Best Meghalaya Wildlife Tour Packages for Every Traveller

Most Meghalaya tour packages spend 80% of the trip chasing waterfalls and viewpoints. The problem? That's only half the story. Some of the state's most rewarding experiences happen away from the crowded stops: inside dense forests, biodiversity hotspots, wildlife sanctuaries, and national parks where nature takes over. That's exactly why WanderOn created exclusive Meghalaya wildlife tour packages.
If you're the kind of traveller who'd rather spend a morning tracking rhinos than ticking off monuments, these are your tours. Pick from 8+ Meghalaya wildlife tour packages across 7 to 10 days, covering dense forests, untouched landscapes, and a stop at Kaziranga that usually ends up being the trip highlight.
Whether you join a group of like-minded travellers, hit the road on a bike trip, or opt for a customized private itinerary, there's a trip for every kind of explorer looking to experience Meghalaya tourism beyond the usual sights.
Over the last 7+ years, WanderOn has operated 2,000+ departures across Meghalaya and hosted 5,000+ travellers on routes we've continuously refined through on-ground learning. Every trip is led by a dedicated trip captain and backed by a 24×7 operations team, ensuring the logistics stay smooth while you focus on the experience.
Why settle for just sightseeing when you can explore Meghalaya's wild side too? Book our customised Meghalaya wildlife tour packages and see what nature has in store.

Why Travellers Choose WanderOn for Meghalaya Wildlife Tours

Wildlife tourism in Meghalaya doesn't follow a neat, predictable format. The best spots sit deep inside forests, transport between them runs on its own logic, and most of the good stuff needs local coordination that you can't really figure out from a screen.
WanderOn has run over 2,000 trips through this region—every trail timed, every transfer tested, and every stop adjusted based on what actually works.
  • Solo Travellers, Shared Groups, or Something Private/Custom: You book on your own and travel with a group of like-minded people on fixed departures. Most groups gel by the first evening. And if you'd rather do things your own way, WanderOn offers customized wildlife tour packages in Meghalaya too.
  • Transport and Permits — Already Handled: Whether you're coming from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Bangalore, all transfers and permits are sorted before you land. The northeast is tricky to navigate independently—that part's taken care of.
  • Routes Built Around Meghalaya's Wild Side: Kaziranga jeep safaris chasing one-horned rhinos; treks through dense forest canopy to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge; boating on the glassy Umngot River; cave walks through Krem Chympe, and trails most packages don't bother including.
  • Stays That Fit the Landscape: Riverside camps, Khasi homestays, forest-edge guesthouses—picked to match the surroundings, not some standardised checklist.
  • Trip Captain With You Throughout: Every WanderOn Meghalaya group tour package has a dedicated trip captain on the ground from start to finish, backed by 24/7 support from the team.
  • Three Departure Windows: June for monsoon forests at their most alive. September and October for post-rain clarity and better wildlife spotting.
  • 15,000+ Verified Reviews Across TripAdvisor, Google, and Facebook: Real travellers have shared real accounts of their experiences on Google—the good and the honest. It is worth spending ten minutes reading through before you decide on any wildlife tour package for Meghalaya.
  • Meghalaya Bike Trips on the Same Trusted Routes: If you'd rather feel Meghalaya's winding mountain roads and forest stretches on two wheels, WanderOn also runs dedicated Meghalaya bike trip packages built on the same routes we've been refining across years of departures. Same planning, same support, just a completely different way to experience the wild side of the northeast.
Memories Our Travellers Took Back from Meghalaya
Anant Pandey shares his WanderOn Meghalaya travel package experience:
“My trip to Meghalaya was incredible. What stood out the most was our wonderful trip captain, Nisha - an absolute rockstar. She was a powerhouse of energy while also making everyone feel comfortable and at ease.
The stay arrangements were well taken care of. The level of professionalism throughout the trip was outstanding. From the initial briefing call to clear and consistent communication during the journey, everything was well managed. A special mention again to Nisha, who managed to be incredibly patient with everyone while somehow keeping the entire itinerary perfectly on schedule."
Here’s what Abhijeet Kumar shared after joining one of our Meghalaya wildlife tour packages:
“I recently traveled to Kaziranga and Meghalaya from Wanderon, and while the landscapes were breathtaking, the real highlight of this trip was the community we built.
Our captain Nisha was the heartbeat of this experience. She didn’t just manage the itinerary to perfection; she curated a vibe where everyone felt seen and included. It’s rare to find a leader who is so professional yet knows exactly how to make a trip fun and cohesive.
Because of her efforts to ensure everyone participated, a group of strangers turned into a genuine little family.”

