From wandering through Parisian streets to crossing borders between countries, there's no single Europe visa. What you need depends entirely on where you're going. If your trip covers France, Italy, Switzerland or any of the other 29 Schengen countries, you're looking at a Schengen visa. Heading to the UK or Ireland instead? Those run on their own systems, separate from Schengen and from each other.
The first step is to map your entire itinerary before applying for a Europe visa for Indians. The Schengen Area currently covers 29 countries while the UK, Ireland and Cyprus follow separate entry systems.

Types of Europe Visa
The type of Europe Visa you need depends primarily on your destination and purpose of travel.

The 29 Schengen countries operate under common short-stay visa rules. Ireland is outside the Schengen Area, while Cyprus is not currently part of the Schengen Area and has its own national visa system.
A valid Schengen visa can be recognised for travel to Cyprus under specific conditions, including the applicable requirements on visa type, validity and entries. A Cyprus-issued visa does not give general access to the Schengen Area.
EES and ETIAS 2026
The European Entry and Exit System (EES) is the most important recent border change for Indian travellers visiting the Schengen Area. EES became fully operational on 10 April 2026 and records the entry and exit of covered non-EU short-stay travellers, along with relevant biometric information, at the external Schengen border.
You do not apply for EES before travelling. Registration takes place at the external border when you enter or leave the Schengen Area.
EES vs ETIAS
These two systems serve different purposes:

ETIAS is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact launch date still to be announced, so checking before your travel dates is advised. Indian travellers who require a Schengen visa do not need to apply for ETIAS for that visa-required trip.
Schengen Visa
A Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa for travel within the Schengen Area. It generally allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the validity, number of entries and duration stated on the visa.
A Schengen tourist visa is generally used for holidays, sightseeing, visiting family or friends and other permitted short-term activities. It does not give you permission to take up employment.
Schengen Visa for Indians
The Schengen visa for Indians is the route most Indian tourists use when visiting one or more Schengen countries.
You should not choose the consulate simply because it has an earlier appointment. Your application must go to the country responsible for your itinerary under the Schengen rules.
If you are visiting:
One Schengen country: Apply through that country's competent authority.
Several countries: Apply through the country that is your main destination.
Several countries with equal stays: Apply through the country whose external border you intend to enter first.

For a summer Europe trip, especially during June to August, do not treat the rule of “apply at least 15 days before travel” as a planning target. Appointment availability comes before visa processing, and VFS states that appointment availability and Europe visa processing time are controlled by the relevant embassy or consulate.

For the UK, you can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa up to three months before travel. For Schengen, applications can generally be lodged up to six months before the intended trip.
What About Appointment Availability in India?
There is no single Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru waiting time that applies to every Schengen country. Each consulate and visa centre controls its own appointment process, and availability can change with season, demand and local capacity.
For example, VFS currently operates Schengen application centres across cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi for different participating countries, while individual consulates may impose their own jurisdiction and booking rules.
The practical takeaway is simple: check the appointment calendar before finalising non-refundable travel arrangements.
Europe Visa Fees (2026)
The Europe visa fees depend on the country and visa category. The government fee is only part of the amount you may spend because external visa-centre service charges, courier charges and document costs can apply. Here is the cost for the Schengen visa structure updated as of September 2026.

The cost of Europe visa is therefore different depending on your itinerary. If you are travelling to both the Schengen Area and the UK, you may need to pay separate government visa fees.
The Europe visa price can also increase when you add optional services such as courier delivery, premium appointment services or document-related expenses. VFS notes that service fees are separate from the embassy or consulate's visa decision and processing.
UK Visa for Indians
The UK is outside the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa does not replace a UK visa. The UK visa for Indians most relevant to tourism is the Standard Visitor Visa.
UK Visa Application
The UK visa application is completed online before attending the required visa application centre appointment.
The main steps are:
- Check whether you need a UK visa for your nationality, travel purpose and intended length of stay
- Complete the online form with accurate details that match your passport and supporting documents
- Pay the applicable visa fee and save the payment confirmation
- Book your appointment at an authorised visa application centre in India
- Prove your identity using your passport and the documents requested during the application process
- Give your fingerprints and have your photograph taken during the biometric process
- You’ll also need to submit documents such as your itinerary, accommodation details, financial records and proof of your circumstances in India
- Wait for the decision and track your application using the reference details provided
The UK says the earliest you can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa is three months before your trip.

Ireland Visa for Indians
Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and operates its own visa system. Indian travellers who require an Irish visa generally need to obtain it before travelling.
For tourism, the relevant route is usually the Short Stay ‘C’ Visit Tourist Visa.
Ireland Tourist Visa
The application is started online through Ireland's visa system and normally includes:

- Evidence of ties to India
- Previous immigration or travel information where relevant
Irish immigration currently lists €60 for a single-entry visa and €100 for a multiple-entry visa, although exemptions and additional submission charges can apply.
Can an Irish Visa Be Used for the UK?
Generally, an Irish visit visa does not automatically give an Indian traveller permission to enter the UK.
However eligible Indian nationals living in India may benefit from the British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) when they hold a qualifying visa endorsed under the scheme. This is subject to specific conditions, so check the endorsement rather than assuming every Irish visa qualifies.
Cyprus Visa for Indians
Cyprus is not currently part of the Schengen Area and has its own visa rules.
A short-stay Cyprus visa currently costs €90 for most applicants, with €45 for children aged six to under 12 and no fee for children under six.
Cyprus also recognises certain valid Schengen visas under specified conditions, so travellers who already hold a Schengen visa should check whether it can be used for their Cyprus itinerary rather than automatically applying for another visa.
Common Reasons for Schengen Visa Refusal
A refusal does not necessarily mean that an applicant is ineligible to travel. It means the consulate was not satisfied that the visa conditions had been demonstrated.
For Indian applicants, pay particular attention to:
1. Insufficient or Unclear Funds
Your bank statements should support the trip you are proposing. A large unexplained deposit shortly before applying can raise questions rather than solve them.
2. Inconsistent Itinerary
Your flights, hotel bookings, leave letter, application form and stated travel plans should align. If your application says you are spending five days in France but your documents show most of the trip elsewhere, explain the discrepancy.
3. Weak Evidence of Your Circumstances in India
Employment, business, family or other legitimate commitments can help demonstrate your circumstances and intention to return. Provide genuine evidence rather than trying to manufacture ties.
4. Unreliable or Inauthentic Documents
Do not submit fabricated bank statements, employment documents or accommodation records. Authorities can refuse applications where there are doubts about the authenticity or reliability of supporting documents.
5. Buying “Dummy” Documents
Do not create a false travel history simply to strengthen an application. If a booking is required as supporting evidence, use a genuine, cancellable or otherwise appropriate reservation where possible and follow the destination's document requirements.
Can One Europe Visa Cover Multiple Countries?
A single Schengen visa can generally cover multiple Schengen countries during the permitted period, provided your itinerary meets the application rules.
