Ask anyone who has done the Manali–Leh road twice, and they'll tell you that the smartest night of the trip is the one spent in Keylong city. At 3,080 meters, it sits at exactly the altitude your body wants before Leh, so sleeping here gives you a genuine head start against altitude sickness. The three-hour drive through the Atal Tunnel from Keylong to Manali allows you to arrive with half a day to spare.
The places to visit in Keylong city: Kardang Monastery across the river, Shashur above the town, the Chandra-Bhaga confluence at Tandi, and a small market where seabuckthorn turns up in everything from jam to juice.
This is also your last dependable ATM, fuel stop, and phone network before Ladakh, so the town earns its keep twice over. Below, we cover how to reach Keylong, where to stay, and where it fits in our Spiti Valley tour packages.

Is Keylong in Spiti Valley?

No, Keylong city is not in Spiti Valley. Keylong lies in Lahaul Valley and serves as the administrative headquarters of the combined Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Kaza, not Keylong, is the main administrative and tourism centre of Spiti Valley.
The confusion happens because both valleys form one district called Lahaul and Spiti, even though they are geographically distinct. Kunzum Pass separates Spiti from Lahaul, with Keylong lying on the Lahaul side.
  • Keylong city: Lahaul Valley; district headquarters.
  • Kaza: Spiti Valley; the main base for exploring Spiti.
  • Keylong to Spiti: Travellers generally proceed towards Kaza via the Gramphu–Kunzum Pass route when the high-altitude road is open.
  • How to reach Keylong: The most common approach is from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. HPTDC lists Keylong to Manali at 72 Km and 42 km from the Atal Tunnel, with approximate driving times of 2.5 hours and 1.5 hours respectively.
  • Keylong weather: Keylong sits high in the Himalayas, so winters are brutally cold (often dropping below freezing) with heavy snow blanketing the region from November to March. Summer is short and mild, making May to September the best months to visit when skies are clear and temperatures are actually comfortable for trekking.
So, if your itinerary mentions Keylong to Spiti, remember that you are travelling from Lahaul Valley into Spiti Valley, not between two places within Spiti.

How to Reach Keylong

The easiest answer to how to reach Keylong City is by road through Manali and the Atal Tunnel. Keylong has no railway station or commercial airport of its own, so most travellers combine a flight, train or long-distance bus with the final road journey into Lahaul Valley.
The district administration lists Bhuntar as the nearest airport and Jogindernagar, Shimla, and Chandigarh among the nearest railheads.

How to Reach Keylong from Manali

  • Route: Manali → Solang Valley → Atal Tunnel → Sissu → Tandi → Keylong city.
  • Distance: Around 70 km via the Atal Tunnel.
  • Travel time: Approximately 2.5 hours in normal road conditions. HPTDC also places Keylong about 42 km from the Atal Tunnel.
  • By bus: HRTC operates services connecting the Lahaul region with Manali; check the official HRTC portal or Keylong bus stand for the latest departure because mountain schedules can change with road and weather conditions.
  • By taxi: Private taxis are readily available from Manali and are the more flexible choice if you want stops at Sissu or along the Chandra-Bhaga landscape.
  • WanderOn tip: The Atal Tunnel is now the practical route into Lahaul; do not follow older guides that treat Rohtang Pass as the standard approach to Keylong City.

How to Reach Keylong from Delhi or Chandigarh

  • From Chandigarh: The most practical road route is Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali → Atal Tunnel → Keylong.
  • HPTDC lists Chandigarh to Keylong at about 370 km and 11.5 hours under normal conditions.
  • From Delhi: Travel towards Chandigarh/Mandi and continue through Kullu and Manali before entering Lahaul via the Atal Tunnel.
  • Bus option: Interstate buses connect Delhi and Chandigarh with Himachal, while onward HRTC services can be used for Manali/Keylong. Himachal Tourism confirms interstate bus connectivity from both Delhi and Chandigarh.
  • For a smoother Keylong itinerary, an overnight Delhi–Manali journey, followed by the shorter Manali–Keylong leg, is usually easier than treating the entire route as one continuous mountain drive.

How to Reach Keylong from Leh

  • Route: Leh → Upshi → Tanglang La → More Plains → Sarchu → Baralacha La → Darcha → Jispa → Keylong city.
  • Keylong City lies directly on the historic Manali–Leh highway.
  • Season: This route is highly seasonal. The Leh district administration states that the Manali–Leh highway generally operates from around May/June to September/October, depending on snow and road conditions.
  • Bus/taxi: Seasonal bus services and private taxis operate on the Manali–Leh corridor when the highway is open.
  • Current-road caution: Always check the district road-status page before leaving. As of its latest August 2026 update, Keylong–Leh is open, but this status can change quickly after snowfall, landslides or maintenance closures.

Places to Visit in Keylong

The best places to visit in Keylong are close enough to cover in a relaxed day or two. The main Keylong tourist places include Buddhist monasteries, the Chandra-Bhaga confluence at Tandi, and the town’s compact market area.
Kardang Monastery
Kardang Monastery is about 5 km from Keylong and is one of Lahaul’s most important Buddhist monasteries. Once the capital village of Lahaul, Kardang houses a major collection of Kangyur and Tangyur scriptures, murals, and religious artefacts. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes by road, depending on conditions.
Best time: Visit in the morning, when the light falls better across the Bhaga Valley and road visibility is generally clearer.

Shashur Monastery

Shashur Monastery lies only a few kilometres from Keylong, making it one of the easiest monastery visits from town. Surrounded by blue pine, it belongs to the Drukpa tradition and is especially known for its large thangka paintings and annual Chham masked dances. Plan about 15–20 minutes by road from Keylong.
Best time: Go before noon; the forested approach and monastery surroundings are easier to enjoy before afternoon clouds build up.

