Heading to Bhutan from India? The Bhutan visa process(say entry permit here) is much less complicated than most Indian travellers expect, but there are still a few entry formalities worth sorting out before you go. Indian travellers don't need a traditional tourist visa to enter Bhutan. What you need instead is a Bhutan entry permit, which you can apply for online before the trip or get at an authorised point of entry. Most international travellers, on the other hand, need a Bhutan e-Visa before they arrive. Indian tourists also have a separate SDF rate of INR 1,200 per person per night, compared with the standard SDF of US$100 per person per night for adults from most other countries.
Another important 2026 update is the 24-hour SDF waiver for certain border towns. From 2nd June 2026, tourists visiting Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrupjongkhar for up to 24 hours can receive an SDF waiver, subject to the designated-zone conditions. The waiver is scheduled to remain in force until August 2027.

No. The Bhutan visa for Indians is not the same as the tourist visa required by most international visitors.
Indian nationals need a Bhutan entry permit instead of a conventional tourist visa. You can apply for the permit before travelling or apply at the point of entry. Bhutan tourism recommends arranging the permit in advance, as applying at the border or airport can involve a long wait during busy periods.
There is also no separate tourist visa application fee for Indian nationals. Your main mandatory tourism-related government charge is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).
The Bhutan visa process for Indians is fairly simple because you are applying for an entry permit rather than a conventional visa.
First, keep your Indian passport or Voter ID ready. If you are travelling with children, check their documents before leaving India.
If you hold a passport, ensure it meets Bhutan's six-month validity requirement.
You can apply for your permit online before travelling. Bhutan Tourism also allows a tour operator or hotel to apply on your behalf.
This is the option we would recommend for most travellers. There is little point in reaching the border only to stand in a queue to complete paperwork that you could have handled beforehand.
Your SDF needs to be paid when you apply for the permit, whether you apply online or in person.
For Indian adults, the current SDF is Nu. 1,200 or the equivalent amount in Indian rupees per person per night. Children aged 6 to under 12 pay Nu./INR 600 per night, while children below six do not pay the SDF.
Once your application is processed, you can use the permit to enter Bhutan through an approved point of entry.
If you're flying, immigration formalities will be completed at Paro International Airport (PBH). If you're travelling by road, you can complete the process at an authorised land entry point.
The Bhutan entry permit online option is the easiest choice if you want to have your paperwork ready before travelling.
Bhutan Tourism allows Indian visitors to apply for the permit before travelling. If you're booking through a certified tour operator or staying at a hotel that provides this service, they can also apply on your behalf.
The online process requires you to provide your travel details and the required identification documents. Your SDF is also paid as part of the process.
One important difference is that Indian visitors do not pay the US$40 visa application fee applicable to most other international tourists. Bhutan Tourism specifically states that no fees are payable in advance for the Indian permit itself, while the SDF is payable when applying for the permit.
This is probably the most confusing part of planning a Bhutan trip.
The Bhutan visa cost for Indian travellers isn't a traditional visa fee because Indian nationals don't require a tourist visa. Instead, you need to account for the SDF.

For example, an adult Indian traveller staying in Bhutan for five nights would pay INR 6,000 in SDF.
For seven nights, the SDF would be INR 8,400 per adult.
The SDF is separate from your hotel, meals, flights, transportation and sightseeing expenses.
So when someone searches for the visa cost for Bhutan, they should not assume that the Indian traveller has to pay the US$40 tourist visa fee. That fee applies to the visa application for visitors who require a visa.
The Bhutan permit for Indian tourists is required whether you enter by air or land. For an adult Indian traveller, the basic documents are:
The Department of Immigration also lists a birth certificate for children below 18 among the documents that may be required. Carry the original documents with you. Don't rely only on photographs or photocopies stored on your phone.
If you apply online, Bhutan Tourism says applications can take up to five working days to process when the application has been correctly completed.
So don't leave your application until the day before your trip. Ideally, complete your Bhutan permit several days before departure. This gives you some breathing room if there is a problem with your documents or application.
No, travel insurance is not mandatory for Indian tourists visiting Bhutan. Bhutan Tourism removed the mandatory travel insurance requirement on 23 April 2024.
However, travel insurance is still recommended, especially if your trip includes trekking, adventure activities, remote areas, or multiple domestic connections. A suitable policy can help cover unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, baggage issues, or delays during your Bhutan trip.

The US$40 Bhutan visa fee is a one-time, non-refundable application fee. The SDF is separate and is calculated according to the number of nights spent in Bhutan.
So, for example, an adult international traveller staying for 5 nights would pay: US$40 visa fee + US$500 SDF = US$540 in government charges, before accounting for flights, accommodation, transport, meals and other trip expenses.

Thank you for that memory. The only disappointment of the trip was the last night’s stay and the vehicle arranged for our drop back to Siliguri. The journey felt quite congested and suffocating, and honestly, it didn’t do justice to the price paid or to the otherwise excellent experience. No visa needed if you're Indian. What you do need is a Bhutan Entry Permit. Carry your original Indian passport or Voter ID, and factor in the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), it's mandatory.
Indians skip the visa process entirely. The real process is getting your Entry Permit sorted, valid ID submitted, and the Sustainable Development Fee paid before or on entry.
No visa, no visa fee, for Indian citizens anyway. The cost you'll actually pay is the Sustainable Development Fee, charged per person for every night you're in Bhutan.
Not quite, and it varies by nationality. Indians enter visa-free with just an Entry Permit. Bangladesh and Maldives citizens have their own arrangement, while most other nationalities need visa clearance arranged beforehand.
Depends entirely on your passport. Indians need an Entry Permit and valid identification, nothing more. Other foreign travellers are looking at a passport, visa clearance, fees, the Sustainable Development Fee, and additional paperwork.
Bhutan lets Indians in without a visa, full stop. You'll need the Entry Permit and your Indian passport or original Voter ID with you. The Sustainable Development Fee runs for the duration of your stay.
