Renting a motorcycle in Leh is easy. The part that catches people out is the rule that comes with it. If you ride into Ladakh on a bike rented in Manali or Delhi, you can't use it for sightseeing beyond Leh town. So most riders park the outside bike and take a bike on rent in Leh from a local agency, at union-set rates.

Leh bike rental rates and rules were checked on 19 October 2026. Rates are reset each season, so confirm at the shop.

The Ladakh Bike Union Rule, Explained

Leh's rental agencies belong to the Ladakh Bike Co-operative Limited, earlier the Leh Motorcycle Rental Association. It fixes the daily rate for each model, and agencies that undercut it can be fined.

The Ladakh bike union rule is simple. A bike rented outside Ladakh, from Manali, Delhi, Chandigarh or Srinagar, may enter Leh, but it can't be ridden for sightseeing beyond the town. Checkpoints such as North Pullu, on the Khardung La road, and Karu, on the Pangong road, have turned them back.

It is a union rule, not a government order, but treat it as fixed. Local rental bikes carry yellow commercial number plates registered in Ladakh, and those are the bikes allowed on the Nubra, Pangong and Hanle circuits.

Your own bike can travel freely, as long as the RC is in your name or you carry a notarised NOC from the owner along with proof of your relationship.

Where to Rent and How to Book

Most rental shops line Fort Road and Main Bazaar in central Leh, and all quote the same union rate. Walking in works in the shoulder months or if you are flexible on the model: visit two or three shops and take a short test ride before choosing.

In June to August, book ahead. Some online platforms charge more than the walk-in rate, so compare any quote with the union rate card, which registered shops can show you. A genuine local rental has a yellow commercial plate registered in Leh.

Damage, Insurance and Breakdowns

Most Leh rentals carry only the third-party insurance the law requires, which covers harm to others, not the bike or you. Any damage during your rental, from a scratched tank to a bent lever, is yours to pay, usually from the deposit.

  • Get it in writing. Ask for a short agreement that says what the deposit covers and how damage is charged.
  • Ask about a damage waiver. A few larger shops renting premium bikes offer one for an extra daily fee.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers motorcycling and medical evacuation, since the bike's policy won't pay your medical bills.
  • Agree breakdown terms. Ask who pays for recovery if the bike stops in Nubra or at Pangong, and save the shop's number.

The Paperwork

To hire a bike on rent in Leh, you need:

  • A valid two-wheeler driving licence. A learner's licence is not accepted.
  • A government photo ID, such as an Aadhaar card or passport. Some shops keep an ID until you return the bike. Never leave your original licence, since you need it on the road.
  • For foreign riders, an International Driving Permit along with your home licence.

Indian visitors no longer need an Inner Line Permit for Nubra, Pangong or Hanle, but they do pay an Environment and Development Fee. It is about ₹400, plus a ₹20 wildlife fee for each day, paid online at lahdclehpermit.in. Carry a printout for checkposts. Foreign nationals still need a Protected Area Permit.

The Protection Checklist

Embedded media

Before you pay the deposit, photograph the bike from every side with the owner present, then check:

  • Tyres: good tread, no cuts, and the right pressure.
  • Brakes and clutch: firm levers, cables in good shape.
  • Chain: lubricated, with the right slack.
  • Lights, horn and battery: test them all.
  • Papers: the RC, insurance and pollution certificate should be in the bike and in date.
  • Helmet: most shops include one helmet. Ask for a pillion helmet too, and check the fit.

Fuel for Nubra and Pangong

16px vertical gapFill up at one of Leh's two pumps the night before, at about ₹106 a litre in 2026.

  • Nubra: there is a pump at Diskit, about 116 km from Leh. A full tank from Leh and a top-up at Diskit cover a Nubra and Turtuk trip.
  • Pangong: a pump opened at Tangtse in 2023, about 34 km before the lake, so a standard Leh to Pangong and back ride needs no spare fuel.
  • Long circuits: carry spare fuel in a metal jerry can for Pangong to Hanle or Tso Moriri, where pumps are far apart.

WanderOn is great for Ladakh trip. Our team captain Ayush and Bharat were amazing. Chaotic hoti baaton pe mene bohot cheda he unko and also because I took them as kids But these kids managed the trip extremely well. Ayush got responsibility and care on the table while Bharat got fun and adventure Both are extremely knowledgeable and fun to hang out with Despite of certain shortcomings in the entire journey I really had fun as the entire group was awesome I absolute didn’t feel like I was travelling with strangers I made a lot of new friends that I am going to treasure for life. The main thing that everyone cribbed about was food, which the only section where WanderOn should work on. Baaki sab badhiya that tha . I would thank WanderOn, Ayush and Bharat for making this dream bike ride comfortable and successful for me. And moreover thanks for the new friends I met on this trip All in all a great trip
