Best Meghalaya Backpacking Tour Packages You Can Join in 2026

What truly defines backpacking is the people you meet along the way. Long road journeys, shared stays, riverside conversations, and unexpected detours often become the stories travellers remember most. It's a side of Meghalaya tourism that rarely appears in guidebooks but often becomes the highlight of the trip. That's where WanderOn's Meghalaya Backpacking Tour Packages come in.
WanderOn has been running Meghalaya tour packages for 7+ years, taking 5,000+ travellers across 2,000+ trips on routes that go well past the standard checklist. Our backpacking packages run from 6 to 7 days with departures starting at ₹21,499 per person5+ itineraries built around different depths of the state, from the core highlights to the corners most backpackers never reach.
As a backpacker, Meghalaya has a way of constantly making you extend your bucket list. You start by planning for Shillong and Cherrapunji, then suddenly you're looking up hidden waterfalls, boat rides on the glass-clear waters of Dawki, lesser-known caves, and places like Wari Chora that barely make it to mainstream itineraries.
Every departure of ours has a dedicated trip captain on the ground handling stays, transfers, and local coordination. The logistics are sorted. The trail is yours.
Backed by a 4.9-star rating across 15,000+ traveller reviews, our best Meghalaya backpacking tour packages are shaped by years of local experience, route planning, and traveller feedback. All you have to do now is pick a departure and start exploring the Abode of Clouds.

Planning a Meghalaya Backpacking Trip? Here's Why It's Better With WanderOn

The Meghalaya backpacking route looks straightforward until you're actually on it. Shared cabs that leave when full, trails that take twice as long as Google says, and remote stops that need coordination most backpackers only figure out after they've landed. WanderOn has run enough departures through the northeast to have worked through all of it.
  • We've Done This Route More Than 2,000 Times
Every stop from Shillong to Dawki has been walked, timed, and adjusted across real trips with real backpackers. The itineraries aren't built from travel blogs, they're built from what actually works on the ground.
  • You Book Alone, You Travel With a Group
WanderOn's Meghalaya backpacking tour packages bring independent travellers together on fixed departures. Most groups click on the first day on the road.
  • All Transport Sorted Before You Arrive
Shared cabs, local transfers, and intercity vehicles are pre-arranged for travellers coming from Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, and across India. The northeast can be logistically tricky; that part is handled before you land.
  • Routes With Real Depth
Root bridge treks, Dawki boating, Wari Chora canyon rides, Krem Chympe cave walks, and trails that don't make it onto standard itineraries. Built for backpackers who want more than a highlight reel.
  • Stays Chosen for the Location
From Khasi family homestays in remote villages to hotels, camps, and guesthouses in Shillong and Cherrapunji, accommodations are chosen to suit the destination rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Permits Handled Before Departure
Inner Line Permit requirements are taken care of by the team. Nothing to figure out on your own before the trip begins.
  • Three Departure Months to Choose From
June for monsoon drama, September and October for post-monsoon clarity. Fixed departures across all three windows keep costs shared and the group size intimate.
  • A Trip Captain With the Group Throughout
Every WanderOn Meghalaya group tour package for backpackers has a dedicated Trip Captain travelling with the group—present on the ground from day one to the last day.
  • 24×7 Support From Booking to Return
The team is reachable at any hour. Solo backpacking feels considerably easier when there is always someone available.
  • Verified Reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, and Facebook
Thousands of backpackers have left honest accounts of their WanderOn experience. Worth reading before booking any Meghalaya backpacking tour packages.

Here’s what Abhijeet Kumar shared after joining one of our Meghalaya trip packages:
“I recently traveled to Kaziranga and Meghalaya from Wanderon, and while the landscapes were breathtaking, the real highlight of this trip was the community we built.
Our captain Nisha was the heartbeat of this experience. She didn’t just manage the itinerary to perfection; she curated a vibe where everyone felt seen and included. It’s rare to find a leader who is so professional yet knows exactly how to make a trip fun and cohesive.
Because of her efforts to ensure everyone participated, a group of strangers turned into a genuine little family.”

5N/6D Meghalaya Backpacking Itinerary Highlights (Monsoon Edition)

A rough idea of how the days unfold on one of WanderOn's most popular Meghalaya backpacking routes.
Day 1 — Land in Guwahati, Head to Shillong
Fly in before 11:30 AM and your transfer is already waiting. A scenic drive up to Shillong with a lunch stop on the way and a quick pause at Umiam Lake viewpoint before you check in for the evening.
Day 2—Nongjrong Sunrise, Arwah Cave, Nohkalikai Falls
The early start on this Meghalaya backpacking itinerary is worth it—2:00 AM departure to catch sunrise above a sea of clouds at Nongjrong. Back to Shillong, check out, then on to Arwah Cave and Nohkalikai Falls before checking into Cherrapunji for the night.
Day 3 — Wei Sawdong Falls, Mawsmai Caves, Mawlynnong Village
A full day covering a hidden three-tiered waterfall, narrow cave passages, and Asia's cleanest village. The Single Decker Root Bridge and the Balancing Rock at Riwai round off the day before returning to Cherrapunji.
Day 4 — Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek
The centrepiece of any Meghalaya backpacking route. Around 3,300 steps down through forest trails to a bridge shaped entirely by living roots over generations. Swim in the natural pool below, take your time, then climb back up to Tyrna Village.
Day 5—Mawlyngbna Adventure, Then Shillong
One of the offbeat places in Meghalaya on the route and one of the best. River treks through monsoon trails, optional cliff jumping into a natural pool, kayaking on Umkhakoi Lake, and the Split Rock Formation—all before heading into Shillong for the evening markets.
Day 6 — Laitlum Canyon, Umiam Lake, Guwahati
A final morning at Laitlum Canyon with valley views stretching endlessly into the horizon, one last stop at Umiam Lake, then the drive back to Guwahati Airport. Six days well spent.

