Getting from Chandigarh to Spiti Valley - Routes, Distance, and What to Expect

Since Spiti Valley has no airport or railway station of its own, Chandigarh works as the most practical launchpad for most travelers booking a Spiti Valley tour package from Chandigarh—it has its own airport and railway station, with the road being the only way to cover the final, most scenic stretch into the mountains.

By Road (Most Popular Option)

Road travel is the only way to actually reach Spiti, regardless of how you arrive in Chandigarh, and it's the backbone of every Chandigarh-to-Spiti Valley tour package. It takes about 12-14 hours (around 2 day drive) to reach Spiti.

  • Self-drive/private taxi: A high-clearance SUV is recommended. The Shimla-Kinnaur route (NH-5 & NH-505) covers ~500–520 km and is the better choice for first-timers, while the Manali route (~450 km, open June–October only) is shorter but steeper.
  • HRTC buses: Regular Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses run from Chandigarh ISBT toward Shimla and Reckong Peo, with onward connections to Kaza. The Shimla–Kaza bus typically departs early morning and takes the better part of a day to reach Kaza. Fares are budget-friendly (roughly ₹500–800 for the Chandigarh-Shimla leg), though comfort levels vary between ordinary and Volvo/deluxe services.
  • Volvo/private coaches: Comfortable overnight options are available from Chandigarh to Shimla or Manali, useful if you want to save a travel day.

Most of our Lahaul Spiti tour packages from Chandigarh use a private vehicle for the entire circuit, since shared transport on Himalayan roads can be unpredictable and time-consuming.

By Train

Spiti Valley itself has no railhead, but Chandigarh's well-connected railway station makes the city a strong starting point if you're arriving by train:

  • Chandigarh Railway Station has regular broad-gauge connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and most major Indian cities—making it one of the better rail gateways to the region.
  • Kalka Railway Station (about 115 km from Shimla) connects onward via the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train, a scenic narrow-gauge heritage route—worth considering if you'd like to add a unique experience to the start of your trip to Spiti Valley from Chandigarh.
  • From either station, the rest of the journey (Chandigarh/Shimla to Kaza) has to be completed by road, since no rail line extends into the Spiti region.

If you're flying into Delhi instead, the same logic applies: take a train or flight to Chandigarh first, then continue by road.

By Air

Spiti Valley has no functioning airport, so flying gets you only partway:

  • Chandigarh Airport is the most reliable and major air entry point for a Spiti Valley tour from Chandigarh, with consistent domestic connectivity from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major cities via IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet.
  • Bhuntar Airport (Kullu, also called Kullu-Manali Airport) is technically the closest airport to Kaza (around 245–250 km), but its small runway means frequent weather-related cancellations, especially in winter—not ideal for a fixed itinerary.
  • From Chandigarh Airport, you'll continue the journey by road via Shimla-Kinnaur or Manali, just as you would from the railway station or bus stand.

WanderOn’s recommendation: For a dependable, well-planned Spiti Valley tour package from Chandigarh, flying or training into Chandigarh and continuing by road via Shimla-Kinnaur is the most reliable combination—it avoids the weather risk of smaller airports and lets you acclimatize gradually as you ascend into the high-altitude desert.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What should I pack for a Spiti Valley trip from Chandigarh?

Carry thermal innerwear, fleece layers, a windproof jacket, UV-protection sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and sturdy trekking shoes. Altitude sickness medication such as Diamox should be packed after consulting a doctor. Keep a personal first aid kit, a power bank, and offline maps downloaded as network coverage remains patchy beyond Reckong Peo. Light woollens are essential even for summer departures given the cold nights at high altitude.
