Kazbegi Experiences Worth Planning Your Trip Around

The best things to do in Georgia especially Kazbegi, are spread between the church on the ridge, the trails in the valley, and the mountains above both. This is a place for the outdoors and the view rather than the city, and the experiences suit that.

1. Hike to Gergeti Trinity Church

The hike from Stepantsminda up to the church takes about an hour and a half to two hours, climbing through meadows and pine forest to the ridge at 2,170 meters, where the fourteenth-century church stands with Mount Kazbek behind it. Every photograph of Georgia that made you want to come is probably this view. It is worth starting early to avoid the midday heat in summer and to catch the church in morning clouds in winter.

2. Trek toward the Gergeti Glacier

Above the church, a longer trail continues toward the Gergeti Glacier at the foot of Mount Kazbek. It is a serious day hike rather than a casual walk and suits people who want more than the church, but the upper meadows alone are worth the extra hour past the ridge.

3. Drive the Military Highway

The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi is part of the trip, not just the transfer. It passes Ananuri Fortress sitting on the Zhinvali reservoir, climbs to the Jvari Pass at nearly 2,400 meters, and drops into the Kazbegi valley with the range visible the whole way. 4. Spend a day in the valley

The valley around Stepantsminda has trails at lower altitude for anyone who wants the mountains without the full climb to the church. The Terek River runs through the valley floor, and the walk along the riverbank is easy, quiet, and a good way to spend the hours after the Gergeti hike.

5. Experience Kazbegi in winter

Kazbegi in winter is one of the better reasons to visit Georgia outside the summer season. The valley fills with snow, Gergeti sits above the cloud line on the clearest days, and the crowds on the trail are a fraction of what they are in July. The hike to the church is harder on a snow-covered path, which is also what makes it worth doing.
