12 Jul 2026We travelled to Srinagar-Leh-Ladakh. A beautiful and overwhelming journey. Our experience was really great with WanderOn. Our virtual guide Eshta supported us with all the queries and helped in our journey.

If you are planning a bike trip to Ladakh, then you must be wondering about the best bikes for Ladakh trip, right? Let us first tell you that you are up for an adventure that is surely going to stay with you for a long time even after the journey ends.
If you want to make the most of your Ladakh Tour Packages, then a bike trip is something that would be a completely different experience. The rush, the thrill and everything in between will just make you fall in love with the place.
However, before you finally take the trip, it is very important to understand the kind of vehicle you need that would not only suit you but would also be suitable for the rough Ladkhi roads.

You should know that the bikes that feel comfortable riding in the city, may not always be a perfect fit for long distance driving or for riding on the roads of Ladakh. The high altitude, changing weather and road conditions make certain features in a bike particularly important. There are easy options to rent bike in Leh.
The route to Ladakh may include loose gravel, uneven surfaces, broken tarmac, rocky patches etc. A bike which has a good ground clearance is less likely to scrape itself while crossing obstacles. Long travel suspension allows the bike to absorb bumps, making rough patches easy to manage. All adventure bikes are designed in a way that they can withstand certain conditions.
When you are riding at a high elevation, the oxygen gradually becomes low, which can lead to the reduction in the power produced by naturally aspirated petrol engines. You’ll notice it if the climb is steep, especially if you are carrying a heavy luggage or another passenger.
Long journeys can be uncomfortable if the vehicle isn’t comfortable enough, whether it's a bike or a car. If you don’t wish to be exhausted, or uneasy, ensure that you take a bike that has enough room for essential luggage, and lets you have a relaxed posture.
You should also enquire about the fuel range because Ladakh routes have very limited petrol pumps, so calculate your fuel needs, and identify refuelling points beforehand.
Good brakes, reliable tyres and access to service support are some of the basic things that one should take care of before departure.

The best bike for Leh Ladakh trip depends on your riding experience, route that you will follow and obviously your budget.
All adventure bikes are designed in a way that they can handle rough stretches, so you can choose what suits you.
An all round choice for the best Ladakh bike trip is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. This bike is specifically built for adventure touring, combining a powerful engine with long travel suspension, comfortable riding set up.
KTM 390 Adventure is a motorcycle built for both highways and rough terrains. The engine delivers strong performance and its ground clearance makes it easy to ride on rough stretches.
If you don’t want a very heavy bike but still want a bike that could ride rough terrains and help you fulfil your adventure needs, then the Hero XPulse 210 is the best option for you. It’s light weight and long travel suspension makes it easier to handle on gravel roads, tighter sections, etc.
Suzuki V-Strom SX is designed primarily for the road-oriented expeditions, especially for riders who would stick to planned established routes, instead of going for an off-roading trail. The bike’s upright riding position, touring friendly design and wind protection, makes long journeys rather comfortable.
Remember, it is not designed for hardcore off-roading expeditions, so choose your route and your itinerary accordingly, if you are going for this bike.
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X has a mix of road performance and an ability to handle occasional rough stretches. The scrambler inspired design makes it quite appealing to the riders. This bike can be a good option if your itinerary is mainly focussed on established roads and some manageable gravel sections.
Who said you can only have the best Ladakh bike trip with an adventure motorcycle? The Royal Enfield Classic 350 allows you to enjoy a Ladakh trip with established roads and no off-roading trails.
If you are choosing this bike, ensure that you inspect the road conditions before departure and don’t think about overloading it while you make the most of your classic 350 Ladakh experience.
Riders who enjoy traditional motorcycling will love Royal Enfield Bullet 350 due to its steady performance and a comfortable riding position, making it suitable for a relaxed journey.
The bullet can handle a well-planned Ladakh trip but it is not designed for technical off-roading and uneven surfaces.

The right motorcycle depends on how you ride, what you can comfortably manage and how much you plan to spend.
Beginners should go for predictable handling, manageable speed and confidence at low speed. Hero XPulse 210 may be perfect for riders who are comfortable with its seat, height and gearing.
If you are an experienced rider, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and the KTM 390 Adventure are the best choice. If you are looking for a bike that is specifically suited for adventure bike trips like that of Leh Ladakh, then this is it.
The Himalayan 450 is among the best options for riders looking for a dedicated touring motorcycle with a suspension that can withstand adventurous roads and a substantial fuel tank.

