The best time to visit Spain depends on which part of the country you want to see. You could be enjoying a beach afternoon in Barcelona while Seville is dealing with intense summer heat and the Basque Country is having a cooler, occasionally rainy day. Spain doesn't follow one weather pattern, so choosing your travel month by looking at the country as a whole can be misleading.
For most first-time travellers, April to June and September to October are the two best windows. You get comfortable sightseeing weather in much of the country, pleasant evenings and more flexibility when planning city visits. If beaches are your priority, summer has its place. If you want winter sunshine, southern Spain and the Canary Islands are good options.
Here's how to choose the best Europe tour packages based on the places you want to visit in Spain, the weather you enjoy and the festivals you might want to experience.
Best Time To Visit Spain At A Glance
Spain has six distinct travel regions, each with its own climate and ideal travel season. The best time to visit depends on where you're headed.
Warm spring and autumn; intense heat in inland cities during July and August
Atlantic north (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Asturias, Galicia)
June–September
Milder summers, green landscapes and a chance of rain even in summer
Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca)
May–June, September–October
Warm beach days, lively summer season and quieter shoulder months
Canary Islands
Year-round
Mild temperatures, with winter particularly popular for sunshine
Quick answer: April to June and September to October work well for a trip covering several Spanish regions. Choose July or August for a beach-focused holiday or the northern coast. For Seville, Córdoba and other inland Andalusian cities, spring and autumn are much more comfortable.
The Twin Windows: April-June and September-October
If you're planning your first trip and want to visit more than one region, these are the months to look at first. Both periods offer a good balance of sightseeing weather, outdoor activities and manageable travel conditions.
April to June: Spring into Early Summer
Spring is a lovely time to explore Spain's cities and countryside. Parks and gardens are greener, outdoor cafés fill up and daytime temperatures are generally comfortable for walking around.
April: A good month for Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Madrid. Semana Santa can bring large crowds and higher hotel rates in cities known for their processions.
May: One of the strongest months for a multi-city holiday. Barcelona, Madrid and Andalusia are generally comfortable for sightseeing, while the northern coast starts getting warmer.
June: A good choice if you want sightseeing and beach time together. Coastal destinations and the Balearic Islands become more summery, although inland cities start getting hot towards the end of the month.
If you are visiting Barcelona, spring gives you time to explore the Gothic Quarter, walk along the waterfront and book a morning visit to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona before the hottest part of the day.
September to October: The Second Sweet Spot
September is particularly useful if you want warm beach weather without travelling during the busiest part of summer. The sea along much of the Mediterranean coast stays warm after the summer months, while city sightseeing becomes more comfortable.
September: A good month for Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Mallorca and Ibiza. You can combine beach time with city visits.
October: A strong choice for Madrid, Seville, Córdoba and Granada. Days are usually mild, although rain becomes more likely in parts of the north.
Late October: Expect cooler evenings and shorter days. Pack layers, especially if your itinerary includes Madrid or northern Spain.
The August Truth
August is a popular month for Spain holidays, particularly for European travellers taking their summer break. It is also one of the hottest and busiest periods of the year. Whether it works for you depends on where you plan to spend your time.
Spain in August: What to Expect
Inland cities such as Seville, Córdoba and Madrid can experience daytime temperatures above 35°C, with heatwaves pushing temperatures beyond 40°C. Walking around historic centres in the afternoon can be tiring, so plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and evening.
The coast has a different rhythm. Barcelona, Costa Brava, Valencia, Málaga and the Balearic Islands are popular for beach holidays, but expect busy beaches, higher accommodation rates and crowded restaurants.
You may also notice that some smaller, family-run businesses in cities close for part of August as residents take their summer holidays. Tourist attractions, major hotels and restaurants in busy areas generally continue operating, but check individual opening hours.
If August is your only option, plan around the heat:
Visit outdoor attractions early in the morning.
Keep museums and indoor activities for the afternoon.
Book beach accommodation and popular attractions ahead of time.
Carry water and sun protection, especially when exploring inland cities.
Consider the Basque Country, Asturias or Galicia if you prefer cooler summer days.
Seville Summer Heat
Seville is one of the places where summer planning matters most. Temperatures can climb above 40°C during heatwaves, and even ordinary summer afternoons can feel exhausting. If Seville is high on your list, consider March to May or October instead. You'll have a better chance of enjoying the Alcázar, Plaza de España and the old town on foot.