What Happens to Meghalaya Wildlife Safaris During the Rains? Answers from our Meghalaya Trip Captains

  • Kaziranga National Park closes completely from mid-May to October — every single year, no exceptions. No safaris, no visitors, no entry. If you're planning wildlife tourism in Meghalaya and the northeast, this is the first thing you should factor into your dates.
  • The Brahmaputra floods the entire park. The river runs right alongside Kaziranga, and during monsoon it swells so badly that 70% to 80% of the grasslands go completely underwater. Not just muddy or waterlogged — fully submerged.
  • Safaris shut down in stages. Elephant safaris are the first to get cancelled, usually by early May. Jeep safari tracks follow by late May. After that, the park belongs to the forest department and the animals—nobody else gets in.
  • The animals migrate to higher ground. Rhinos, elephants, and tigers don't sit around in rising water. They use designated wildlife corridors, cross national highways, and move toward the Karbi Anglong Hills, where the flooding can't reach. It happens every year like clockwork.
  • The park infrastructure gets wrecked. Wooden bridges wash away, dirt roads disappear under silt, and raised highlands that took years to build erode overnight. All of it has to be repaired before the park can safely reopen.
  • Safaris only resume once the water fully recedes, usually around late October or early November. That's when the dry season kicks in, and it's safe again for both tourists and wildlife. Most Meghalaya nature tour packages are planned around this window for exactly this reason.

Do Meghalaya Wildlife Tour Packages Require Any Permits?

Short answer: it depends on where exactly you're going. Most Meghalaya wildlife tours cover multiple zones with different rules, so here's what you actually need to know.
  • No Inner Line Permit needed for Meghalaya. Unlike some other northeastern states, Indian travellers can enter freely; there is no extra paperwork when booking Meghalaya wildlife tour packages.
  • Kaziranga requires a safari permit. Jeep and elephant safaris need advance booking, and peak season slots fill up quickly. WanderOn handles all of this before you even reach the northeast.
  • Community forests charge small entry fees. Places like Mawphanlur, Balpakram, and local sacred groves are managed by Khasi or Garo communities. Expect ₹20 to ₹100, though rules vary village to village.
  • Nokrek Biosphere Reserve needs prior clearance. You can't just show up — permissions need to be arranged a few days in advance.
  • Some caves require local coordination. Spots like Krem Chympe need a go-ahead from local guides or village authorities before you can enter.
  • Nagaland detours need an Inner Line Permit. If your Meghalaya wildlife tour packages route passes through Nagaland or Assam, that's separate paperwork you'll need sorted ahead of time.

WanderOn Destination Expert Tips for Wildlife Photography During Your Kaziranga Safari

