Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, has a relaxed charm that becomes more noticeable when you spend time in its town centre. The clock tower square thimphu is one of the city's familiar meeting points, surrounded by shops, restaurants, cafés and hotels. It is a simple place to stop, take photographs and watch the city go about its daily routine.
A traditional clock tower, decorated with colourful Bhutanese designs, sits at the centre. Unlike a major monument that takes hours to explore, this place is easy to fit into a Thimphu itinerary. Travellers exploring our Bhutan Tour Packages can visit the square between sightseeing plans, browse nearby stores, grab something to eat or continue exploring the streets around Norzin Lam.
It is also a useful place to experience a more everyday side of the capital. Travellers come here for photographs and shopping, while locals use the surrounding streets for work, food and regular errands.
Where Is Clock Tower Square Thimphu?
Located in the centre of Thimphu, the square is a familiar meeting point for locals and visitors. It sits along Norzin Lam, one of the main streets in the city. The area around it has shops, restaurants, cafés and other businesses, making it easy to include in a day of sightseeing.
If you are staying in central Thimphu, you may be able to reach the square on foot. Travellers staying farther away can use a taxi or their tour vehicle. You do not need to plan a separate day for this place. It works well as part of a city tour.
The square is a public space, so there is no separate entry ticket for simply visiting it. However, you will need to pay for anything you buy or eat nearby.
History and Architecture of Clock Tower Thimphu
The clock tower is the main feature of the square. It has four clock faces and stands on a decorated structure that reflects Bhutan's traditional artistic style. The tower is painted with colourful designs, including dragons and floral patterns.
The dragons are especially noticeable. They are an important part of Bhutanese culture and are closely connected with the country's identity as the Dragon Kingdom. The painted details give the tower a character that you will not find in an ordinary town clock.
The architecture around the square is equally interesting. Many buildings in central Thimphu feature wooden windows, colourful borders, sloping roofs and traditional decorative patterns. These designs are part of Bhutan's architectural identity and can be seen in both religious and everyday buildings.
At the same time, the area does not feel like an old monument frozen in time. People come here to shop, meet friends, eat and go about their daily routines. Modern businesses operate alongside traditional designs, creating a mix of old and new.
Take a few minutes to walk around the tower instead of looking at it from just one side. You can notice different paintings and details from each direction. The surrounding buildings also make a good background for photographs.
Things to Do at Clock Tower Square Thimphu
A visit to the square does not need a long list of activities. Its appeal comes from the chance to slow down and enjoy the centre of the city. Here are some simple things you can do during your visit.
1. Take Photographs of the Clock Tower
The tower is the most obvious place to begin. Take photographs of the four clock faces, the dragons and the painted wooden details. You can also capture the surrounding buildings to show the traditional character of Thimphu.
Morning light can be useful for photographs, especially if you prefer a quieter setting. During the afternoon, the square may have more movement, which can add life to your pictures.
If you are travelling with friends or family, the tower makes a convenient meeting point before you continue to another attraction.
2. Look at the Traditional Designs
Bhutanese architecture is one of the things that makes Thimphu different from many other capital cities. The square gives you an easy opportunity to notice these details without visiting a museum or monastery.
Look at the wooden frames, painted borders and patterns on the nearby buildings. You may also notice traditional motifs on public structures and other features around the square.
You do not need to know the meaning of every design to appreciate it. Simply paying attention to the details can make a short walk more interesting.
3. Sit and Watch Local Life
The square is a public gathering place, so it offers a chance to observe how people use the centre of the city. Locals may pass through on their way to work, meet friends or spend time in the surrounding area.
You may see visitors taking photographs, people shopping nearby, or families stopping for food. These ordinary moments are part of what makes the square feel like a real part of Thimphu rather than just a tourist attraction.
Spend a little time sitting or standing around the square. You do not have to fill every minute with sightseeing.
4. Explore the Nearby Streets
The streets around the square are worth exploring if you have extra time. Walk along Norzin Lam and look at the businesses, cafés and shops that line the area.
You can combine this with souvenir shopping or a meal. If you are travelling with a group, it is also a convenient place to take a short break before moving on to the next stop.
Keep your plans flexible. Some streets may be busier than others, and the experience can change depending on the time of day.
Shopping Around the Square
Shopping in central Thimphu is a simple way to spend some extra time after sightseeing. The area around the square has a variety of businesses, from everyday stores to shops selling souvenirs and locally inspired products.
You do not need to plan a full shopping expedition to explore this part of the city. Even a short walk can help you find something interesting to take home.
What Can You Buy?
Depending on the shop, you may find clothing, accessories, handicrafts, decorative items and souvenirs. Some stores sell products inspired by Bhutanese culture, while others focus on modern clothing or everyday goods.
If you want to buy something traditional, look for handwoven products, locally designed textiles or small decorative pieces. Ask the shopkeeper about the material and where the item was made if you want a product with a genuine local connection.
Prices can vary between stores, so it is sensible to compare a few options before buying. Not every product sold as a souvenir is necessarily handmade in Bhutan.
Clock Tower Square Shops
The Clock Tower Square shops are useful for picking up small gifts and browsing local products without leaving the city centre. You can look for scarves, bags, traditional designs, jewellery and other items, depending on what is available.
Keep some Bhutanese currency with you for smaller purchases. Payment options may differ between businesses, so do not rely entirely on cards or digital payments.
If you are buying clothing or handicrafts, check the quality before paying. A little time spent comparing products can help you make a more informed purchase.
Food and Cafes Near the Square
One of the advantages of visiting the town centre is the choice of places to eat. You can stop for a quick snack, have a cup of coffee or sit down for a proper meal after sightseeing.
The streets around the square have restaurants and cafés, including places serving local food and other popular cuisines. You can choose something familiar or use the opportunity to try a Bhutanese dish.
Cafes Near Clock Tower Thimphu
Travellers looking for cafes near Clock Tower Thimphu can explore the central streets around Norzin Lam. These cafés are useful when you want a break from walking or need a comfortable place to sit and plan the rest of your day.
Coffee, tea, snacks and light meals are common choices at cafés in the city. Some places may have a simple, relaxed setting, while others are designed more like modern coffee shops.
Before visiting a particular café, check its opening hours. Smaller businesses may have different schedules during holidays or quieter periods.
Bhutanese Food to Try
A trip to Thimphu is a good opportunity to try traditional Bhutanese food. One dish you should look for is ema datshi, a preparation made with chillies and cheese. It is a well-known part of Bhutanese cuisine and can be quite spicy.
Momos are another popular choice. These dumplings are available in different fillings and are commonly enjoyed as a snack or meal.
If you are not used to spicy food, ask the restaurant about the chilli level before ordering. You can also choose rice, noodles or other dishes if you prefer something milder.
The city has restaurants serving Indian, Tibetan and international food as well, so you will have options if you want a change from local dishes.
Enjoy a Thimphu Evening Walk
The centre of Thimphu is a good place to include in a Thimphu evening walk. As the day cools down, you can explore the nearby streets, stop for a snack and enjoy the slower pace of the capital.
Start around the clock tower and walk along Norzin Lam. You can browse shops, look for a café or simply spend time watching people go about their evening.
The area is not known for the kind of large nightlife scene found in major cities. Instead, the evening atmosphere is more relaxed, with restaurants, cafés and some entertainment options.
The best time for a walk depends on the season. During warmer months, early evening can be comfortable for exploring. In winter, temperatures may drop quickly after sunset, so carry a warm layer.
Comfortable shoes are useful if you plan to walk beyond the square. The surrounding streets can be more enjoyable when you are not rushing to get somewhere else.
Events and Cultural Activities
The square is also used for public gatherings and special activities. Depending on the occasion, you may find performances, concerts, ceremonies or community events taking place in the area.
Clock Tower Square Events