Bucket-List Experiences on a Meghalaya Backpacking Trip

If you're planning Meghalaya tour packages from Pune, Chennai, or elsewhere in India, these are the experiences worth travelling for.
  • Boating on the Umngot River, Dawki — Water so clear boats look suspended in the air. Get there early before the crowds do
  • Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek—3,300 steps into Nongriat through jungle trails to reach a bridge grown over centuries. Hard on the legs, impossible to forget
  • Meghalaya in Monsoon—Waterfalls on every hillside, valleys impossibly green, and a landscape that feels completely alive. The wettest place on earth earns it every June
  • Kaziranga Jeep Safari—Extend the trip into Assam for early morning grasslands, one-horned rhinos, and a landscape nothing like the Meghalaya hills
  • Laitlum Canyon and Nongjrong—Clouds at eye level, valleys dropping away below, and a quiet that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else
  • Krem Chympe Cave—Cave passages, forest trails, and river crossings in a single day. The kind of stop that makes a backpacking trip feel like a real adventure
  • Nohkalikai and Phe Phe Falls—Best in monsoon when the water hits with full force. Nohkalikai alone makes the drive worth it
  • Riverside Camping at Shnongpdeng—Bonfire, open sky, river a few steps away. Cliff jumping and snorkelling in the morning if you're up for it
  • Mawlynnong Village — Asia's cleanest village isn't a title handed out lightly. Walk slowly, ask questions, and let the community-led way of life here do the talking
  • Meghalaya on a Bike — Mountain roads, forested descents, villages off the map. For backpackers who want the journey to count as much as the destination

How Much Does a 5–7 Day Meghalaya Backpacking Cost?

A 5–7 day Meghalaya backpacking trip costs between ₹10,000 and ₹18,000 per person when travelling independently from Guwahati.
Budget roughly ₹500 to ₹1,000 per night for accommodation, ₹400 to ₹600 per day on food, and ₹500 to ₹1,000 on local transport if you're going independent. Shared Sumos between Guwahati, Shillong, Sohra, and Dawki are the cheapest way to move — private taxis jump to ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 per day and eat into the budget fast. Entry fees at waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints are small individually but stack up across a full itinerary.
Fixed-departure Meghalaya solo trip packages for backpacking run between ₹20,000 and ₹27,500 per person with accommodation, intercity transfers, and ground logistics already covered, often the more practical number once you add up what independent travel actually costs across 6 to 7 days.
Tips to Keep Your Meghalaya Backpacking Budget Low
  • Fly into Guwahati instead of Shillong for better flight options and lower fares.
  • Stay in hostels and local homestays — cheaper and a natural way to meet other travellers willing to split cab costs
  • Eat at Khasi eateries and roadside stalls — filling meals under ₹150 and almost always better than tourist-facing restaurants
  • Join fixed-departure Meghalaya backpacking tour packages or travel with a group — transport is where independent Meghalaya backpacking budgets go wrong most often

Is an ILP Required for Backpackers Visiting Meghalaya?

No. Indian citizens can travel freely across Meghalaya—Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong, and most backpacking destinations—without any special permit. This applies whether you're booking Meghalaya tour packages from Jaipur, Delhi, Chennai, or any other city in India.
Heading into Nagaland, Mizoram, or Arunachal Pradesh changes things — all three require an Inner Line Permit regardless of how long you're staying. Foreign nationals travelling through Meghalaya need to register at the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of landing.
For the Kaziranga extension into Assam, no additional permits are needed beyond standard ID. WanderOn handles all documentation requirements as part of the package.

What Is the Best Time to Plan a Meghalaya Backpacking Trip?

The best time to visit Meghalaya for a backpacking trip depends on what kind of experience you're after.
  • October to November is the most popular window for backpackers—post-monsoon freshness, clear skies, waterfalls still running, and Dawki at its most transparent. First-timers are best served by this window.
  • June to September is monsoon season—dramatic, green, and unlike anywhere else in India. Road conditions can be unpredictable, and some routes may get affected, so flexibility is essential. Not the easiest window to travel in, but arguably the most memorable.
  • December to February is quieter and cooler with fewer crowds. Rivers and waterfalls are at their lowest, but the pace suits backpackers who prefer unhurried travel.
  • March to May is a decent shoulder season with pleasant weather before the monsoon kicks in.
