Self-Drive Considerations: Mumbai to Spiti Valley 

• Fuel stops: The last reliable HP or IOC pump before Kaza on the Shimla route is at Reckong Peo (Powari), followed by a limited outlet at Puh. On the Manali route, fuel up at Tandi, which sits 365 km ahead of the next pump if you continue toward Leh — but the Kaza detour has no pumps between Losar and Kaza itself. Always carry 10 litres of spare fuel beyond Peo or Tandi.
• Mobile network gaps: Only BSNL postpaid works consistently between Nako and Kaza. Jio and Airtel drop out for stretches of 60-80 km. We issue BSNL SIMs to our self-drive convoy clients for exactly this reason.
• Mechanical support limits: The nearest 4x4-capable mechanic beyond Reckong Peo is at Kaza itself, and parts availability is limited to Maruti, Mahindra and Royal Enfield lines. If you drive a European or Japanese SUV, carry a basic spare kit — a lesson three of our early self-drive clients learned the hard way in 2021 before we standardised the pre-departure checklist.
• Permits: Indian nationals do not need an Spiti Inner Line Permit for the standard Spiti circuit, but foreign passport holders do, obtainable at Reckong Peo or Kaza SDM offices.

Two Routes into Spiti: Manali vs Shimla

Manali to Kaza Route

• Distance: 200 km
• Driving time: 9-11 hours (a full day, unsplittable in winter)
• Passes crossed: Rohtang Pass (3,978 m) and Kunzum La (4,590 m)
• Open months: Mid-June to mid-October only; Rohtang and Kunzum stay snowbound the rest of the year
• Difficulty: High - steep gradients, unpaved stretches past Batal, and no fuel between Manali and Kaza
• AMS risk: High. You climb from 2,050 m (Manali) to 4,590 m (Kunzum La) within a single day, giving your body zero time to acclimatise.

Shimla to Kaza Route

• Distance: 412 km
• Driving time: 14-16 hours, ideally split across two days at Sarahan, Sangla or Kalpa
• Passes crossed: No high passes; the road follows the Sutlej and Spiti river valleys with gradual altitude gain
• Open months: Year-round, subject to weather-based closures at Nako or Ka-Cham in January-February
• Difficulty: Moderate - the is metalled almost throughout, and BRO maintenance frequency is higher than on the Manali side
• AMS risk: Low. Altitude gain is spread across 3 days (Shimla 2,200 m → Sarahan 2,165 m → Kalpa 2,960 m → Kaza 3,800 m), which is why our trip captains  recommend this route for first-time high-altitude travellers.

New Delhi Station (NDLS)

• Distance: 1,384 km, journey 15-22 hours depending on train class
• Fastest Trains: 12951 NDLS Tejas Raj (15h), 12449 Goa Smprk K (17h), 12925 Paschim Express (22h), 12137 Punjab Mail (24h), 
• Both are daily premium trains with meals included in Rajdhani
• Fare: 3AC ₹2600-₹3100, 2AC ₹3800-₹4400, 1AC ₹6200-₹7000

CSMT (Mumbai) to Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM):

• Distance: 1,384 km, journey 15h 55m to 22h 40m
• Trains: 12431 Rajdhani EXP (16h), 12903 Golden Temple (18h), 12951 NDLS Tejas Raj (15h)
• Nizamuddin is closer to South Delhi and ISBT Sarai Kale Khan for onward bus connections
• Fare: Sleeper ₹700-₹900, 3AC ₹1900-₹2400, 2AC ₹2700-₹3400

Chandigarh Railway Station (CDG):

• Distance: 705 km
• Trains from Mumbai: (12449) Goa Smprk K (21h 20m), (12925) Paschim Express (27h 28m). 
• Best-connected railhead with daily direct trains from Mumbai
• Onward: Shared taxi ₹800-₹1200 or private cab ₹6000-₹8000 to Kaza

Ambala Cantt Railway Station (UMB):

• Distance to Kaza: 760 km, road journey (15-17h)

• Major junction with high train frequency, good waitlist backup