You can have the best bike in the world but even the best ones can run into trouble if not maintained properly or is overloaded. It’s advisable to have a thorough inspection with a qualified mechanic before you head towards your adventure trip.
Check tyre pressure, tread and the overall condition. Check the brake fluid, wheel bearings, sprockets and suspension. Ensure that you carry a puncture repair kit that matches your tyre type, along with some other basic tools and essential spare tools.
Plan your fuel stops in advance because petrol stations can be far apart on some routes. Estimate your range conservatively, especially when riding with luggage or travelling over steep terrain.
Wear a properly fitted helmet, gloves, riding jacket, protective trousers and sturdy riding boots. Pack waterproof outerwear and warm layers because mountain weather can change quickly.
Carry your driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, insurance and pollution-under-control certificate where applicable. Check current route restrictions and any permits required for your itinerary before departure.
Spend time adjusting to the altitude before attempting demanding rides, increase elevation gradually where possible and avoid rushing into high passes.

9 Jul 2026WanderOn is great for Ladakh trip. Our team captain Ayush and Bharat were amazing. Chaotic hoti baaton pe mene bohot cheda he unko and also because I took them as kids But these kids managed the trip extremely well. Ayush got responsibility and care on the table while Bharat got fun and adventure Both are extremely knowledgeable and fun to hang out with Despite of certain shortcomings in the entire journey I really had fun as the entire group was awesome I absolute didn’t feel like I was travelling with strangers I made a lot of new friends that I am going to treasure for life. The main thing that everyone cribbed about was food, which the only section where WanderOn should work on. Baaki sab badhiya that tha . I would thank WanderOn, Ayush and Bharat for making this dream bike ride comfortable and successful for me. And moreover thanks for the new friends I met on this trip All in all a great trip
Your right to Know!
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is one of the best bikes for a Ladakh trip because of its adventure-ready suspension, ground clearance and touring comfort. The KTM 390 Adventure and Hero XPulse 210 are also worth considering, depending on your budget, riding experience and route.
Yes, the Himalayan is generally better suited to Ladakh's rough roads and uneven terrain than the Classic 350. Its adventure-focused suspension and higher ground clearance make it more capable on challenging stretches, while the Classic 350 is better suited to relaxed rides on established roads.
Yes, you can ride a scooter to Ladakh, but it is generally less suitable for demanding mountain routes than a capable motorcycle. Consider its engine performance, ground clearance, braking, tyre condition and luggage capacity, and avoid rough or remote stretches beyond its capabilities.
Yes, naturally aspirated petrol bikes generally lose engine power at high altitudes because the air contains less oxygen. This can make steep climbs slower, particularly when carrying a passenger or heavy luggage, so use appropriate gears and avoid overloading the motorcycle.
Renting a bike in Leh can be more convenient if you want to avoid a long ride to Ladakh and the associated wear on your motorcycle. Riding your own bike offers familiarity and control over maintenance, but requires careful preparation, route planning and checking any applicable local rental or permit restrictions.
Carry a puncture-repair kit suitable for your tyres, basic tools, spare fuses, a tyre inflator and essential bike-specific spares. A spare clutch cable, chain links or other parts may also be useful depending on your motorcycle, route and access to roadside assistance.
Carburetted bikes can run less efficiently at high altitudes because thinner air changes the air-fuel mixture. This can cause reduced power, rough idling and poor throttle response, although the severity depends on the motorcycle's carburettor setup and tuning.
Your bike should carry only the luggage allowed by its manufacturer’s maximum payload, including the rider and passenger. Pack light, distribute weight evenly and secure bags properly to avoid affecting handling, braking or suspension performance on mountain roads.
Yes, a well-maintained 350cc motorcycle can generally manage the road to Khardung La under suitable conditions. Engine capacity alone does not determine performance, so consider the bike's condition, gearing, load, rider experience and current road and weather conditions.
Carry your valid driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, insurance and a valid pollution-under-control certificate where applicable. Check current Ladakh entry requirements, route restrictions and any permits needed for specific areas before travelling, as requirements may change.
Yes, KTM adventure motorcycles can be comfortable for Ladakh when the rider chooses a suitable model and adjusts the riding setup to their needs. Their performance and suspension can suit mountain touring, but seat comfort, riding posture, luggage weight and the specific model all affect long-distance comfort.
