance of the cave rests a little higher than the sea level, which is approximately 25 meters above, so you can imagine getting to the cave may require you to climb at least 100 stone steps. Once you are inside the cave, you will follow an 800 meter paved walkway, which is fully equipped with security railings. So you see, it’s not that hard.
LED Lightings
The interior of the cave is beautiful, but it looks even more beautiful because it is fitted with colourful lights that have been very strategically placed, so as to accentuate the overall texture of the stalactites. Besides that, there are low level street lamps as well that provide a warm aesthetic look to flex on your Instagram feed.
Where is Sung Sot Cave Located?
The Sung Sot Cave Halong Bay is located on the Bo Hon Island of Quang Ning province in Vietnam. The distance of the cave from ports like Tuan Chau and Bai Chay is approximately 14 km.
As mentioned earlier, the cave is located some 25 meters above sea level, so you need to climb some 100 Sung Sot cave steps to reach the entrance.
The next important question is that once you are there in Vietnam, how exactly can you reach the cave, how to book the tickets and what are the timings. Let’s discuss all of it one by one:
Sung Sot Cave Tickets
Entrance Fees: ₹1100 approximately
You can take the tickets from Ha Long: the Tuan Chau International Passenger Port or the Halong International Passenger Ports.
The cave is one of the top Halong Bay cruise stops because of its increasing popularity, and is most of the time, included in the total cost of the cruise. It is advisable that before you take that cruise, you should always check the itinerary, if the Sung Sot Cave is a part of it or not.
Sung Sot Cave Boat Tickets
Boat Tickets: ₹735 approximately
Opt for a boat based excursion, which is quite an experience. You can easily rent a boat through the Ha Long Bay Management Board’s coordinators, the travel agency that booked your Vietnam trip(if it’s not a self planned trip) or you can rent it directly from the boat owner.
It is advisable to avoid renting directly from the owner, as tourists may get scammed into paying more than what they usually charge.
Best Time To Visit Sung Sot Cave
May to July & December to February
The months between May to July and December to February are the most ideal time to visit the Sung Sot Cave, and if you wish to avoid crowds, it’s advisable to visit either between 8-9 in the morning or 4-5 in the evening.
The smartest move is to visit on weekdays, when you can explore the place in peace because it's not overcrowded then, as compared to the weekends.
How Long Does It Take To Explore the Sung Sot Cave?
It typically takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes but most people stop to take pictures, so it usually takes more time than that. Afterall, if you are visiting a place that looks like a little piece of heaven itself, you are allowed to take as many clicks as you want.
What To Bring To The Cave?
There are few things that you should take care of, before you visit the cave:
Walking Shoes: You should carry or wear comfortable walking shoes, because you will be climbing stone steps and if you wear anything besides comfortable shoes, the experience will not be as perfect as you want it to be.
Light Clothes: When you are inside the cave, it gets humid, so it's better if you wear light breathable clothes.
Flashlight: Even though the cave is fitted with LED lighting, to explore the darker corners, you are going to need a flashlight.
Water and snacks: It’s important to stay hydrated, so ensure that you carry snacks and water along with you.