For travellers joining our Meghalaya Tour Packages from Kerala, Delhi, or any other city, Kaziranga often turns out to be one of the most rewarding stops for wildlife photography. Here are a few tips to help bring out your inner Farhan from 3 Idiots:
  • You'll need to pay a camera fee at entry. It's around ₹100 for a still camera — video and professional gear might cost a bit more. Keep the receipt with your entry permit until you leave the park.
  • Flash is completely banned inside the park. No exceptions. It startles the animals and can trigger dangerous reactions. Most wildlife tour packages in Meghalaya will brief you on this, but worth knowing beforehand so you adjust your settings accordingly.
  • Bring a long telephoto lens. A 400mm to 600mm is ideal for getting close-up shots of rhinos across Kaziranga's open wetlands without actually being anywhere near them. Most Meghalaya wildlife safari packages that include Kaziranga will give you plenty of chances to use it.
  • Carry an empty beanbag. Fill it with rice or sand once you're there and rest it on the metal frame of your safari gypsy. Way more stable than trying to handhold a heavy lens on a shaky vehicle.
  • Keep your shutter speed at 1/1000s or faster. The engine vibrations alone will blur your shots, and animals like swamp deer and wild buffalo don't exactly pose for you. Birds flush out without warning too.
  • Use the morning elephant safari for angles you can't get otherwise. The height gives you a completely different perspective. Or lean low in your gypsy to get eye-level frames against the tall elephant grass — those shots always stand out.
  • Watch your exposure in the early morning mist. Kaziranga gets seriously foggy at dawn and your camera's meter will almost certainly underexpose. Dial in some positive exposure compensation manually and check your histogram often.
  • Bring a dust cover or at least a cotton cloth. Safari convoys kick up a ridiculous amount of dust, and it gets into everything. Your lenses and sensor will thank you later.
  • Run two camera bodies if you can. One with the telephoto for animal portraits, one with a 24-70mm for wider habitat shots. Switching lenses mid-safari in that dust is asking for trouble.

A Practical Packing List for Nature and Wildlife Tours in Meghalaya: Real Experiences

Clothing & Footwear

  • Stick to earthy, muted colours. Khaki, olive, brown — that kind of stuff. Bright colours stand out in Kaziranga's grasslands and can spook animals before you even get close enough to see them properly.
  • Layer up for the mornings. A fleece or windcheater is a must. Early morning safaris in Kaziranga are colder than people expect, and evenings up in Meghalaya's hills can get properly chilly too.
  • Get yourself proper hiking shoes. Waterproof boots with solid rubber grip — you'll need them on Meghalaya's muddy rainforest trails and slippery riverbeds. Regular sneakers won't cut it.
  • Throw in a pair of sandals. After a long day of trekking or safari, the last thing you want is to be stuck in boots around camp. Something easy to slip on makes a big difference.

Gear & Electronics

  • Carry a scarf or bandana for the dust. Kaziranga's gypsy tracks kick up an insane amount of dust, especially when you're in a convoy. A simple cotton cloth over your nose and mouth saves you a lot of discomfort.
  • Waterproof covers for everything. Monsoon in Meghalaya doesn't give warnings. Get proper rain sleeves for your camera gear and a waterproof cover for your backpack — you'll use them more than you think.
  • Bring a decent power bank. Electricity in rural areas and forest camps is unreliable at best. A high-capacity, fast-charging power bank keeps your phone and camera batteries alive when there's no socket in sight.
  • Pack a small headlamp. Eco-resorts and forest lodges aren't exactly well-lit at night. A lightweight LED headlamp makes walking around after dark much easier and safer.

Health & Personal Care

Strong mosquito repellent is non-negotiable. Deep jungle treks and open wetland safaris mean you're in prime mosquito territory. Go for a high-DEET spray and reapply often. Carry salt or anti-leech spray. Leeches are a reality on Meghalaya's forest trails, especially during or just after rain. A pinch of salt or a small bottle of leech lotion handles them quickly. Don't skip sunscreen. The Assam plains get seriously hot and sunny, especially on open-top safari vehicles. A high-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen saves you from a miserable sunburn by day two.

Documents & Essentials

  • Pull out enough cash in Guwahati before you head out. ATMs in remote areas are unreliable, and UPI or card payments fail constantly because of bad networks. Most Meghalaya wildlife tours take you to places where cash is the only thing that works.
  • Keep your documents in a waterproof pouch. Park entry permits, camera receipts, government IDs — put them all in a sealed ziplock bag. One unexpected downpour or river crossing and wet paper becomes unreadable paper.
