In Meghalaya, the drive is part of the trip. Roads wind through valleys, landscapes shift every few kilometres, and the best stops are often the ones you did not plan for. That's exactly what our Meghalaya road trip packages are built around.
WanderOn's packages start at ₹21,499 and run across 6 to 10 days on the Guwahati to Guwahati loop. The routes cover Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Dawki, Shnongpdeng, the Jaintia Hills, and Kaziranga, with driving days built around actual road conditions rather than optimistic timelines on paper.
Road conditions in Meghalaya change with the season. Fog moves in fast near Cherrapunji, certain stretches toward Dawki narrow down considerably, and the best stops on the route are often the ones not on a standard itinerary. Over 7 years and 2,000+ departures across the region, we have learned which roads need an early start, which detours are worth taking, and when to adjust the plan without losing a day.
Whether you want to take a road trip in a sedan, SUV, 4x4, Tempo Traveller, or even on a bike, the choice is yours.
Our group or customised Meghalaya tour packages run with a dedicated Trip Captain, verified local operators at key stops, and a 24x7 team tracking road and weather conditions throughout the trip. Choose from fixed group departures, bike trip packages, or a customised private itinerary. Browse our Meghalaya road trip packages and pick the route that fits your schedule.

Most experienced road trippers recommend the Guwahati-to-Guwahati counter-clockwise loop over doing daily return trips from a single base. Travelers booking Meghalaya tour packages from Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities typically fly into Guwahati and start the drive from there. The best route for a Meghalaya road trip cuts through the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, runs along the Bangladesh border, and covers the best of Meghalaya.
- Guwahati to Cherrapunji (4 to 5 hours)
Drive straight through on NH40 to NH106. Skip the Shillong evening traffic and push through to Cherrapunji. Stop at the Umiam Lake viewpoint and Mawkdok Dympep Valley on the way.
- Cherrapunji Exploration (Full Day)
A full day on local Cherrapunji roads. Catch Nohkalikai Falls in the morning before fog moves in. Explore Mawsmai or Arwah Cave in the afternoon.
- Cherrapunji to Nongriat (1 hour drive + 4 to 5 hours trek)
Drive down to Tyrna Village and park. Trek the 3,500 stone steps to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. Overnight in Nongriat or back at Tyrna.
- Cherrapunji to Shnongpdeng via Mawlynnong (3 to 4 hours)
Drive south via Pynursla through Mawlynnong village. Skip the crowded Dawki border point and continue 25 minutes further to Shnongpdeng for riverside camping on the Umngot River.
- Shnongpdeng to Shillong via Jowai ( 4 to 5 hours)
Drive up through the Jaintia Hills on NH106. Stop at Krang Suri Waterfall near Jowai and take the short detour to Laitlum Canyons before reaching Shillong.
- Shillong to Guwahati (3 to 4 hours)
Morning in Shillong for cafes, Police Bazaar, or the Don Bosco Museum. Drive back on NH40 after lunch and head to Guwahati airport. Driving
- Tap the horn twice on blind curves to alert oncoming traffic. Standard practice on rural mountain roads
- Use low-beam headlights in fog. High-beams reflect off the mist and reduce visibility further
Route and Timing
- Reach your stop by 3:30 to 4:00 PM. Daylight ends early in Northeast India and unlit mountain roads after dark are stressful
- Avoid entering Shillong between 4 PM and 8 PM. Traffic near Police Bazaar and Jhalupara gets heavy during this window
- Ask your homestay host about local market days in towns like Pynursla or Jowai. Roads through these areas get blocked on market days
Cash and Connectivity
- Carry at least Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 in cash. UPI and ATMs fail regularly in valleys like Shnongpdeng, Nongriat, and Tyrna
- Download offline maps before crossing into Meghalaya. Mobile data drops across large sections of the route
- Use a BSNL or Airtel SIM for off-beat stretches. Jio and Vodafone lose signal in deeper rural valleys
What to Pack
- A poncho or compact umbrella. Cloudbursts can come through even in the dry months
- Trekking shoes with deep rubber grip. The Root Bridge steps stay damp and mossy and regular sneakers slip easily
Not for most of the route. The highways and major roads linking Guwahati, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong are well-maintained and suitable for standard cars and Tempo Travellers year-round.
Unless you're venturing into remote villages, the routes included in most Meghalaya road trip packages are easily accessible.
A 4x4 becomes useful in two situations. First, during or just after heavy monsoon rain when certain stretches near Cherrapunji or the Jaintia Hills get waterlogged and slippery. Second, for specific off-road detours like the approach to Krem Chympe Cave, where the track is rough enough to need higher ground clearance.
For the standard route, a well-maintained SUV or Tempo Traveller handles everything comfortably. If your itinerary includes off-road sections or you are traveling close to peak monsoon, a 4x4 is worth the upgrade.
WanderOn's team assesses the route and vehicle requirement before every departure so you are not over or under-prepared for the roads ahead.
Self-driving through Meghalaya is safe for tourists, but the challenges here are environmental rather than social.
Why It Is Socially Safe
- Local drivers are known for lane discipline and patient driving on narrow hill roads
- Crime against tourists is rare. Meghalaya's Khasi and Garo societies are matrilineal, which creates a generally respectful environment, particularly for solo and female travelers
- English is understood along most tourist routes. If you get lost or break down, locals are usually quick to help
Environmental Hazards to Watch
- Dense fog near Cherrapunji and Pynursla can drop visibility to near zero without much warning. Avoid driving at night or during heavy rain in these areas
- Monsoon landslides between June and September can block roads toward Dawki and the Jaintia Hills suddenly and without notice
- Gradients inside Shillong and on rural routes are steep. Without solid hill-start and clutch control, stalling on a slope becomes a real risk
October to April is the best time to visit Meghalaya for road trips. Roads are clear, weather is stable, and all stops along the route are accessible. - October to February: Most reliable window for road trips. Clear skies, the Umngot River at peak clarity, and waterfalls still strong from the monsoon.
- March to May: Dry roads, fewer crowds, and accessible trails. Temperatures rise toward May but driving stays comfortable.
- June to September: Waterfalls at full volume and the landscape at its most dramatic. Landslides, dense fog near Cherrapunji, and unpredictable roads toward Dawki are real factors during this period. Our best Meghalaya road trip packages in June and September are built with contingency routes for exactly these conditions.
