Ladakh’s festivals are rooted deep in Buddhist spiritual cycles and agricultural seasons. Understanding the festivals helps you decide which one matters to you and what you'll experience during that time.
The Hemis Festival is one of the most popular festivals in Ladakh celebrated at the famous Hemis Monastery. This 2-day festival includes sacred masked dance performances by monks, colourful costumes, sacred rituals, and the display of giant thangka on special occasions. Our Hemis festival Ladakh package offers an opportunity to experience the best of the festival. Losar Festival is another important festival celebrated in Ladakh for around 3-15 days. Losar, meaning "New Year" in Tibetan, is the most significant festival in Tibetan Buddhism, marking the start of the lunisolar calendar. Dosmoche Festival is celebrated annually on the 28th and 29th days of the 12th Tibetan lunar month (usually in mid-February). It marks the end of the Tibetan New Year festivities and is believed to protect the region and people from evil spirits.
Held for around a week every September, the Ladakh Festival was introduced to showcase the region's diverse cultural traditions and extend the tourism season. The celebrations begin with a grand procession through Leh, where locals dressed in traditional attire represent different parts of Ladakh, making it one of the best Ladakh summer festivals The Gustor Festival, held at monasteries like Thiksey and Karsha, celebrates the victory of good over evil. Monks perform cham dances in elaborate masks representing Buddhist protector deities—something genuinely worth seeing in person. The final day ends with burning an effigy, pushing out negativity before a new spiritual cycle begins.
Every spring, the valleys around Kargil turn soft pink and white as the apricot trees come into bloom, and we time our trip to catch the Apricot Blossom Festival Ladakh at its peak. You will wander through orchards in full flower, sit down to traditional Balti meals with local families, and watch folk dancers and musicians bring the season to life.