If you want to attend an event during your Bhutan trip, check local tourism information or ask your hotel or tour guide about upcoming activities. There is no guarantee that a performance will be taking place on the day you visit.
When an event is scheduled, the square may become busier than usual. Arriving early can help if you want a clear view of the activity.
Even without an event, the square remains a useful place to visit. Its architecture, shops and everyday atmosphere make it worth including in a Thimphu itinerary.

My trip to Bhutan with WanderOn was an unforgettable adventure, packed with everything from stunning mountain landscapes to a literal 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Thimphu!. A huge shoutout to our trip captain ABHIJAY👏, who was incredibly proactive, present, and helpful the entire time. He stayed right with the group during the tough stretches of the trek, ensuring everyone made it back safely down the mountain. His supportive attitude made a massive difference."

This was my third trip with WanderOn, this time to Bhutan in June 2026, and I can confidently say I’ve seen a remarkable upgrade since my first trip with them in December 2023.
The two biggest reasons I keep choosing WanderOn are women’s safety and their seamless trip coordination. They’ve built such trust that even my parents now ask, “Why aren’t you booking with WanderOn instead of other vendors?” That’s the kind of confidence and impact they’ve created over the years.
Yes, they may be slightly premium compared to others, but the experience makes it worth every penny. One thing they never compromise on is the quality of stays. All our accommodations in Bhutan were comfortable, beautiful, and well chosen. The food included in the package was decent, the local guides were amazing, and the itinerary was thoughtfully planned.
There was a minor delay on Day 1 due to flight delays, and the team tried their best to accommodate everyone, which eventually led to a delayed border crossing from Jaigaon to Phuentsholing. However, these things can happen while managing a large group, and it was handled professionally.
A special mention to our Trip Captain, Abhijay (Avi). Calm, composed, energetic, professional, and incredibly humble—he truly made the trip memorable. It was my birthday during the trip, and I hadn’t mentioned it because I usually don’t celebrate birthdays. But Avi and my fellow travellers changed that for me and made the day feel special. Thank you for that memory.
The only disappointment of the trip was the last night’s stay and the vehicle arranged for our drop back to Siliguri. The journey felt quite congested and suffocating, and honestly, it didn’t do justice to the price paid or to the otherwise excellent experience.
Overall, this was another wonderful journey with WanderOn, and despite a few shortcomings at the end, I returned with beautiful memories, new friendships, and yet another reason to travel with them again.
