- Frozen Landscapes You Won't See Anywhere Else: Spiti tourism in winter is a different travel experience altogether. Temperatures crashing to -25°C, the Spiti River freezes over completely.
Langza and Komic sit under the snow, and waterfalls turn into these surreal ice sculptures you can walk right up to. Less than 5% of people who visit Spiti each year actually see it like this with the right Spiti adventure tour packages. - Rare Snow Leopard Sightings in Kibber: Our Spiti snow tour package takes you on guided treks through Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the few places on earth where snow leopards actually roam in real numbers. It's not a guarantee, but the odds here are better than almost anywhere else in the world.
- Authentic Cultural Immersion with Spitian Families: A Spiti winter trip is when the valley actually opens up to you - sitting around a bukhari stove with butter tea in hand, sleeping in mud-brick homes that have stood for generations.
If your timing's right, you might get to witness Losar (Tibetan New Year) celebrations, Halda Festival and Dechhang Festival. The properties in our network in Langza and Hikkim have hosted our travelers for many winters now, so you're walking into like a family. - World-Class Astrophotography Under Clear Skies: Winter's dry, high-altitude air makes Spiti one of India's top astrophotography spots as the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Our captains know exactly which viewpoints offer the safest, clearest shots after sunset.
- Solitude at Iconic Monasteries and Passes: Visit the 1,000-year-old Key Monastery, Tabo, and Dhankar without any peak summer crowds. Having operated winter departures since 2017, WanderOn knows which roads stay open and which routes are safest after fresh snowfall.

Why This Route Is the Only Winter-Safe Option
The Manali side shuts down by mid-October - Kunzum Pass gets buried under snow and that's the end of that route till May. So in winter, we take everyone in through the Shimla–Kinnaur highway (NH-5). It stays open year-round because the BRO works overtime clearing snow, and the lower-altitude entry makes it far safer for acclimatization too. What to Expect on This Route
Some days you'll be in the car for 9-10 hours, with snow on the road piling up to two feet, BSNL or Jio as your only lifeline, and nights dropping to -15°C, sometimes -25°C. It sounds brutal on paper, but our 4x4 Innovas and tip captains who've spent years driving these roads in winter make even fresh snowfall manageable.
1. Layer Up with the Right Cold Gear: Skip the cotton as it'll betray you the moment you start sweating, and at -25°C, that's a fast track to misery. Stick with thermal base layers, a solid down jacket for -20°C, a fleece, waterproof gloves, and proper snow boots.
2. Protect Your Eyes & Skin from Snow Glare People underestimate how brutal the sun gets above 4,000m - snow throws UV straight back at your face, and a few hours of that is enough to give you snow blindness. Use sunglasses (proper UV ones), put on SPF 50+ even when it's cloudy, and keep a lip balm handy.
3. Acclimatize Properly to Prevent AMS: Don't rush the altitude and give yourself a full day in Kalpa (2,960m) to let your body adjust before climbing higher. Drink 3-4 litres of water, skip the alcohol, and talk to your doctor about Diamox before you start your trip. Every WanderOn trip carries oxygen and pulse oximeters, just in case.
4. Carry Winter-Specific Medications Build a small medicine pouch before you leave - Diamox for altitude, Dolo 650 for fever, ORS sachets for hydration, cough syrup, and motion sickness tablets for the winding roads. Throw in some frostbite cream and a tub of Vaseline too; your skin takes a beating at -25°C. Our captains carry full first-aid kits on every trip, but you'll want your own basics within reach.
5. Protect Your Camera & Gadgets from Cold: Cold absolutely wrecks camera batteries- you'll watch a full charge drop to nothing in 20 minutes if you're not careful.
Keep your spares tucked inside your jacket, carry lens wipes because condensation is constant when you move between cold outdoors and warm homestays, and throw a few silica gel packs into your camera bag to soak up moisture.
6. Plan Photography Around Light & Weather: Golden hour at Key Monastery and Langza is unreal — soft light, zero crowds. For astrophotography, head out between 1-3 AM when the sky's at its clearest. Our captains have done this enough winters to know exactly where to take you.
7. Stay Connected with the Right SIM: Once you cross Reckong Peo, your phone basically becomes a camera - only BSNL and Jio postpaid SIMs hold a signal out there, and even those are patchy. Download Google Maps offline before you leave, save a few emergency numbers, and let your family know your rough itinerary. WanderOn's on-ground team is reachable 24/7, so you're never really cut off.
8. Pack Smart Essentials for Long Drives Carry a reusable water bottle, some dry snacks, a power bank, hand warmers, and wet wipes into your day bag - you'll reach for all of it. Drives stretch 8-10 hours on snow-packed roads, and the small comforts are what keep you sane when the cold sets in and the next chai stop feels far away.
