What You Get:
You also get time for local shopping, exploring on your own, and optional adventure activities.
If you're planning a trip to the Northeast and wondering how to reach Meghalaya from Pune, the good news is—you’ve got several travel options to choose from. While there are no direct flights or trains to Meghalaya, getting there is still pretty smooth with the right plan in place (which is where WanderOn steps in).
Whether you prefer to fly, take a train, or mix and match your travel modes, we’ve got you covered with all the details.
The most convenient way to reach Meghalaya is by taking a Pune to Meghalaya flight. Now, since Meghalaya doesn’t have a major international airport, your best option is to fly to Guwahati in Assam, which is the nearest major city.
From Guwahati, Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong is just a 3-hour scenic drive away. Most of our Meghalaya tour packages from Pune include this transfer to ensure a seamless journey.
If you're specifically aiming for Shillong, you can also look for a Pune to Shillong flight, but here’s the catch—Shillong Airport (also known as Umroi Airport) only receives a few flights, mostly from Kolkata or Delhi. So, a better bet is to land in Guwahati and drive to Shillong.
Bonus Tip:
Don’t forget to book early! The Pune to Meghalaya flight ticket price usually ranges from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000, depending on the season. Weekends and holidays tend to be more expensive, so locking your spot in advance helps save money.
If you're up for a longer journey and want to travel at a slower pace, the Pune to Meghalaya train route can be a fun experience. There’s no direct train to Meghalaya, but you can take a long-distance train from Pune to Guwahati.
From Guwahati Railway Station, WanderOn arranges a private cab or tempo traveller as part of our Meghalaya tour packages from Pune, so your journey continues comfortably.
Recommended Route:
And if you're specifically searching for a Pune to Shillong train, here’s a heads-up—there isn’t one. Shillong doesn't have a railway station. Guwahati is the closest one, just like it is for air travel.
Technically, you can drive the whole way from Pune to Meghalaya. But here's the tea—it’s a long journey. The Pune to Meghalaya distance by road is around 2,300 km, and it could take over 40 hours of continuous driving, depending on the route and stops.
While we don’t recommend this unless you're a hardcore road tripper or have a lot of time on your hands, some people do combine this route with stopovers at major cities like Nagpur and Kolkata.
Still, the fastest and most popular option remains flying to Guwahati and driving to Shillong from there.
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking on living root bridges or seeing waterfalls in their full monsoon glory, you’ve probably looked up how to get to Cherrapunji. Now you might wonder, is there a Pune to Cherrapunji flight?
Sadly, no. Cherrapunji (locally called Sohra) doesn’t have an airport. But it’s just a 2-hour drive from Shillong. When you book one of our Meghalaya tour packages from Pune, the scenic ride to Cherrapunji is already included, so no extra planning is needed on your end.

“This was my first time traveling to the North-East (Meghalaya + Kaziranga). The accommodations were excellent, with delicious food. It was particularly safe for female solo travelers .The fellow travelers were also fantastic and full of fun. Special thanks to our trip captain Anubhav. His attention to everyone's comfort and ensuring a good time was truly commendable. His wonderful playlist added an extra touch of enjoyment to the journey. To the WanderOn team, I have a couple of suggestions: 1. Consider adding some off-beat places to the itinerary. 2. Improve the Tempo Traveler as it was a long journey and there was not enough leg space. From trekking through lush greenery to encountering majestic wildlife, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement. It was a journey I'll cherish forever. And already, I find myself missing Meghalaya and the friends we made on the trip.

“We went on a customised trip to Meghalaya with Wanderon. We don’t know where to begin as this trip has been one of the best decisions we made. Every single place mentioned in the itinerary was mesmerisingly beautiful. We were able to cover all places. The accommodation booked in every place was more than what we expected. Our driver Mr. Biju Das, he is a very friendly, witty person who made these 6 days of our journey joyful. He also took us to places which was not part of the itinerary like Shillong peak, wah-kaba falls etc.,and he made sure we don’t miss out on any places. He would happily say “chaliye aap logon ko meri taraf se kuch dikhata hoon”. He also took us to nice restaurants like sardarji da dhaba( near to airport) flames & flavours( near elephant falls). Lastly I would like to thank Anusha who coordinated this trip with us and made sure everything was going well and there was no hassle or issues. Special thanks to Divas Agarwal for curating this itinerary as per our needs. Thank you Wanderon for this well coordinated trip. Looking forward for many more trips with you all. 😍🥰
