How to reach Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh: Best Ways to Travel by Flight & Train

Enquire Now

Travelling from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi means crossing almost the entire length of Vietnam. If heading north afterwards, knowing how to reach Hanoi from Sapa can also help with route planning.
For most travellers, the answer is simple: fly. Given the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh distance, a direct flight of around 2 hours is far more practical than spending roughly 33–38 hours on the train.
If you are planning a longer north-to-south trip through Vietnam tour packages, flying between the two cities can also help you save valuable travel time for places such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.
There is also a long-distance bus, but the Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi travel time by road can exceed a day, making it difficult to recommend over flying.

The actual Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi distance depends on how it is measured. The cities are roughly 1,140 km apart in a straight line, around 1,600 km by common road routes and 1,726 km apart on the North-South railway.
Flights operate between Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) and Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). If Vietnam is your first trip to the country, our Vietnam airports guide explains the main airports and which destinations they serve.
Travellers still planning the international leg can also compare routes in our India to Vietnam flights guide.

By Flight: The Default Choice

Embedded media
A Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi flight is easily the most practical way to cover this leg.
Non-stop flights generally take a little over 2 hours, turning a journey that occupies more than a day by land into a short domestic hop. Multiple departures are available throughout the day, giving travellers considerably more flexibility than rail.
Vietnam Airlines and VietJet are among the main carriers operating a Hanoi to Saigon flight as well as services on the SGN–HAN route.

Cheapest Flight Saigon to Hanoi

As checked on 14 September 2026, VietJet Air is generally the cheapest flight from Saigon to Hanoi (SGN–HAN). Current fare listings show one-way VietJet tickets from around 813,000 VND for selected September dates. Vietnam Airlines’ official site is showing fares from about 888,181 VND, while its India site lists selected upcoming one-way economy fares from ₹4,078

How Much Does a Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi Flight Cost?

There is no single useful fixed fare because pricing changes quickly.
As checked in September 2026, Vietnam Airlines was advertising selected one-way economy fares from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi at around ₹4,049. VietJet was listing promotional base fares from about 348,000–509,000 VND (roughly ₹1,300–₹1,900), making flying a practical option when planning how to reach Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh.
For planning purposes, expect budget fares to start low during promotions but compare the final checkout price, not just the headline fare. Checked baggage, seat selection and other extras can narrow the gap between a low-cost carrier and a full-service airline.

Check Your Terminal at Tan Son Nhat

This matters more than it used to.
At Tan Son Nhat Airport, VietJet currently operates domestic flights from Terminal 1, while Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines and several other domestic carriers operate from the newer Terminal 3.
Check your airline and terminal before leaving your hotel rather than automatically asking the driver for the domestic terminal.

A Better Way to Plan Vietnam Flights

For most Vietnam itineraries, there is another useful trick: do not return to the city where you started unless you need to.
For example:
India → Hanoi → central/northern Vietnam → Ho Chi Minh City → India
or the reverse.
Flying into one end of Vietnam and home from the other can remove an unnecessary domestic flight and save both time and airport transfers. When comparing international tickets, price an open-jaw itinerary before booking a simple return ticket.

By Train: The Reunification Express

The Saigon to Hanoi train is not the efficient option. That is also exactly why some travellers choose it.
Vietnam's North-South railway runs for 1,726 km between Saigon and Hanoi, passing places such as Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue, Dong Hoi and Ninh Binh along the way.
Train Saigon Departure Hanoi Arrival Journey Time
SE8 06:00 16:20 next day 34 hr 20 min
SE6 08:45 19:14 next day 34 hr 29 min
SE10 13:15 03:40 two days later 38 hr 25 min
SE4 19:20 04:36 two days later 33 hr 16 min
SE2 20:35 05:42 two days later 33 hr 07 min

Which Train Class Should You Choose?

Vietnam Railways offers several seating and sleeper categories, including soft seats and sleeper compartments with four or six berths.
For the entire Ho Chi Minh City–Hanoi journey, a sleeper is far more realistic than spending over 30 hours in a standard seat when planning how to reach Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh.
Current journey planners put the full rail trip at roughly ₹4,700–₹9,000, depending on the service and accommodation class.
That creates an important point travellers sometimes miss: the train is not necessarily cheaper than flying.
You are choosing it for the journey rather than purely to save money.

The Smarter Way to Do the North-South Train

You do not have to spend 34 hours continuously onboard. For many travellers, the better version of the railway journey is:
Ho Chi Minh City → Da Nang/Hue → Hanoi
You still experience the famous north-south railway, including long stretches of Vietnam's coastline and countryside, without sacrificing nearly two days to one continuous train ride.
Da Nang and Hue are also natural stops rather than artificial breaks created just to escape the train.

Why the Bus Is Not Worth It

Embedded media
Yes, you can travel between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi by bus.
Current journey estimates put the trip at roughly 37 hours, with fares around approximately ₹2,800–₹4,300.
But this is one route where choosing the absolute cheapest ticket rarely creates the best-value journey.
You are spending well over a day on the road to save only a few thousand rupees compared with a flight. That makes it a less practical choice when deciding how to reach Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh, especially if time and comfort matter.
If you want the overland experience, take the train.
If you want efficiency, fly.
The bus occupies an awkward middle ground without offering the main advantage of either.

Fitting the North-South Hop into Your Itinerary

Vietnam works particularly well as a one-way itinerary.
A common north-to-south route is:
Hanoi → Ha Long Bay/Sapa → central Vietnam → Ho Chi Minh City
You can begin with Hanoi and continue into the mountains using our Hanoi to Sapa route, or spend a couple of days around the coast using our Ha Long Bay travel guide.
From there, continue south through destinations such as Hue, Da Nang or Hoi An before finishing in Ho Chi Minh City, which also helps when planning how to reach Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh on the return route.
The same itinerary works perfectly well in reverse.
The simple rule: treat Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as opposite ends of your Vietnam journey, not two cities that require a return trip between them.