Tayul Monastery

Tayul Monastery is around 6 km from Keylong and sits above Satingri village. The monastery is noted for its approximately 12-foot statue of Padmasambhava, Kangyur collection, and historic murals. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes by road, followed by a short approach depending on where your vehicle stops.
Best time: Keep it for the first half of the day, especially because the final approach may involve a short walk and high-altitude sun can feel stronger later.

Tandi Sangam

Tandi Sangam is about 7–8 km from Keylong city and marks the meeting point of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers, which together form the Chandrabhaga or Chenab. It is one of the most scenic Keylong tourist places and takes roughly 15–20 minutes by road from town.
Best time: Visit in the late afternoon, when the Chandra and Bhaga river channels are easier to distinguish in softer light.

Keylong Market

Keylong Market is in the centre of town, so most travellers can explore it on foot from their hotel. The Keylong market is the valley’s main commercial hub, with Tibetan shops and outlets selling woollens, Kullu shawls, local handicrafts, silver jewellery, kala zeera and seabuckthorn products. Allow 30–60 minutes for a relaxed visit.
Best time: Visit between late morning and early evening, when more local shops are open and the market feels most active.

Things to Do Around Keylong

Keylong works best as a base rather than just an overnight halt. Several of Lahaul’s most rewarding places sit within a few hours of town, making it possible to explore river valleys, monasteries, villages, and high-altitude passes without changing hotels every night.

Visit Sissu

  • Distance from Keylong: About 30 km
  • Best for: Waterfall views, Chandra Valley scenery and a relaxed half-day trip.
  • Sissu lies along the Chandra River and is one of the easiest places to explore around Keylong. Its green valley setting makes a sharp contrast to the drier landscapes further north.
  • Practical tip: Combine Sissu with Gondhla and Tandi instead of making a separate return drive.

Spend Time in Jispa

  • Distance from Keylong: About 22 km
  • Best for: Riverside walks, photography and slower travel.
  • Jispa sits beside the Bhaga River and is known for its unusually broad, dry riverbed. The district tourism page identifies it as one of the key settlements north of Keylong on the Leh route.
  • Practical tip: Jispa is a good short acclimatisation stop before travelling towards Darcha, Baralacha La or Leh.

Visit Trilokinath Temple

  • Distance from Keylong: About 45 km
  • Best for: culture, pilgrimage, and understanding Lahaul’s Hindu-Buddhist traditions.
  • Trilokinath is unusual because the shrine is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists—as Shiva by Hindu devotees and Avalokiteshvara by Buddhists.
  • Practical tip: Pair Trilokinath with Udaipur on the same day rather than visiting them separately.

Explore Udaipur, Lahaul

  • Distance from Keylong: About 53 km
  • Best for: Temples, greener landscapes and a full-day cultural excursion.
  • Udaipur sits at the meeting of the Miyar stream and Chandrabhaga River and is noticeably greener than upper Lahaul. It is best known for Mrikula Devi Temple and nearby Trilokinath.

Drive to Suraj Tal

  • Best for: High-altitude scenery and road-trip photography.
  • Suraj Tal lies just below Baralacha La, close to 16,000 ft, and is considered the source area of the Bhaga River. The district tourism authority notes that there are no shops or dhabas around the lake.
  • Practical tip: Carry water, snacks and warm layers even in summer, and do not plan this as your first high-altitude stop after arriving in Keylong.

Continue to Baralacha La

  • Best for: Dramatic mountain landscapes and the Manali–Leh road experience.
  • Baralacha La is one of the major high passes north of Keylong and forms part of the route towards Ladakh.
  • Seasonal warning: Treat Baralacha La as a seasonal excursion only. The Keylong–Leh road is currently open as of the district administration’s August 2026 update, but conditions can change rapidly after snowfall or landslides.
  • Practical tip: Check the official Lahaul & Spiti road-status page on the morning of departure.

Why Stay a Full Day in Keylong?

A full day in Keylong gives you much more flexibility than using it only as a night stop. Spend one day exploring Sissu, Tandi, and nearby monasteries, or use Keylong as the starting point for longer outings towards Jispa, Udaipur, Suraj Tal, and Baralacha La. This makes Keylong one of the most practical bases for exploring Lahaul Valley without repeatedly packing and changing accommodation

Best Time to Visit Keylong

The best time to visit Keylong is from June to September, when roads are more reliable and daytime temperatures are relatively comfortable for sightseeing. Summer temperatures generally stay around 5°C to 17°C, while September brings clearer skies and colder nights.
Winter travel has changed significantly after the opening of the Atal Tunnel, which allows access to Keylong without crossing snowbound Rohtang Pass. However, winter access is not guaranteed every day, as snowfall, black ice and temporary road closures can still affect travel.
  • June–August: Best for sightseeing and road trips
  • September: Best for photography and fewer crowds
  • October–May: Cold, with possible snow and road disruptions
The Keylong–Kaza route via Kunzum Pass remains seasonal, so always check the official Lahaul-Spiti road status before travelling.

Plan your Trip to Spiti with Keylong

Keylong is often treated as a night halt between Manali, Leh and Spiti, but it deserves more time than that. With monasteries, river valleys, nearby villages, easy access to Jispa and Udaipur, and improved connectivity through the Atal Tunnel, Keylong works well as a base for exploring Lahaul at a slower pace.
If your route allows it, spend at least a full day here instead of simply passing through. The real appeal of Keylong lies in its quieter landscapes, local culture and its position at the centre of some of Lahaul’s most rewarding drives. For travellers planning a deeper Himala
