Homestays in Cherrapunji (or locally called ‘Sohra’) range from simple family-run rooms in town to canyon-edge properties where misty valley views come standard. Sohra sits in the East Khasi Hills, and most stays here share a similar shape regardless of price: home-cooked Khasi meals, a host family rather than reception staff, and rooms built to face the hills rather than a parking lot.
Choosing a homestay over a hotel here usually comes down to wanting something closer to how Sohra actually lives — home-cooked food instead of a restaurant menu, a host who'll point you toward a quieter waterfall trail, and rates that stay reasonable even when the view doesn't. Most properties include Wi-Fi, hot water, and breakfast as standard, with bonfires and full home-cooked meals available on request at many of them.
This guide breaks down best homestays in Cherrapunji by area, price, and the honest trade-offs between a homestay and a hotel, so you book something that fits the trip rather than just the first listing that comes up — useful whether you're planning independently or picking where aMeghalaya tour packages itinerary should actually spend its Sohra nights.
Homestays in Cherrapunji at a Glance
Budget band: Roughly ₹600–1,200 per night — simple rooms, shared or basic private bathrooms, often family-run
Mid-range band: Roughly ₹1,200–2,500 per night — more comfortable rooms, sometimes with hot water and better views
View-front band: Roughly ₹2,500–4,000 per night — canyon-facing balconies or rooms, the closest a homestay gets to resort-style comfort
Meals: Breakfast is commonly included; lunch and dinner are often available on request for an extra charge, usually home-cooked Khasi food
Booking reality: Larger properties near Sohra town take online bookings, but many smaller homestays are still booked by a phone call or WhatsApp message rather than through an app
Confused between a homestay vs hotel in Cherrapunji? A homestay here isn't just a cheaper bed — it changes the texture of the trip itself, especially in a place as defined by its weather and culture as Sohra is.
1. Authentic local experience
Staying with a Khasi host family means home-cooked meals, conversation about the area's rain, waterfalls, and caves, and small recommendations — a quieter viewpoint, a trail locals actually use — that rarely make it into a standard hotel stay
2. Budget-friendly
Most homestays cost noticeably less than a comparable hotel room, and many already include breakfast or full meals in that price, making them the more budget homestay, Cherrapunji without sacrificing comfort.
3. Personalised hospitality
Hosts tend to treat guests more like visiting family than paying customers, which shows up in small ways — tea on arrival, help planning the next day's waterfall route, genuine concern if the weather turns
4. Closer to nature and the mist
Many of Sohra's homestays are built specifically to face the canyon or surrounding hills, so waking up to drifting cloud cover over the valley is part of the stay itself, not something you have to drive out to see
5. Eco-friendly by nature
Smaller, family-run properties generally have a lighter footprint than large resorts, and staying in one keeps tourism income directly within the local community rather than a hotel chain
6. Good for families and couples alike
The homely, lower-key setting suits both — families get a safe, flexible environment with home-cooked food kids will actually eat, while couples get quieter, more intimate stays than a larger hotel offers
7. Increasingly work-friendly
A growing number of homestays now offer reliable Wi-Fi, letting remote workers extend a trip here without losing connectivity entirely.
Why a Homestay Beats a Hotel in Sohra?
A homestay in Sohra isn't just a cheaper bed, it changes the texture of the trip itself, though a hotel still makes sense for certain travellers. Here's an honest look at what each one actually gives you.
A homestay generally gives you:
Home-cooked Khasi meals and real conversation with a host family, not a reception desk
Lower cost than a comparable hotel room, often with breakfast or meals already included
Rooms built to face the canyon or hills, so the mist and views are part of the stay itself, not something you drive out to see
A smaller footprint, with your money going directly to a local family rather than a chain
A hotel generally gives you:
More predictable amenities: reliable hot water, in-house dining, backup power during outages
Easier online booking and clearer cancellation policies
A better fit for larger groups or anyone prioritising consistency over character

Choose Your Homestay In Cherrapunji by View & Area
Where you stay in Sohra matters almost as much as what you stay in, since each area trades off differently between convenience and views.
1. Sohra Town
The most practical base, with the easiest access to the market, petrol, and most of Sohra's sights within a short drive.
Best for: first-time visitors who want everything within easy reach
Trade-off: fewer dramatic views directly from your room compared to the canyon-rim properties
A reasonable mix of budget and mid-range Sohra homestay options cluster here, including NG Eco Homestay near Saitsohpen, which pairs valley-view rooms with easy access to Nohkalikai Falls and the Mawsmai Caves
2. The Canyon-Rim View Belt
A string of homestays and small resorts along the roads leading toward Mawsmai and the canyon edge, where the view is the entire point of booking here.
Best for: travellers who want to wake up to the canyon and don't mind a short drive back into town for errands
Trade-off: quieter at night, with less within walking distance
This is where most homestays in Cherrapunji with view are concentrated, including Cascade Homestay in Laitduh, where rooms look out over waterfall country, and a few properties with direct Bangladesh-plains views on a clear day
3. Tyrna Side
A smaller cluster of homestays and lodges based around Tyrna village, the trailhead for the Double Decker Root Bridge trek or find Nongriat homestays.