Spain's Three Climates, Decoded
Mediterranean Spain: Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic Islands
The Mediterranean side of Spain has hot summers and generally mild winters. Spring and autumn are comfortable for city breaks, while June to September suits beach holidays.
The best time to visit Barcelona is usually May, June or September. You can explore Gaudí's architecture, spend time around the Gothic Quarter and enjoy the waterfront without the peak summer heat. July and August are also good for swimming, but the city is busier and accommodation can cost more.
For Ibiza, May, June and September are useful months if you want a mix of beaches, restaurants and nightlife. July and August bring the busiest party season. If you're planning an island holiday, compare our Ibiza tour packages before choosing your dates.
Central Spain: Madrid, Toledo and the Meseta
Central Spain has a continental climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters can be cold, particularly at night. Madrid is a good spring and autumn destination, with April to June and September to October offering comfortable conditions for walking between museums, plazas and enjoying other things to do in Madrid.
Toledo and Segovia also work well during these months. Both are popular day trips from Madrid, and their historic streets involve plenty of walking. In July and August, start early and keep the afternoon free for indoor visits or a long lunch.
Atlantic Spain: Basque Country, Asturias and Galicia
Northern Spain is a good choice if you want milder summer temperatures. Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santander, Asturias and Galicia are greener than much of the Mediterranean coast, with more frequent rainfall.
June to September is the most reliable period for outdoor plans. July and August are particularly popular for coastal walks, food trips and beach visits. Carry a light rain jacket, though. A sunny forecast does not mean every day will stay dry.
Festival Anchors (and Their Crowds)
Spain's festivals can be a good reason to plan your holiday around a particular city. Just remember that popular festival dates also affect hotel availability, transport and local prices.
Semana Santa: March or April
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, takes place in the week leading up to Easter. Cities such as Seville, Málaga and Granada are known for their religious processions, with decorated floats carried through streets accompanied by music and large crowds.
The dates change every year. In 2027, Holy Week falls in late March, with major processions taking place across the week. If you want to attend, book accommodation early and check the local procession schedule. Streets can close temporarily, and some central areas become difficult to cross during processions.
San Fermín: 6–14 July
Pamplona's San Fermín festival takes place every year from 6 to 14 July. It is best known for the running of the bulls, but the programme also includes processions, music, fireworks and celebrations across the city. The festival attracts large crowds, so book your stay well ahead if you plan to visit.
La Tomatina: Late August
Buñol, near Valencia, hosts La Tomatina on the last Wednesday of August. The event is a large, organised tomato fight that draws visitors from around the world.
The La Tomatina dates follow an annual pattern rather than a fixed calendar date. In 2026, the festival took place on 26 August. The 2027 edition is expected on 25 August based on the last-Wednesday tradition, but check the official event announcement before booking. You need a ticket to enter the designated fight area, and accommodation around Valencia gets busier during the event.

Planning from India
A Spain holiday from India needs a little preparation, particularly if you're travelling during Easter, summer or a major festival.
Spain Schengen Visa for Indian Travellers
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for a short tourist visit to Spain. Apply through the Spanish consular process if Spain is your main destination or the country where you will spend the most nights on a multi-country trip.
You can generally apply up to six months before your planned trip. Avoid leaving the application until the last few weeks: processing can take longer during busy travel periods, and you may need time to provide additional documents.
Keep your hotel bookings, flight itinerary, travel insurance, financial documents and trip plan consistent. A visa application does not guarantee approval, so avoid making non-refundable bookings before understanding the cancellation terms.
When Should You Book Flights from India?
For April–June and September–October travel, start comparing flights around three to six months before departure. If you're travelling during Semana Santa, San Fermín or La Tomatina, begin earlier because accommodation in the host city can fill quickly.
July and August are popular European holiday months. If your dates are fixed, booking flights and hotels early gives you more choice. For a flexible winter city break, you can usually compare a wider range of dates.
Understand Spanish Meals
Spain follows a later daily schedule than many Indian travellers are used to. Lunch is commonly served between 1 pm and 4 pm, while dinner usually starts around 8 pm and can continue until 11 pm or later in larger cities.