Best for: travellers prioritising an early start on the Nongriat trek over sightseeing elsewhere in Sohra
Trade-off: further from Sohra town's other attractions, including Nohkalikai Falls and the market
4. Laitkynsew
A quieter village further out from Sohra town, known for a handful of well-established resort-style stays with sweeping canyon views.
Best for: travellers who want the view-belt experience but in a calmer, more standalone setting
Trade-off: the furthest of these options from Sohra's town centre, so factor in extra drive time to sights like theNohkalikai Falls viewpoint
Booking Norms & Etiquette for Homestays in Cherrapunji
A few practical things to know before you book or arrive in Cherrapunji.
1. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for October–December dates; smaller homestays fill up faster than their limited online presence suggests
2. Carry cash as a backup, even if a property accepts UPI — connectivity near canyon-rim properties can be inconsistent
3. Ask about meal timings on arrival, since home-cooked meals often run on the host family's schedule rather than a fixed restaurant hour
4. Treat it as a family home, not a hotel — keeping noise down in the evening and asking before using shared spaces goes a long way in smaller homestays
5. Monsoon (June–September) brings mist that can block canyon views for days at a time and keeps things damp throughout, though it also means fuller waterfalls and lower rates; for what else changes across the state in those months, Meghalaya trips in monsoon covers it
6. Pair a canyon-rim stay with a separate day trip to Nongriat rather than trying to cover both from one base, since the two sit on different sides of Sohra
How to Plan Your Sohra Base as a Traveller?
Most travellers use Sohra as a 2–3 night base, splitting time between the canyon-rim sights, Nohkalikai Falls, and either a day trip or overnight stay down in Nongriat.
A Cherrapunji homestay price in the ₹1,200–2,500 range covers most reasonable mid-range options without needing to book a full resort
Pairing a canyon-rim stay with a separate day trip to Nongriat usually works better than trying to do both from the same base
If you're mapping out the wider Meghalaya circuit around Sohra, Shillong, and Dawki, building in enough nights to actually use each base properly matters more than cramming in extra distance each day
If you're planning a trip to Meghalaya, staying at a homestay is honestly one of the best ways to experience it. You get that warm, local vibe, homemade food, and views that feel straight out of a postcard. Whether you’re traveling with family or looking for peaceful homestays in Meghalaya for couples, there’s something for everyone. It’s cozy, affordable, and way more personal than a regular hotel. So go ahead—book that stay and soak in the real charm of Meghalaya!

Thanks to the WanderOn team for crafting a beautiful itinerary to Meghalaya. Our group was led by Saheb Raja, who shared amazing local stories which kept each one of us hooked wanting for more The best part indeed has to be the safari where we got to spot 7 rhinos in the western range of Kaziranga, visit to few of the best waterfalls, the trek to living root bridges (it was quite challenging, but the team spirit and fun along the way made it relatively easier) and needless to say the living root bridge in itself.
P.s: At the time of booking, I was misinformed about the stays and the number of people traveling from my city. Hence the 4.5 stars. However, WanderOn staying true to its claim, managed to provide best accommodations with food for the price range and amazing stopovers to explore local cuisine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your right to Know!
01
How much does a Cherrapunji homestay cost?
Prices vary quite a bit depending on what you're after. Budget rooms run about ₹600–1,200 a night, mid-range stays with decent views sit in the ₹1,200–2,500 range, and the canyon-facing properties can climb to ₹5,500 or more during peak season. Breakfast is usually thrown in, while lunch and dinner cost extra if you ask for them.
02
Which area of Cherrapunji is best to stay?
Sohra Town suits first-time visitors who want everything nearby. The Canyon-Rim Belt suits travellers prioritising views. Tyrna suits an early Nongriat trek start. Laitkynsew suits those wanting a quieter, standalone stay. Each area trades convenience for a different kind of access.
03
Are meals included in homestays in Cherrapunji?
Most homestays in Cherrapunji include breakfast in the room rate. Lunch and dinner aren't usually automatic, you'll need to ask, and the host family cooks and charges for these separately. Since meals follow the household's own routine rather than a restaurant clock, it's worth checking timings the moment you check in.
04
Should I choose a homestay or hotel in Sohra?
It depends on what you're after. A homestay gets you home-cooked food, a lower bill, and an actual conversation with the family hosting you. A hotel gives you fewer surprises, think backup power, hot water on tap, and a booking you can cancel without a phone call. If you're travelling in a large group or just want things to run predictably, a hotel is usually the easier call.
05
Can I stay in Nongriat village?
Yes. Nongriat has its own small cluster of homestays near the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, ideal if trekking is your priority. Most travellers instead base themselves in Sohra or Tyrna and treat Nongriat as a day trip or single overnight stop.
06
How early should I book for peak season?
Book your homestay at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead for October to December, Sohra's busiest months. Smaller, family-run homestays fill up faster than their limited online listings suggest, and many are confirmed by phone or WhatsApp rather than instant booking, so start early.
